You know who Zayra reminds me of?

This is somewhat obscure, but has anyone ever seen the 1979 movie "Americathon" with John Ritter? She reminds me of the Vietnamese "puke rocker" chick.

I wish I could find a picture of her online, but the schtick is dead-on!

I've seen less than 30 mins of this show (sorry, for barging into your thread, Supernova fans), but both times I've stopped to watch it was because Zayra was singing. I saw her do REM's Everbody Hurts and whatever she did tonight.

She reminds me a lot of Kate Bush and I think she'd be better off going on her own taking an artsy rock route rather than whatever Supernova's sound will be. I personally love her voice and her presence, but feel she's trying too hard to put a hard rock edge into how she sings in order to please the band members.

deadlax 07-26-06 08:39 PM

I haven't heard a single bit of "edge" in her voice. She's like a crosse between Bjork and the Cranberries vocalist.

Patman 07-26-06 08:43 PM

Zayra just sounds like an immigrant who sings with an accent.

aktick 07-26-06 09:18 PM

Did the rest of the contestants not look shocked (and pissed) that Zayra is still around?

magiccmom 07-26-06 09:27 PM

Missed the elimination, but I can not believe that Zayra is still there!???? Who was in the bottom 3... Let me guess, Josh is gone?

Somebody tell me~~~!!

vaporware 07-26-06 10:15 PM

Well, to be fair they did pull strings and she wasn't the short one.

Gil Jawetz 07-26-06 10:24 PM

I have to say, Zayra cast the same weird spell on me tonight that she did on the band. That rendition was weirdly hypnotic and maybe even better than the original.

Is it just me or is the show getting quirkier and more fun recently? I thought it sucked for a while and it sort of still does but it's almost like everyone (the band, the contestants, the producers) all just sort of said "fuck it" and have loosened up in a weird way.

Jadzia 07-26-06 10:29 PM

I think Zayra is realy interesting to watch also.

I thought tonight was funny how all the Supernova guys basically told Jill she was a whore. Pretty ironic coming from those guys.

I picked the wrong week to miss this episode!

Sending Phil home over Zayra just left me :hscratch:, especially when she's so obviously wrong for the band, Supernova. I'm guessing someone thinks she's good for ratings, but I can't stand her.

And Gilby's comment to Jill seemed strange to me, too. I just didn't think she was that shocking (he said predicable, but it was just a short thing, not something to make such a big deal about.). All I can figure is that it's really annoying to have some girl grinding on you when you're trying to play guitar.

This is the only thing that makes any sense. They'll keep her around as long as possible just to spice things up on the show. Pity that they keep sending people home who they admit are improving for this...

Before they let him go, my wife mentioned that she thought that Phil did not seem authentic to her, and that this wasn't his real personality and he was forcing it. I guess the band saw it that way too.

Exactly - trying to play! Perhaps he was annoyed by the distraction because he needed all the concentration he can muster. Sorry, I am a non-guitar playing ex-musician and I find him pathetically over-blown sitting next to Lee and Newsted. :)

Jadzia 07-27-06 07:44 AM

I wonder if Tommy Lee is a Donnie Darko fan?

I question your commitment to SparkleMotion, er, SuperNova!

 There was more to the Phil Ritchie decision than what we were led to believe.

Hopefully, they'll air the footage (we didn't see ) next week. Apparently, Navarro called Ritchie out regarding his comments in the article.

You happened to see the two *exceptions to the rule* performances of hers. In those softer songs her accent doesn't botch up the works. But listen to her do a faster paced song and she's almost the female William Hung.

Well that's what Newsted is there for too. Promoting Voivod.

rkndkn 07-27-06 02:39 PM

I'm quite pissed at the way they eliminated Phil last night. Everyone knows it was simply payback for his quotes that have been floating around for weeks. Yes, it wasn't wise of him to say certain things, but that was really dirty to tell him that was his best performance yet, then dump him. (Second time they've done that.) I know Phil would never have won this, but I think he deserved to be there a while yet, certainly more than certain people who are left. I'm really disappointed for him, and the show will seem much more bland now.

Chrisedge 07-27-06 03:06 PM

By keeping Zayra again over someone that has improved, shows me these guys are ONLY in it for the money/ratings/etc...

Has there been any night where Jason isn't wearing a Voivod shirt?

atlantamoi 07-27-06 03:31 PM

Broken record. Dilana was again about the only thing that came across authentic to me (but Dramarama girl did okay).

Jadzia 07-27-06 03:39 PM

I thought it was funny how Patrice put her hoodie on for a minute, it was like she was trying to channel Dilana.

It was great. They basically called her out for her grinding and how cheap it looked and Jill protested by saying "What's wrong with a woman using her sexuality onstage?" and Gilby Clarke told her that he used to play with Heart and that Ann Wilson would have NEVER done something like that. She was pretty speechless at that. Then they told her that she needs to find another stage presence than acting like that and she said that "Everthing in rock n' roll has already been done before" and they all buzzed her and was like "WRONG ANSWER!"

It was quite the smackdown.

I was really hoping she would be in the bottom 3 because I was sure she would go. She brings absolutely nothing to the show. That Courtney Love performance was the most pathetic thing I have ever seen and she hasn't done anything else remarkable.

I was sort of split on this exchange. I thougth Gilby's Ann Wilson comment was sort of a weak retort... Jill asked about the gender double standard of sexuality on stage and Gilby dodged the question by saying "But Ann Wilson doesn't do it!" That's great for Ann Wilson, but what does that have to do with Jill? And what does it have to do with Jill's question? They told her why she shouldn't HAVE to do it, but they never really elaborated on why she shouldn't BE ALLOWED to do it. If she was coming out every show grinding the band I'd understand, but it was a pretty strong reaction to a lone event.

On the other hand, the "everything has been done before" line was bad news and shows she has a lack of creativity. Granted there's a nugget of truth in there in that most stuff is recycled, revamped, etc. Even new styles have influences that can be traced back. But the newness comes from evolving existing sounds, combining different styles, etc. An attitude like hers shows a lack of vision, and I can understand why a band, especially a new band, would be hesitant to get onboard with someone like that.

Gilby brought up the point about Ann Wilson because in the clip of Jill at the mansion, she stated that Gilby isn't used to being on stage with a woman lead singer and thats the reason he didn't like it. He just wanted to tell everyone that he has played with women lead singers before.

Big Boy Laroux 07-27-06 06:59 PM

certainly surprised as to who went home, but that quote certainly sheds light on the situation. not smart, phil, if you actually wanted to be in the band (which apparently he didn't).
