I didn't even bother to tape the show this year, but I finally have to have a long VMA rant. Scroll on by if you don't like reading.
I still give the VMAs a chance every year b/c there were so many great moments/performances in the 80s and most of the 90s. But these last few years have really been shit. I'm not some cranky old fart acting like everything current is horrible (i'm only 23) but I can't help missing the much better VMAs from the past. I was young but still remember the 1992 show. The performers included GN'R, Nirvana, MJ, the Chili Peppers, Def Leppard, Eric Clapton, En Vogue, The Black Crowes, Pearl Jam, etc. Plus Dana Carvey hosting and playing drums with U2 via satellite, GNR getting the Video Vanguard award and closing the show with Elton John, Van Halen winning Best Video, even silly stuff like Luke Perry touching Fartman's ass and Pinhead making an appearance. This year was often boring for me. It's like woohoo we're in Miami, here comes Shaq, let's everyone kiss his ass once again just like last year *yawn*. About 2 people in the crowd even knew who Luther Campbell was when he made his "surprise" appearance. I loved how they cut to Destiny's Child looking confused and going "what's happening?"
The 2000s have not been kind to the VMAs. The Britney/Madonna/Christina kiss and the Rage guy climbing the set were fun live moments, but that's about all I remember from those shows. I blame you, Wayans Brothers, for starting off the decade as horribly unfunny hosts. Sadly, they wouldn't be the worst. I'd seriously rather have Christian Slater or Roseanne again than Diddy. I'm sorry but the guy just makes me wanna
to Green Day, Shakira, Missy Elliot (actually not annoying for once, despite wearing a white dashiki), and Fall Out Boy. Coldplay were all right but I think I dozed off. You know the VMAs are really sucking when I actually miss Chris Rock ragging on people. They used to have artists like Prince close the show. Now we get a barefoot Kelly Clarkson stomping around sqwawking inaudibly while getting fake rain dumped on her.
That or Blink-182 and dancing midgets.
There's really nothing they can do to really surprise anyone, since Madonna and Michael Jackson have been trotted out for special awards so many times and an uncensored "fuck" just isn't as shocking as it used to be. And no band is worth reuniting unless you resurrect some dead people. A reunion of the original Guns N' Roses would make me a very happy girl, but it'll happen when hell freezes over, so I'm not holding my breath. I honestly can't think of any other band reuniting that I would give a crap about, except maybe The Police but again Sting is stubborn like Axl and into doing his own music so I can't see it happening either. And Van Halen will be fossils by the time DLR rejoins again, so I lost hope in that a long time ago.
So much new music is crap that it's not even fun to laugh at it anymore. It's just pathetic. Hammer getting up there and trying to entertain a crowd one more time at least made me smile, while I was hoping somehow 50 Cent's leather pants would catch fire during his song. And not that this is anything new, but everytime they show a celebrity in the audience they look bored out of their mind. I think Beyonce was the only member of Destiny's Child who smiled the whole night. A lot of people looked ready for the after party after the first five minutes.
At least it wasn't 90% hip-hop like last year, but very little really got me interested enough to even look up from the magazine I was reading. I knew Diddy would irritate me, and he did, pretending to act holier than thou with his "God is the greatest" shirt and then cussing for no reason just to make the teenyboppers giggle. At least he now has competition with Kanye West as to who is the bigger egomaniac/attention whore. His performance was one of the stronger ones, but every time he opens his mouth to praise himself I want to pour bleach down his piehole. Dude, you've sold some records and won some awards, now go buy some humility. If Green Day or any other rock band got up on stage to accept an award and "oh by the way" announced the release date of their new album, we'd never hear the end of it. But every band that won something at least seemed grateful and not like pompous self-congratulating asses.
I was also let down by the overhyped stand-up Dane Cook. I've heard so much good word of mouth about this guy, but I didn't laugh once. He even looked kinda nervous. I'll probably still check out some of his other stuff, since if I remember correctly even Dave Chappelle wasn't all that funny in his brief VMA appearance last year.
I'm a longtime Mariah fan and my boyfriend enjoyed looking at her melons, but sadly her voice just isn't as strong as it used to be. I still listen to her Unplugged album and am amazed how good she sounded live. Now she's often inconsistent and can't hit the high notes and sings way too much in this breathy voice that irritates me. But I'm still glad she's having a "comeback", whatever that means.
I also liked Snoop and Gwen winning for their style, although Gwen should've won some actual awards IMO.
The less said about R. Kelly the better. The only thing that would've made his weird lip-sync mess bearable was for either Chappelle or Jimmy Kimmel to come out afterwards and mock it. It was flat-out embarrassing, worse than the J. Lo and Marc Anthony faux soap opera bit at the Grammys. I really liked a lot of his early stuff, but now I seriously think he's flipped out.
Ok rant over, until next year. I usually don't write this much, but as a longtime MTV fan it makes me sad that I barely even look forward to the VMAs anymore. *jumps off soapbox* Oh yeah and have fun in the big house, Lil' Kim!

I must admit, I did notice that Clarkson was barefoot too. I don't know why, but I just thought it was strange. Atleast she tried to end the show with some energy unlike some previous closing acts of VMAs past.

I actually like Kelly Clarkson.
I thought that 50 Cent and the Game kissed and made up.
I am surprised that no one mentioned Paulina Rubio's outfit. Yowza!
Eva Longoria looked like she was trying to fit it too hard. Put on some clothes!
Dammit! My recording cut off before it ended. How late did it run? The last thing I saw was My Chemical Romance.

I don't know, but it looked like Kelly Clarkson was having a hard time hearing herself....it looked like she started singing it a little differently after some mic problems?

That's pretty much the only VMA's show I remember.

Just some comments responding to what people have said here.
1) Common (the guy with Knoxville on stage) is actually a very talented rapper. Don't take a 10 second VMA rap to make judgements. His new album BE is one of the best I've heard in years. Leave it to the VMA's to even make Common look bad.
2) Same with Dane Cook. You give the guy 2 minutes (awkwardly as hell I might add) and he won't do much damage. I mean, that's not the setting for him to be doing his humor at all. So once again, don't make judgements on him, he IS the real deal. It's amazing how MTV trys to combine 5 billion different things into a Video Music award show.
3) Eva Longoria and Hillary Duff, my God. Duff, IMO, looks amazing. The fact that she is with that tool in that band, if you want to call it a band, kills me.
4) Diddy. Well I don't need to say much. He's bringing us all down. Just run your label and go away for a while. But of course, he won't.
5) Coldplay and Kanye had the best performances. Really good stuff, probably the only thing I enjoyed all night.
I agree that the VMAs continue to get worse every year....looking back only several years ago (when we all thought it was bad), it's amazing how we just continue to decline musically. If it's the Payola, or the record labels being all on the nuts of MTV, there is some serious problem going on, musically. No one can really do anything about it, but maybe one day there will be someone with the power to change things...

Does anyone actually like 50 Cent? Man, In Da Club is one of the best rap songs ever, but other than that, he is one of the worst rappers ever.
I am 25. I can't believe how quickly this thing has gone downhill. That R Kelly thing was just unwatchable.

50 Cent is really starting to piss me off, with all his G-Unit friends. His newest project is the Tony Yayo CD (the guy up at the end of 50's performance) and he is just awful. It's getting embarassing, but I can't say I wouldn't do it to make millions. 50 is doing his thing, from a business standpoint, so I guess you gotta respect that.
Not sure if this was mentioned, but did anyone see Paulina Rubio on stage with Lil Jon presenting the award? Lil Jon was tryin to act all smooth, touchin' her and she wanted none of it, in a very obvious way. Best part of the show

I don't know if anyone caught it in the pre-show, but apparently Mase is now part of G-Unit. I almost spit my drink out when I heard that. I wonder if 50 is going to try and recruit Hammer now?

I dig The Killers but I wish they sang "Smile Like You Mean It". That song kicks SO much ass. R&B/Hip-Hop are the main genre's of music I listen to, but I really enjoyed rock music getting more of the spot light. Like I was saying earlier a lot of rappers have terrible stage shows and really the genre doesn't lend itself to live performances IMHO(especially if you aren't there to get the energy from the crowd). Even if a rock bands stage show is lackluster, at least they're playing instruments.
BTW - I'm 24 and I feel too old for this show as well.

I'll give Alba credit. At least she isn't dressed like a complete hose hound. As for that second pic of J. Simpson.......It looks like the Joker fucked a supermodel and she was the end result.
