That's exactly my point - their music doesn't lend itself to any sort of guitar virtuosity, like say, blues or metal does - I don't even recall Decemberists doing any sort of solos - it's singer-songwriter music that someone with minimal knowledge in guitar can pick up and play - that's why I was surprised he could "shred" at all. But the way he played and the way he hid his shortcomings behind that awful gain, shows that he's not exactly an great guitar player when it comes to that sort of style, certainly not anywhere near Frampton, so he has to hack it.

I guess it worked out for the Decemberists though since the have gotten so much publicity out of this. I never heard of them before this.

I think you might be taking the whole "contest" thing a little too seriously. The whole thing was in the tone of the show, and it looked liked everyone had fun.

Come one - Henry Kissinger and Peter Framption uttered in the same sentance? Nice :)

You thought Stephen would have a) won fairly, or b) admitted defeat? You've seen the Colbert Report before, right?

darkside 12-21-06 09:19 PM

Colbert did a great job of staying in character, but still showing respect for Funk. Everyone involved had fun with the bit and you have to admit that was a great close to the show. Thought it was a great episode and a great way to end the year that has pretty much been the year of Stephen Colbert.

Ayre 12-22-06 06:44 AM

It was just a cross promotional gimmick ... The whole thing was a big *yawn*

Someone needed to kick Funk's ass for wearing that hat. ass ... hat .... asshat.

I think I have invented a new word.

Steven Colbert gets his own Ben & Jerry's ice cream flavor, Americone Dream.

"Official confirmation from Ben & Jerry's has not been verified, though company spokesperson Sean Greenwood alluded that should such and ice cream exist, it "COULD be a Patriotic mix of strawberry, blueberry and (American not French) vanilla flavors, striped in the pint with chocolate stars...or perhaps Republican Nut, with each pint lovingly sampled by Dick Cheney to insure product quality"."

Brilliant... I'd eat it every night

Mordred 02-14-07 05:26 PM

 Very cool!

slop101 02-14-07 05:29 PM

It should be loaded with Whoppers to represent his balls.

pinata242 02-14-07 06:10 PM

Tip of the Hat, Ben & Jerry's. Gonna have to tune in tonight to see if this is mentioned for sure.

 The White House Correspondent's dinner will never be the same.

Is the ice cream out yet? I'd love to bring some to a friend's birthday.

dhmac 02-23-07 07:44 AM

Oscar weekend has me thinking. Not to knock Ellen, but Steven Colbert should be hosting the Oscars. (They at least should hire him for next year's.)

Had it tonight, and yes it's delicious. Sweeter than the bill of rights, cooler than the Valley Forge, and with twice as much caramel as the Louisiana Purchase.

Chew 03-06-07 06:52 AM

So just how liberal do you have to be that a chance to shill your ice cream instead becomes a "Defense Department budget" frisbee throw?

EEK! Colbert looked really uncomfortable with Barbarella on his lap. I'm sure he'll be going all out to make his wife feel special this coming Mother's Day. :)

slop101 05-10-07 12:22 AM

Yeah, I wonder how much of Fonda's shenanigans were planed, because he looked pretty surprised and uncomfortable - funny stuff though.

Chew 08-23-07 06:16 AM

Anyone else catch the "trainwreck" last night?

Exactly how much more talk about Virgin Airlines was Branson expecting?

pinata242 08-23-07 08:24 AM

I was highly disappointed. I was expecting more than that in a trainwreck for all the build-up it had. He was just being a pompous ass and isn't used to it being all about him. That's what you get on TCR, out-pompoused.

But, I think that was all part of the joke. Colbert wasn't even going to run the interview, but the press made this huge deal out of it. As parody of how things just get blown out of proportion when they in fact amount to very little, he's been going overboard on the hype for a week.

pinata242 08-23-07 09:13 AM

Maybe so. Do they often record interviews early like that anyway?

slop101 08-23-07 09:51 AM

It's madness!

It's my impression the interview was not recorded early and was meant to air in the episode it was recorded. After what happened, they got another interviewee to fill the spot because they decided to cut the Branson interview entirely. Once the media got ahold of the details and made a big to-do is when Colbert's "trainwreck" hype started. They reversed themselves and decided to air it anyway.

slop101 08-23-07 11:13 AM

I think what "happened" was supposed to happen and wasn't a trainwreck at all.

sjrab16 08-23-07 12:07 PM

It really did not seem that bad to me. I mean the Jane Fonda episode seemed for of an interview that got out of control. It seemed like what they tried to get across to the audience is what happened. Just look at all of the free press this show and Branson got for himself.

Colbert even made a couple of comments about his "Marketing Machine" he has, this was just another piece of that machine.
