As for whether or not Ethan was counted, his name was not on the flight manifest. When the census was taken, that's what they used. I'm going to go with that Ethan was not there in the beginning and snuck in a few eps later and therefore was not counted.
I'm not sure how we can prove one way or the other (baby and Ethan) unless they give us a headcount in an official recap.

Thanks for the scans Lorenzo. The most interesting item I think is Boone's interview (right above this post). Starting from the 4th line in the middle column:
I don't know if this comes from inside information from the cast/producers, or just from what the writer of the article believes he heard, but it seems to suggest the voice did say "We are the survivors of flight 815"
[Boone]took to his grave the possible revelation that there might be other survivors on the island (voices on the radio in said plane suggested as much).

That EW article has some good points, but the producers are dead wrong when they say that characters were not important in The X-Files. Because the heart and soul of that show were the characters of Mulder and Scully. No makers of Lost would be wise to learn this important lession from The X-Files: do not kill off or attempt to go on without crucial characters to the show, as The X-Files did in killing off characters like X, the conspiracy's Consortium, and Alex Krycek, and then trying to go a whole season without Mulder or the Cigarette-Smoking Man. All of these were major mistakes that adversely affected later episodes of the show due to the absence of those great characters.

Now I don't think Boone was crucial to the show, but other characters are. (For instance, if they ever killed off Locke, that would a shark-jumping moment for the show.)

Also, watch closely at the apparent Locke-shot. It doesn't look like a gun hit, but rather a bright light.
As for killing of crucial players, perhaps the death of Locke would not be a bad thing - providing that his death 1) isn't done for shock value and actually turns the story to it's next arc, and 2) a strong character is introduced or steps into his place

I do think the producers painted themselves into a corner telling viewers someone will die. Would have had more of an impact on viewers if it was actually a surprise.
Well for only a few episodes left they have a lot of ground to cover to answer all the questions(that will be answered) mentioned in the article above.

In terms of storytelling, Jack, Sawyer, Locke, Kate and probably Sayid are the main characters, and they wouldn't get killed off unless the actor left the show. I'm guessing Charlie and Hurley aren't going anywhere either because of their fanbase popularity.
