I just figured that Sawyer was conning him as well.

I found the whole Sawyer story to be lacking. So someone screwed his parents over when he was younger, and it screwed him up. I get that. But why become a sadist? Why let yourself get tortured for no reason? Just doesn't really make sense to me.
His parents killed himself because of a conman that took all of their money. Ever since he was seven years old, he's been wanting to find the person who he feels killed his parents and give him that letter. Fast forward to adult life, and he's in a financial bind. What he chooses to do is become the person he's hated since childhood. He hates himself. And instead of trying to change and move on, he's not willing to forgive himself.

The only thing I don't get about his backstory is why he leaves HIS breifcase with his $140,000 behind in the married couple's house? I mean obviously, he's going to leave THEIR $160,000 behind, but wouldn't he take his money with him when he fled?
Maybe his guilt overtook him so much that all he wanted to do was get out of that house.
Also, did anybody else notice the mistake that when Sawyer was in the pool hall, the guy he borrowed the $140,000 from said it was $160,000?
Not sure that it was a mistake. Sawyer needed to pay the guy back $160,000... he was conning the family out of $160,000. But yeah, it felt funny to me, too.

I think that is a flashback to when he was in Iraq. We will get to see his backstory, and he was tortured

I was kinda hoping Sayid would have gotten a few takers on his trek from the pool of people we haven't seen yet. Easy way to introduce 3-4 more characters.

Pregnant women aren't supposed to eat peanut butter. I think that scene with the empty jar was the best of the night. Charlie slowly turning back into who he was before the drugs took over. That is great character development at its best. Subtle and quirky.

I got that much. I just wasn't clear as to when he took the name "Sawyer." But it is all clear now, thanks!

Damn - that knife wound looked pretty damn gruesome. But let's remember that is okay for the so-called family hour.

It's not a mistake if it was $160K and the-Sawyer-who's-not-on-the-island blew a bunch of it.

Didn't he actually have to pay him back $210,000? The guy in the pool hall said he wanted his money back plus 50%, right?

It's not like we know everything about the people they've already shown. We've seen a snippet of their lives. They could continue doing back stories of just Jack for the rest of run of the show if they wanted to, the material is nearly endless.

correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the only backstory that did not explain why the character was on the flight or in Australia (well, the koreans wasn't well-explained, but it showed them in the airport with Jack).

but overall, I liked it. But if he left that money, I'd think the guy in the poolhall would be mighty pissed, and look to go after Sawyer.

I agree that
Spoiler:
the previews for last week, where sayid is tied down, are a flashback to when he may have been torutured before

I also liked the peanut butter scene. Charlie seems to be recovering quite well, and pretty fast for that matter.

is there any real weak link to this cast? they really seem to be a great group of actors.

My guess. He owed the pool-hall guy money that he couldn't pay him (pool-hall guy said Sawyer owed him the $160k plus 50%), so he just decided to skip town with the guys money.

yeah, that'd be my guess as well, but the other backstories made a point of mentioning it.

Hope this isn't a spoiler, but you're basically right. Future episodes will delve further into the pasts of the survivors. To me, the flashbacks so far have almost raised as many questions as they've answered.

I wonder how many of the characters will be deemed major enough to get their own backstories. I'm guessing we'll still see Shannon/Boone, Michael/Walt, Sayid, and Hurley. Beyond that, I'm not sure.

Wow, somebody has been asleep at the HD switch somewhere at ABC this week. Two segments of Housewives and the first 37 minutes of last night's Lost were not in HD (Whether that's ABC National or ABC Affiliate, I don't know).

You pay all that money to have HD equipment, you kinda like to use it.
It's your affiliate. I have the same problem with my WB affiliate in the Pittsburgh area. Sometimes a show will be in HD, sometimes it won't - hit or miss. They really screwed up this past week though, when Lord Of The Rings aired here non-HDTV.

I'm interested to see the Michael/Walt backstory, as well as Sayid.

Although Hurley's could be interesting, as he runs around generalizing ethnicities. hijinks will ensue.

Me, too.

I can see Kate being attracted to Sawyer because he's the classic bad boy with a good streak. She can change him for the better!!

finally an episode without Shannon's whining.

I hate that they stopped subtitling the Korean dialogue again. Although, I'm sure that I get the gist of what he's saying, I'd still like to know. It'll be interesting to see what happens as the Korean wife becomes more and more helpful to everyone.

They have consistently subtitled the Korean when only Sun and Jin were around and not subtitled it when any non-Korean speakers were present in the scene.

According to a couple of Lost sites:
Spoiler:
you are right about Michael/Walt, Boone/Shannon and Sayid. At least all they will have backstory shows in the next 5 or 6 episodes, along with Claire, Jack, and Kate. No word on Hurley though.
