This show is becoming really boring to me. I think a lot of it is because I truly dislike Hannah and Jake. I know a lot of you around these parts like Hannah, but I think she is ridiculous. Here's to hoping she stays gone.

I have to question whether or not there are still any stories left in Everwood.

Next new ep is Dec 8th.
That shoplifting scene was brilliant.
... and Simon Rex's acting was subpar yet again... but he has moved up a notch, going from UPN to the WB is a big step.

I had to laugh at that guy's name was Cliff, and he fell off of one.
I really don't like Jake either and it looks now they are setting him up with a big drug addiction storyline. Yawn.
When Hannah called Bright at the end to tell him she was staying in Everwood, I thought it woud have funny if he already was with a new girl (one who puts out.) They did "break up". Hee.

Not that it's surprising, but I was happy to see Hannah stick around. On the other hand, Dr. Jake is still wasting screen-time w/ his shittyness.

I just remembered the part where Dr Abbott is 'practicing' skydiving by looking into the fan while leaning over the chair.

So I'm done watching the third disc, 12 episodes into the season. This show is just utterly awesome so far. The way it delves into families and relationships.... it is so human. The third disc with the Thanksgiving episode, the visit by the grandparents, Colin waking up- these were the best episodes so far. And then watching the dynamics change between Ephram and Amy as Colin wakes up, everything seemed so real. Perhaps it is because similar situations have happened in my life, but it really did get to me watching Ephram try to convince Amy to not give up Colin, while telling her that if he was any smarter, he wouldn't be telling her to go back to her boyfriend.
The stories are so rich, and so well written it never fails to capture the myriad of subtle, and sometimes not so subtle, emotions and tensions in these characters' lives. It's really sad that WB hasn't released the other seasons so far. I really hope more people pick up the Season1 box. Until the reruns start next September or new DVD releases come out, I know I'll be rewatching this season again and again and again. OK, back to Everwood for me.

The only thing that consistently makes me roll my eyes when I watch Everwood is the clunky narration by Irv. Every now and then it's not such a distraction, but most of the time it is just not needed. It's like the showrunners think we can't figure out the emotion of the scene ourselves, we have to have the point slammed over our heads with a sledgehammer. I was very happy when they started veering away from the narration.

"... we have to have the point slammed over our heads with a sledgehammer."
I do not think that is the intention. They are attempting to tie the episode, yes we can see the ties (often a mile a way), but the narration is only there to present the show as a total picture. Many would argue that the show loses something without the narration.
The first season of Everwood is the best television I have ever watched. period. Not hyperbole. It is the first drama that the father son relationship is central. At the same time it balances every character. There are no bad people. Just good people who occaisonaly do bad things. Most the time they regret it and usually learn from it.
Yes, it can be preachy, self-righteous and heavy handed. But it often twists those scenes into something human and real. Sometimes using humor, but most often with single thoughtful conversation between players. It is those powerfuls scenes that lifts it out of the mediocrity that mires other family dramas and makes it something more than just a 43 minute distraction.

I agree, somewhat, with what you say, Ayre. I understand the writers' intentions in regards to the narration, but I just don't think it is handled very well. I still like the show as a whole, though. And like you say, the conversations and scenes are what sell the emotions and situations; that's precisely why I don't think the narration is necessary and can be a distraction.
And when you say "Many would argue that the show loses something without the narration," are you referring to yourself or throngs of people that have told you that they love Everwood's narration and think that the show suffers when it doesn't use it?

I am referring to forum (here, WB and everwood fan sites) threads at the start of last season, when the opening narations were removed. It was clear the the fans on the sites I visited preferred the naration. I was careful and used the word "many", to note that it represented a significant but unquantifiable amount. Not a majority viewers (In my best Napolean Dynamite voice) "As if anyone could even know that". It was chosen specifically to avoid your last response ;-P I never used nor implied the word throng.

Anytime I see someone use many and not say where the many came from (whether it be friends, message boards, etc.) it always makes me raise my eyebrow. Because I know some people who toss out words like that to try to back up their own opinions, not represent the opinions of others.
But that's the problem with using a word like that: other people don't know whether you are talking about a handful of friends that you watch the show with, your family, people on message boards. I used the word throngs precisely because many is so vague and can be used as a cop-out. All you had to say was where the many came from so we (or I guess I) knew they didn't come from out your ass. But anyway, I find it a little odd because I can remember some hate for the narration on here. Oh well.

Question:
Anyone know if there are any spoilers in the extras material (commentary, etc) in the first season DVD set? I'm done with watching the entire season, but since there's a cliffhanger at the end, and it'll be around a year's wait until I can catch season 2 on TV, I'm trying to avoid knowing what happened to Colin Hart. In the meantime, I'm hoping to rewatch the season, listen to the commentaries and extras, but not if there are spoilers.
Great, great show by the way. I enjoyed it so much that I forced myself to watch only 1 episode a night to avoid finishing the entire season too quickly. My favorite is still the thanksgiving episode, but the season finale is pretty darn good. One of my favorite scenes is when Harold Abbott agrees to do the abortion (the student and the piano teacher's baby), and at the end of that episode, you see Abbott walk into the church to confess. Thought that episode showed a rare side of his character. OVerall, I think the beginning and end voiceovers fit pretty well.

I thought we weren't getting a new one until next year.
I'm not complaining though.

So this will proably be the last one until March or so? I know Beauty & the Geek will be taking over the time slot for eight weeks starting in January (similar to what they did with Summerland last year).

Jake's past catches up with him, and Nina drop kicks him to the curb and turns to Andy.
Andy finds out he's raising a little hellion a la "Mean Girls".
Bright finally gets Hannah to see how he sees her.
Rose turns Harold's world upsidedown with wanting to adopt a child.
I found the Ephram-Amy postcard scene really touching and heartfelt. At least Ephram laid out there on the line.

If that was the last episode for the next 8 weeks, they certainly didn't do what they have the past couple seasons, which is have the mid season cliff hanger. I guess it was that in a certain way, but not as dramatic as previous years.
And Andy is raising a hellion...uh....yeah. What did he expect? She cusses at the dinner table, she's angry as spit towards him and was quite mad at Ephram, her mom died, she's trying to fit in in a new environment.... and she's a growing kid! Kids do mean things to other kids. That's life. Now when she winds up pregnant at 13, then he has a real problem!
I am not really looking forward to the Abbots adopting a child, unless it's Annyong.
And knowing WB's knack for keeping happy couples apart, I thought for a minute that those post cards Ephram had were from his illicit lover from Europe!

The whole Bright Hannah thing felt a little bit TOO overdramatic and just a little bit too synthetic. The Ephram-Amy postcard scene, OTOH, was very well done.
I still say that Hannah's mom is going to come back into the picture at some point later this season to become Andy's new love interest, JUST as the Nina Jake thing resolves and Nina redirects her interest towards Andy.

Good episode.
Ephram/Amy scenes were classic. As whiney as some people think Ephram is, the show needs to revolve around Andy and him. Harold, Amy, Nina and Bright are all strong sattelite characters and just do not seem to work well without Andy or Ephram in the scene. Rose/Harrold, Bright/Hanna and Nina/Jake are the weakest points in the show.
The focus could be shifted towards Delia. But I have said this before and I will say it again ...
Delia is the Devil. Just wait and see.
The show maybe called Everwood, but it is really about the Browns. They need to take a page from Gilmore Girls and keep central characters .... errrr central.

The postcard scene was good w/ Amy and Ephram. And Bright and Hannah were entertaining as always (although they weren't quite at the level that they usually are). The rest of the show's storylines are boring the hell out of me.
