Lots of different theories going around. A lot of people are thinking that they are no longer on Earth as it's not plausible to have such a large creature that has never been discovered.
One thing I found odd, the pilot said they were 1000 miles offcourse due to the turbulence... how quick does this plane fly? I mean damn... did they take a 3 hour detour, the scene on the plane was so short I assumed the turbulence lasted maybe 10 minutes and they crashed.

My wife kept screaming “It’s the monster from the ID!!!” through the whole damn second half.
We’re both big Forbidden Planet fans. And it did sound pretty close…
(If they run into a giant domesticated robot next week, I guess I owe her dinner.)

I'll say one thing. This is one of the biggest TV threads in a long time, other than 24, so it's apparent that this show has some buzz.

I thought the first 10 minutes were absolutely fantastic. I loved the soundstage and how chaotic the post-crash scene appeared to be.
I too hope the 'creature' won't be the dominant theme of the show.
And now, some burning questions:
1) What about that dog? I guess we find out soon enough.
2) Any reason for Jack to end up in the bamboo instead of with the rest of the wreckage?
3) Any 'scientific' reason for these folks to be relatively unscathed despite the plane coming apart at 40,000 feet?
4) Was that Charlie who rushed to the front of the plane in the flashback scene? Was that related to his desire to accompany Jack and Kate on their search for the cockpit?
5) Is Jack an alcoholic?
Feneant -- the plane diverted because the radio went out. Then later they hit the turbulence.

Amazing pilot, spoiled only by two frickin' hours of "The Bachelor", as if we needed that tripe. The scene on the beach was astounding, and there are enough questions being raised to keep me hooked.
Sweet Zombie Jesus, are all the commercials for ABC programming that annoying? It just made me want to avoid ABC in every other way.
I've got some theories as to what's going on, but I'm keeping them to myself.
And yes, I think Terry O'Quinn is supposed to be a "special person".

On transoceanic flights, planes are off radar for hours, depending on HF communications and doing what the long range controllers tell them -- sticking to cleared flight paths. As they approach coast and reappear on radar, they need to be coming from an expected direction and with a functional transponder or there will be a great deal of "concern."
So, from the time their radio went out, they were going 580 mph, at least part of the time in a direction other than what rescuers would assume.
The implausible part of course, is all communications going out, but the little five watt walkie-talkie is going to save them.

The pilot explained that semi-plausibly. He said all their radio communication gear (including transponder) was out and they couldn't be "seen" (actually, id'd on radar) and had turned around (or diverted?) rather than proceeding as a result. Then they hit the turbulence and went down. I'm a little fuzzy on whether they were proceeding to a closer airfield than original departure point. But that had no way of communicating that.

We may see additional footage of the crash, from different perspectives, like additional puzzle peices, throughout the season for all I know...

If the dog belonged to the father and son, why would they show it hiding in the bushes, unseen by Jack and company? My take on that shot is that it was meant to communicate that the dog was already on the island before the crash.
Note also that the dog was wearing a collar.

From AICN, here's a quote from co-showrunner Damon Lindelof re: the thing in the jungle:
AICN: You’re on record as saying there are no dinosaurs on the island. Will we get a look at one of the giant tree-stomping creatures within the first 13 hours broadcast?
DL: The record speaketh true. NO dinosaurs. Will you get a look at the "thing in the trees" in the first 13? I'll only say this -- maybe you'll see it, maybe you won't... but you'll definitely know much more ABOUT it.

I doubt that's an actual AICN interview. It would go more like this:
AICN: [30 paragraphs that have nothing to do the show] OMG OMG OMG LOST ROCKS IT'S SIMPLY THE BEST SHOW EVER AND I LOVE IT [30 more paragraphs that have nothing to do the show]
DL: I'm sorry...was there a question in there?

Just crappy filming either way. If it's the father/son's dog then like you said, that scene doesn't make sense. If it's not, then the dialog about "that wasn't (insert dog name) doesn't make sense.
The collar doesn't clear things up as it could still be the father/son's dog or someone else.

I can't tell you the last time I watched a 1-hour episode of anything on ABC. But I was intrigued by the premise and buzz on Lost, so I tuned in. Was not disappointed. I liked the mystery of the whole thing (there is some major over-analyzing in this thread), and am looking forward to part 2 of the pilot.

Loved the show, so far.
SO can anyone confirm that what I saw last night is just the first hour of the pilot that everyone has mentioned and not a chopped up, edited, and pieced version? Thanks.

Great Show. One of the best pilots ever. It had me on the edge of my seat the entire time.
