Yay! Serious character development!
Nina was so great in this episode, but Amy really shined. It was nice, since it seemed that Edna's speech last week had an effect on her. She finally acknowledged that maybe her relationship with Colin isn't that healthy.
The homoeroticism in this episode wasn't too healthy, either. For a moment there, I almost wondered if Bright really was asking Ephram to that dance thingie. That really would have shaken me up a bit.
I'm not suprised that they are replacing this with a showing of "Bull Durham" this Sunday. It's not family-friendly viewing, which Sunday is usually always reserved for.
I thought it was handled very well. I had faith that in the writers and producers that this wouldn't end up as some crappy preach-a-thon, and it did an excellent job showing both sides of the abortion argument. It's such a difficult issue to bring up, and I was pleased with the way they presented it.
I don't know that I was totally invested in the storyline, though: we just met Kate last week, so we don't know anything about the character. It seems a little abrupt.
The reading at the end of the episode actually extended some more, according to my closed captioning, but it was replaced with footsteps instead. Huh.
It was very poignant the way they chose not to give this episode a title (I belive it was called "Episode 20", even those there are 21 episodes in existances, including the pilot) and the narration by Irv was missing tonight.

They won't be showing it on Sunday because they had a bunch of the regular sponsors drop their ads from the show for good and they were left scrambling to find any advertisers to fill their slots this week.

I struggled with this in medical school because I went to a Catholic medical school even though I'm not religious. They would not perform abortions nor would they send us to any hospitals to allow us to observe abortions. One faculty member was fired for publicly voicing his/her support of women's right to choose. I never had a solid stance on the issue because I feel the issue is to complex for me to take a stance on. Anyhow, I think the show handled it well and it's a shame that advertisers would drop them simply because of the way the plot turned out. I don't think it was being advocated.

Pretty good show last night....next week looks even better. I was glad to see Amy take a stand against Colin for a change. Colin has serious mental and physical problems as indicated by the end of the show with his seizure. I noticed WB states the show has received critical acclaim from various sources......where does the show rank? I am guessing it will be back next year.

I also thought the episode did a good job conveying the gamut of the internal and external struggles this decision and procedure entail with much sensitivity given to the subject. The Dr. Brown and Dr. Abbott dynamic is one of the better portrayals that even doctors don't always agree on the best course of action, and some of that is attributable to each doctor's life experiences and where they "are" at the present time.

Because of my strong feelings about abortion, I was a little peeved at how the abortion plot turned out. And Treat apologizing to his neighbor about being upset that she gave his nine-year-old (right?) daughter a Penthouse is pretty silly. But I was pleased at the Ephram-Amy-Colin development, and that Amy doesn't totally have her Colin-blinders on still... I'm surprised (and pleased) that she took them off this soon.

The episode is running during the May sweeps, when ratings are used to set local advertising rates. But Levin said the timing was coincidental, and it was even proving problematic for his ad sales team.
He would not reveal which advertisers, or even how many, had dropped off the show. The WB is seeking replacement advertisers to fill its open commercial slots.
and another
Some of the show's regular advertisers reportedly have balked, leaving the WB to scramble to fill its "Everwood" commercial slots, a reminder of why the subject matter has been largely avoided in such conspicuous fashion on commercial television since Bea Arthur's Maude Findlay, then 47, elected to terminate her pregnancy on "Maude" in 1972, three months before Roe vs. Wade.
There are others as well, just don't have the time to do a more detailed search before I leave work in 10 minutes.

Everwood - 5/12
Although the episode has aired in most time zones already:
It was such an excellent episode. Nina really shined, and I loved her performances. You could feel her pain and betrayal, and I would have been surprised that Carl was the gay character, I already spoiled it for myself by reading some reviews over at another website.
I'm really anticipating the season finale, though. I'm kind of hoping that Colin will die or move away or whatever. He's really unplesant, and that last scene really didn't make me like him any better.
Fear Itself: Defiant Ephram takes a boat out alone and has a serious accident; Colin and his parents must decide whether to allow Dr. Brown to perform a second surgery; Nina accidentally discovers her husband is having an affair.

And here I was thinking Delia would be the gay character!
I actually thought the episode was too predictable. As soon as I saw Nina's husband was back on the show, and especially after the condom was found, I knew that they were going to make him the gay character. At first, when I heard they were going to do this a few weeks ago, I thought of Amy's brother, but as soon as I saw Nina's husband was back and everything seemed to be going well and happy for them, I knew that wasn't going to last. That plot twist was too easy to see.
As will be the plot twist for next week.
But the writers are doing a good job on the series, I am not criticizing it this late in the season, as they have to do what they have to do, but maybe I would have been more accepting for the way they wrote Nina's husband to be gay if I hadn't knew that it was going to happen.

Ah, poor Nina, she deserves so much better. But this does springboard into romantic possibilities for Nina and Andy for next season. Never did like Nina's absentee hubby.
The Andy/Ephraim subplot doesn't really cover new ground, it's sort of getting old, actually.
Now, the Amy/her dad subplot was actually pretty good.
The Colin subplot is getting tedious. Just go, already!

When Nina found out her husband was cheating, I was like DUH! No "husband" who never comes home like that is faithful. I always figured he probably had another family stashed away somewhere.
I know of marriages that require one of the spouses to work in another city and the spouse comes home at every possible moment. This husband barely came home for holidays, much less regular visits. I was surprised that Nina was so naive about it.
As far as the rest of the plot, this episode should have been called "Andy knows best". First, Colin's parents have to eat crow when they realize that Dr. Brown was right about Colin (I wonder if they blame themselves now for not listening to him when he was trying to treat Colin and they fired him.) And then Andy tells Ephram to not go on the boat and he is almost killed when he doesn't listen.
I guess Andy is a good guy since he didn't say "I told you so." once.

Well, color me shocked about Nina's husband having an affair with a guy. That caught me way offguard.
Was Bright even in this episode? We need more of poor, dumb Bright. I'll be interested to see what happens to his role in the show

Dammit, I missed this finale, too. I have been really bad about this over the last week.

Argh...cliffhanger.
Although I didn't like Colin previously, he was more likeable in this episode. I'm hoping he doesn die because of the repercussions for Andy.
(This is speculation stuff...)
Spoiler:
It was a good episode, IMO. I'm relieved that Andy finally told Ephram why they moved...it would have been so fustrating to have to wait until the series finale for him to know. And it was nice that acknowledge Nina again, since Colin's storyline was obviously the main focus.

Colin agrees to have the surgery, and Andy, Ephram, and Delia go to a Denver University to see Andy's mentor. Colin then decides to "kidnap" Bright and Amy, for a sort of "last day".
Colin and company take a road trip. They sing REM songs and have breakfast at that pancake place, and then visit a baseball field/stadium, where the senior's grad nite is taking place. Amy gets upsets because she figures that Colin is trying to "tie up" everything before the surgery. Amy and Colin make up and Colin stops being an ass.
While at the university, Andy drags the kids to a parking lot, and reveals that is where Andy and Julia had their first date. The story involved Andy's lame car, and Julia teaching him how to drive a stick-shift Volvo. Andy then offers to teach Ephram to drive, and it goes kinda badly.
They have a discussion and Ephram learned why Andy moved the family over to Everwood.
Andy's mentor at first is angry at Andy for leaving his practice, but agrees to advise him once Andy tells him about Colin's case. They figure out how to do the surgery, but it's "hard", and the mentor dude tells him not to do it.
Colin prepares for the surgery by talking to his dad, having his mom help him shave his head, and making Andy promise to take him off life support if the surgery isn't successful.
Then the surgery begins. Amy and Ephram meet at the hospital vending machine, and Ephram decides not to go to New York, and mentions that Everwood is home to him now.
In the operating room, a blood vessel bursts and Andy is trying to fix it. Then, Andy walks out into the waiting room, and everybody gets up and looks at him.
Fade to credits...see you in late September/early October.

Brilliant effing episode from the opening to the end.
Some things were just meant to be tough - best line of the night.
