Phil's Departure (uncut)

Big Boy Laroux 07-31-06 10:35 AM

damn, wish they had shown that during the show. would have made complete sense. the way it was presented, it just seemed like they were guessing on his intentions.

Thanks so much for posting that link, candyrocket786. That makes things so much clearer. It was really a disservice to viewers not airing that bit in the first place. I guess they decided not to use the segment because it was about how Phil thought the band really sucked.

rkndkn 07-31-06 07:36 PM

I'm a big Phil fan and very sad he got eliminated.

I can't get on to youtube at work as it's blocked, and I only have dial-up at home and can't watch videos. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could give me a summary of what he says in that exit interview. (I was too late to the Rockstar site and only viewed the video AFTER the edit.) Thank you!

clckworang 07-31-06 09:13 PM

^^^ It's not actually the exit interview. It's the guys talking to him I guess right after he was booted. I'll sum up the best I can without watching it again because I'm lazy.

Dave asks Phil if they get newspapers in the house. Phil tells him no. So, Dave says that they do read the newspaper, and here's an article talking about how you are only doing the show to promote your band and that you didn't like the Supernova music. Phil says that he'll admit he didn't like the first track that he heard but that he loved the other stuff he listened to that he heard after the interview. And Gilby tells Phil that he might say that he has a broken heart about getting eliminated but that the one who really had a broken heart was Tommy because he really went to the mat for him. You kind of got the impression that Phil would have already been cut if it weren't for Tommy. And then they gave the rockers a brief lecture about how all the contestants need to be careful about what they say because it could come back to haunt them and that it's bad enough that stuff is sometimes made up without giving them stuff like what Phil said. Then Phil tried to make a joke saying he didn't really say what was printed. The guys seemed a little pissed at that and just told him it was way too late.

Tommy Ceez 07-31-06 10:03 PM

The quote was "Im just here to promote my band, Im not too stoked about the music that Supernova's putting out"

movieking 08-01-06 06:28 AM

The article that I posted a few pages back in the thread said that most of the singers seemed to agree that the first song they heard from Supernova was not great.

flashburn 08-01-06 07:03 AM

That is what made the listening session so hilarious, with all of the singers lieing out of their asses. "Oh, this sounds fantastic!". It would of been great if someone just said "Oh, this sounds like the most generic rock EVER!"

Josh-da-man 08-01-06 07:34 AM

Yeah, those Supernova samples they played were pretty crappy. Sounded like generic session music that they'd stick in an episode of "Night Court" or "Married with Children" when they needed a rock music but didn't want to pay royalties to a real band.

That was exactly what I was thinking. Sounded like something you would hear on a phone while waiting on hold.

wow, there is going to be yet another Nirvana song on tonight, as Toby sings Pennyroyal Tea.

It's getting really annoying.

yes it is. here is the list I found for tonight:

Dana - Baba O'Riley
Dilana - Can't Get Enough
Jill - Don't You (Forget About Me)
Josh - Santeria
Lukas - Celebrity Skin
Magni - Clocks
Patrice - Higher Ground
Ryan - Losing My Religion
Storm - Changes
Toby - Pennyroyal Tea
Zayra - 867-5309 rotfl

DRG 08-01-06 12:34 PM

Dana - Baba O'Riley
Jordis kicked ass with this last season, interesting to see if Dana keeps her forward momentum or goes back to her old self.

Dilana - Can't Get Enough
What song is this?

Jill - Don't You (Forget About Me)
I like this song, but it could be trouble for her. She may not be distinctive enough to make a song like this work (as opposed to Dilana doing Time After Time last week).

Josh - Santeria
A good choice for his vocals, possibly.

Lukas - Celebrity Skin
I love this song, never heard a male do it though.

Magni - Clocks
I hate Coldplay, this song in particular. I like Magni, but I'll probably be fast forwarding through most of this.

Patrice - Higher Ground
Good choice for her to continue to pull herself out of her rut.

Ryan - Losing My Religion
I'm falling asleep already. It's not a bad song, but it's a bit dull and he's not really charismatic.

Storm - Changes
Could go either way.

Toby - Pennyroyal Tea
Courtney Love cashes in on double royalties this week! Seriously, Nirvana is great and all, but there are a LOT of other great bands.

Zayra - 867-5309
You just know this is gonna be comical. I can already imagine exactly how this is going to sound, where her voice is going to go off, etc.

------------
What's annoying me about the song selections... where is the metal/hard rock? Sure, Supernova "won't be a metal band", even though their song samples sound pretty much along the same lines genre-wise as GnR or Crue. I understand the diversity aspect, but why completely tiptoe around their genre? There should be some of that in the mix. I mean, their sound will probably be closer to Motley Crue than Simple Minds or Coldplay.

I know SOME of it is rights-related, but surely they could get SOMETHING from that 80s hard rock scene... even avoiding their own bands: ACDC, Kiss, Def Leppard, Poison, Bon Jovi, Skid Row, Whitesnake, etc. Or even newer stuff like Velvet Revolver (maybe Gilby would have a problem though) or Buckcherry.

Chrisedge 08-01-06 01:03 PM

I started re-watching last season. It just reminds me how some of the worst people from last year are better than most everyone from this year.

Things I noticed:

Mark Burnett influnence on the show. Last year it seemed real, this year his touch is nowhere to be seen.

INXS was gracious, and kind towards everyone, while giving solid advice.

Dave Navarro was playing the "Tommy Lee" part last year, and INXS offered a nice balance.

The House band sounded 10000% times better last year. I recognize the main guy is still there, but is the guitarist the same? He was WAY better last year. Maybe it's just the sound at the Mayan vs. the phony Mayan? (Did they film all of last season there, or just the first part of the season?)

The biggest problem is, that "Supernova" is a joke of a band. M.B. should have taken longer to find a real band needing a singer instead of throwing together this poor excuse of a band. Watching the whole opening of last year, with them showing INXS in stadiums and such, and the chance for the winner to sing those songs, made for much better TV.

They need to be doing more metal songs in the Performances, and (shock) maybe even doing Metallica/GnR/Motley Crue songs.

from the britpop band Suede

I think the Hole song fits Lukas. It does have the line "when I wake up, in my makeup"...

rkndkn 08-01-06 01:14 PM

clckworang, thank you very much for the summary.

From the reality segments, it looks like Zayra is pulling another strange arrangement on 867-5309 (Jenny). Just get that girl out of there already! I must say she has pretty tough skin, knowing everyone wanted her gone instead of Phil.

Big Boy Laroux 08-01-06 01:55 PM

ChrisEdge, the house band is exactly the same. and they're still really good. i agree, though, they do sound somewhat different. maybe it is the acoustics.

and there needs to be some harder songs. surely they can get the rights to some AC/DC...

I don't know, AC/DC was never sung on the show last year either.

Big Boy Laroux 08-01-06 02:36 PM

yeah, but INXS doesn't have the "harder" image that these guys do. i don;t really remember a whole lot of heavy songs last year, if any.

just finsihed watching the reality show... zayra is going to be AWFUL. i know, big surprise... but she sounded even worse than normal.

one of the house band members basically said: "You want to be different... But you've already done the rearranging thing. many times. for you, different would be singing the song as it's intended to be sung, and killing it. THAT would be different."

Josh-da-man 08-01-06 03:04 PM

Another fucking Nirvana song?

Jesus, Courtney, why you just dig up Kurt and sell little pieces of him on eBay?
