I'll be the __th to point out that The Shield should've been included. Not that I really gave that much of a shit about the Emmys before, but it's impossible to give them even an ounce of merit when they neglect one of the greatest dramatic television seasons ever produced.

Very surpirised that Lost won't be defending its crown
Also somewhat surprised that Gandalfini and Falco didn't get their usual nominations

While I love 24, this was not a great season. It had its moments, but the plotlines become more and more unbelievable every season.
Of course the only way for The Shield to get more attention would be if it were on Fox and not F/X, but then it'd get censored all to hell and wouldn't be as great.

Glad to see Itzin and Smart from 24 in there. And I liked the nods for Pressley and for The Office. But mostly this was an odd selection. Alfre Woodard gets the lone Desparate Housewives nod? Her storyline was generally one of the least-liked elements of the season. She's also nominated for a tv movie... maybe they figured they could save seats that way.
And Jane Kaczmarek gets a sixth straight nomination even though the show has lost its buzz a long time ago. This is not to say she hasn't done good work on the show in later years, but come on... That category is also notable in that 4/5 of the shows are finished. Perhaps they stocked the pack weakly so they could justify FINALLY giving Jane the award.

I'm shocked that Lost isn't there. Can't explain that one in the least.
Glad about :
George Itzen "24"
Will Arnett "Arrested Development" - Finally! (though I'd vote for Piven this year)
Jamie Presley "Earl"
Writng "Everybody's Waiting" - an obvious choice, but still nice to see it there.
Writing "Extras" "Kate Winslet" - The show wasn't great, but that episode certainly was.

Last year it got in top five because it was insanely popular and didn't have to be judged based on one tape to get there.

BTW : How the hell does the show House get nominated but not Hugh Laurie? I've seen that show a few times and gotta say : It's pretty much a one-man show.

One of the many reasons the Emmys are full of shit: all these awards are based on a limited sampling of material viewed by people who may or may not know their context. At least with the Oscars, the voters see a film in its entirety (even if not all of the candidate films). In context, "Severed Dreams" is one of the great television episodes of all time. On its own, it's largely meaningless. So many shows have story arcs now that this isolated episodic process gets worse with each passing year.
I'm not sure which is more hilarious, that The Shield got shutout in a season that was as good, if not better, than all the others ... or those Best Actress in a Comedy noms.

I suppose that I could be distressed that Lost, Veronica Mars, and Entourage got snubbed, more or less, in the major categories, but it won't affect how much I enjoy watching the shows. A few nominations could buy Veronica Mars a full third, and a fourth season.
I am also surprised about the lack of nominations for The Office actors and Hugh Laurie. Also surprised that Will and Grace, The Sopranos, and The West Wing held on to their spots - all had critically panned seasons.
cheers,
