I think Jack refused to operate on his father.
I think his father had some fatal disease or cancer, his father wanted Jack to operate.... but Jack refused - because it was too risky. The father told Jack as a boy that he has to seperate himself from the situation and not let emotions get involved...because this was his father he felt emotionaly attached and could not help his father.
The father knowing he was going to die left for Australia to drink and drug himself to death (Why Australia? that we will have to find out)

I have to disagree with the people who called this a weaker episode, but I guess that is because I have enjoyed and been immersed in every episode way too much to be able to analytically rate it. This is a great show - the kind of TV show that makes me feel bad for the people who think they are too good for TV.

Did anyone else see the tattered rope (or mabe even bedsheets) hanging below jack when he was hanging off the cliff?
I thought it was part of the tree at first, then I rewound it. There appears to be something like tattered rope (looks like it broke) hanging below him and wrapped around a rock to his right.

Well one still might expect more than 1 Aussie on the plane - either going to the US on business or taking a vacation themselves. I couldn't care less though.

We would care if the kid, the "dude" guy or even the redneck guy dies because we have gotten to know them and it gives meaning to their fates. Can you say you are really broken up about the people that died on the plane? Probably not since you don't know anything about them.

What was with most of the people standing on the beach while they let Jack do all the work? The least one of them could have done was to help Jack bring in the other rescuer, which would then free Jack up to get the girl who was drowning.

More of a risk -- a paniced victim can drown you and controlling the victim in rough, open water is a lot tougher than calm water. A rescue can is strongly advised in rough water rescue. When I was younger, I renewed my Water Safety certificate three times, even though I never worked as a lifeguard. I would have been a little hesitant, although the water wasn't that rough, and I might have tried. I would tried to find some kind of rescue float though.
Oddly, she was a scuba diver. She should have been able to tread water for hours, and have the sense to swim across the rip current until out of it.

The other thing that seemed a little dumb to me was Jack saying he didn't get more than 2 hours of sleep per night. Jeez Jack, are you afraid you're going to miss something, or are you having withdrawal shakes after all the tiny bottles ran out? After 6 days, I would think you could get a little more than a couple hours sleep when they haven't been doing much other than waiting for a rescue. I'm surprised that it's been 6 days already. I would've guessed 3 or 4.

And the guy the Dr rescued was a life gaurd and he got in trouble. I was surprised no one grabbed a seat from the plane, they are a flotation device after all.

FINALLY! After four pages of blathering posts someone gets to the MEAT of the show!

PEOPLE THIS IS THE POINT OF THE EPISODE! What did Jack do? Clearly his father was an alcoholic who pretty much committed suicide. But why did he go to Sydney to do it? Jack also seems to be an alcoholic. What did Jack do to piss off his dad? Did he lose his medical license because of his drinking? Theories anyone? We've probably seen tons of clues about this already - including the swimming incident.

Perhaps there's another reason why the book's in there, but the overall story is sufficient for me.

I remember they had a longer sequence with it in the deleted scenes on the DVD.

I know it sounds stupid but what Locke said to Jack about the island make me think that it has some sort of "power".
