Everwood on The WB
#951
So I just started watching Everwood (first season thoughts)
Have heard good things about it, and decided to buy the first season DVD really cheaply at Costco.
I'm up to the fifth episode and so far, I really love it. I probably won't come up with the perfect words to describe it, but it really gives me a warm feeling watching the people in this show. It's like being around some great friends. I like Harold Abbott's peculiarities. Delia is very cute (kid-cute, sickos), particularly in that scene in the car where she was laughing along with her father and Ephram while passing to her father the note from her teacher saying she's in trouble. And in the very first episode, the first big argument (of many, I assume) between Ephram and his dad in front of the house:
Ephram to Andrew: "Mom would have never had done this to us! She never would've moved us here and gone crazy!"
Andrew to Ephram: "Don't be so sure of that!"
Ephram to Andrew: "I am sure! All right, I knew her. You didn't know her. We all just tolerated you!"
Andrew to Ephram: "Hey, that's pretty good, what else you got?!
Ephram to Andrew: "I wish you died instead of her!"
Andrew to Ephram: "Well, I wish I did too you little brat!"
Ephram to Andrew: "I hate you!"
Andrew to Ephram: "Well, I hate you right back! Now get in that house!"
Thought that scene was quite emotionally intense. Damn almost made me cry watching them do that. And Amy.... well, she's good to look at, for starters but she shouldn't really play with Ephram's feelings like that.
Overall, I've enjoyed all the first several episodes so far. I just finished watching the one about the wandering deer and how Ephram and Andrew try to walk her back to the reserve.
It's really too bad that WB hasn't released seasons 2 and 3 on DVD. Makes me quite mad honestly, because I know that after watching season 1, I'll either have to jump to 4, or just sit and wait until ABC Family starts showing this in Fall 2006 (one fricking year away). What would you guys do (should I just go to season 4 after this?). I really love this show, and easily the best $17 I've spent on any DVD purchase.

Well, I don't know what to tell you about jumping to season 4. My instincts say no. I didn't watch any of season 3, but have started watching the show again this season, and I am confused about several things and feel lost with some storylines.... so I am sure skipping from the end of season 1 to the current season 4 eps will be really disorienting.

Everwood is one of my favorite shows. You should watch it in order. You will be really confused if you skip straight to the fourth season. Season one is very, very strong with excellent writing. There are still more great episodes to come on your set. I also wish they would release s2, 3 on dvd, but the word is s1 didn't sell well.

Liked the beginning w/ Hannah and Bright talking to Amy. And the therapy session. That's about it. Very subpar ep for Everwood.

After watching the last episode on the last disc, you'll be begging for a season 2 dvd. I dont know whats taking so long. This was originally released in the middle of season 2, and I thought it was too early to be on dvd back then. But the show kept getting better, and picking it up for 20 bucks was too good to resist.
They're scheduled to be in reruns on Family Channel next September, so I hope new dvds will be out before then.

It's sort of interesting to see bits of passive-aggressive Ephram come out (due to Reed-inspired jealousy), but then he is more open with re-connecting with Andy, and becoming less selfish and more self-less.
I teared up a bit when Hannah's mom was conveying heartwrenching emotions from giving Hannah the choice to go to Colorado or stay to take care of her father with her mother, and Hannah was just so torn because it was a no-win situation for Hannah. Bright was comforting and presented a good case for some good that came from Hannah's choice to not be an additional burden for her mom during her father's illness.
Thankfully Amy didn't have to wear her white t-shirt uniform in this episode.
Good stuff.

Nice continuity for them to mention seeing Linda in Africa.
Yay, for casting Jayne Brook as Hannah's mom. I have always liked that actress and I have not seen her since John Doe was cancelled.
I'd like to see the actress who plays Hannah someday play Amy Acker's little sister in something.

Dr. Jake sure can run fast!
Good ep this week. Reid is a stand-up guy... I still wanna punch him though.
"Premium coffee?... Is that why you can't afford a shirt?"

I'm late to the discussion, but does anyone else foresee Hannah's mom somehow connecting with Andy Brown? They haven't met yet, but I have a feeling they will.
And yeah, Jadzia, I like Jayne Brook a lot too, from her days on Chicago Hope. Glad to see her back on TV and I hope they find a longer term role for her on Everwood.

Jake and Clifton have the worse buddy-buddy vacation ever.
Hannah making Harold take note of his predictability, Harold starts living on the wild side, starting with the worse display of shoplifting every displayed on TV.
So HannahBear is getting to stick around Everwood wasn't that big a surprise. Bright did come through with that smooth play with giving Hannah an Everwood prom date.
Ephram is now Amy's wingman, how pathetic is that?
