Colbert Report--premieres 10/17/05!

http://www.comedycentral.com/shows/t...rt/index.jhtml

The promos are very funny, in Colbert's dry deadpan manner, much better than the ones for that awful David Spade show, unfortunately you have to watch the stupid Honda ad over and over for each clip. Of all the new shows out there, this is easily the one that I have been most looking forward to.

http://www.comedycentral.com/shows/t...nt/index.jhtml

Colbert on Colbert:

"There's nothing in the world that man is afraid of. Except maybe bears..Yeah, he's afraid of bears, but that's just sensible. Let's face it, bears are scary and they want our honey. Also afraid of tigers. (pause) And spiders."

"It's French, Bitch!"

"Where I say whatever's on my mind, and a few things that aren't"

Come on home to Colbert County!

"Because right or wrong, I'm right and you're wrong"

The Colbert Report

I wanted to make a post about recent episodes, but I couldn't find a thread that made sense for general ongoing discussion, so I'm starting this one.

Now, to business:

1-888-OOPS-JEW

"Stephen Colbert's Atonement Hotline"

If you tried calling when it was first shown and got a busy signal or flooded circuit, it's up now. It's good for a chuckle or two.

"and she's single!"

Thanks for the reminder - I had been thinking about calling but forgot as soon as the show ended.

Love this show. Probably some of the most brilliant satire on television. They really balance the comedy and keep the show from becoming too preachy or having a superior smug attitude the way the Daily Show many times comes off.

Colbert has taken on almost a god like status. He can get bridges in Hungary named after him, take down telephone circuits and Wikipedia and even fight Darth Maul all through the power of his audience.

He has the popularity and power that a guy like Howard Stern had in the early to mid 90's.

Did the bridge in Hungary really get named after him?

Sadly, no. One of the qualifications is that the person be dead.

You know, I now like The Colbert Report better than The Daily Show.

It's a lot more wacky, and his character and all his inside jokes (Bears, the list, Tek Jansen, ethnic friend, etc.) just kill me. Not to mention his brutal interviews when he "nails" people.

Some of my friends love Daily Show but can't watch Colbert because they take his character too seriously. They really don't understand the joke. What's wrong with these people?

I started to feel that way for a while; I thought he was a little to good at his "support the president" rhetoric... then I saw his speech at the White House Correspondent's Dinner, and I knew he was still ok.

On the show for a while there, he was just too good at appearing to be a right-wing zealot. I think he has backed off that a bit, and gone back to the good old wackiness I prefer.

I didn't start regularly watching the Daily Show until early this year (another thing to thank my DVR for), and soon checked out Colbert. It took awhile before the idea grew on me, but I now also think I like Colbert a bit more than Daily Show. But why fight over it? It's not like they're in competition. I can love them both!

I could never understand that either. For some reason, people must choose only one comedy show, one drama, one movie, one cartoon, one video game console, etc. to ONLY like.

What is the inside joke on Bears? I know he constantly uses them as a punchline but is there something that started it?

For the first few ThreatDowns, the #1 threat was bears. I don't really know why, but they had that grizzly graphic that got big laughs, and they ran with it. When it dropped to #2, the crowd booed, so it went back to #1. After that, all the threats were tangentially related to bears, like honey or Charmin. They finally dropped the gag, about the same time they stopped using "truth" in every open, but they return to it from time to time.

I must say that every time there's a ThreatDown without bears in it, I get angry.

Over the past year, Colbert has edged ahead of Stewart to the point where if I can only watch one... it's easily the Report. He consistantly puts on hilarious shows, making me watch religiously every night. I love Stewart too, but frankly I can't stand the majority of the rest of his team on TDS. Colbert's running almost a one-man show with almost no signs of slowing down.

My Tivo get's filled up very quickly from Report's... it's almost painful to delete a good one. Makes me sad we'll never get a lot of these great Colbert moments on DVD.

I'm a big fan of the Alpha Squad 7 fake Sci-fi book. Some of the passages he reads are genius.

I can't wait for the "Filliam H. Muffman vs. Tek Jansen" crossover series.

just because I understood the joke doesn't mean I actually read that type of thing. I get plenty of ass, by the way.

"Just cuz a guy reads comic books, you think he can't start some shit!?"

It wasn't directed at you personally, it was a reference to Tek Jansen in general. I think you got that, but I'm not sure...
