Lucy Ricardo - I Love Lucy
J.R. Ewing - Dallas
Fred Sanford. - Sanford and Son
John Boy Walton - The Waltons
Archie Bunker - All In The Family
it's so hard to pick only 5 from all the shows i've seen throughout the years. The above mentioned characters were just the first that entered my mind. I can't help but also think of the entire casts of M*A*S*H, Friends, and Seinfeld. Then i think back to Crockett & Tubbs from Miami Vice, Sam Beckett from Quantum Leap, all of the Brady Bunch, etc. Geez, for me this list can go on forever.

I'll skip naming no-brainers like Archie Bunker and Andy Sipowicz and suggest 5 more new and worthy names:
Londo Mollari
Dana Whitaker
Robert Hartley
John Crichton
James McNulty
