Real Time with Bill Maher (HBO) - Series Discussion Thread

Re: HBO's BILL MAHER new season
During the panel, I was waiting for Bill or anyone else to bring up the Andrew Breitbart manipulated video of Shirley Sherrod's speech at the NAACP dinner. I was really surprised and disappointed that it was never brought up or mentioned by reference since Breitbart was so vocal during the show. WTF?
Another reason why conservatives are still far out in the lead when it comes to getting their message out.
I think it's proper that he keep things civil, but only Jon Stewart seems to be prepared for when a guest gets nasty or lies to return fire.

I wouldn't be surprised if Mccain got pretty pissed at Tillman during the funeral. For those that didn't see the clip, Mccain basically told Richard "i'm sorry for your loss, your brother is up in heaven right now", and during the eulogy, Richard said "i'm sorry, my brother isn't in heaven, he's fuckin dead"

I love a good rebel as much as the next person but Kevin Tillman does not fit the bill. To get up at a funeral and say my brother is not in heaven he is fucking dead in direct response to a speaker your family approved to speak at the memorial service is just tacky. At the time of the service, the cover up of Pat Tillman's death had not come to the surface, so their was no reason to rage against a politician.

When did Republicans take the lead in religious nonsense? I always thought that was the realm of the southern Democrats?

I'm guessing Bill was just trying to be cordial with him. There was a point where Andrew said he was holding back, and Bill said he was, too. Andrew is the scum of the Earth, though.

If Breitbart made this demand, I can see Maher agreeing to it. Maher's justification would be that the Sherrod episode was not topical. But considering that I've never heard of Breitbart except in connection to the Sherrod fiasco, Maher not bringing it up was really noticeable, so there had to be some reason for that.
I like and respect Maher, but if all he can get on his panel are liberals who agree with him then the show is boring, and he knows that.

Re: HBO's BILL MAHER new season
When Breitbart bragged that he had been holding back on the show, Maher responded back that he had been holding back as well by not asking Breitbart about race. I suppose Maher thought that the Sherrod issue was old news, and it was pointless to turn the show into a shouting match about it with his guest.
If Bill agreed to a conditional appearance, then that's b.s. He comes off as someone who wouldn't go for that, and I'm sure there are other conservative pundits who would gladly come on Bill's show if for nothing else to plug their book or have their voice heard so they remain in the public eye and therefore relevant.

I thought Kevin Tillman came across as a moron during the show. McCain was asked to speak and anyone should know that a Republican is going to talk about heaven at a memorial service. Maybe it was the hurt that the Tillman family was experiencing that caused that but with the filter of time it does not do any good to show that. I am going to refer to what Christopher Hitchens as said about Christians coming up to him saying they are praying for him during his cancer battle. I do not have the exact quote, but he has said that many of them are very decent people and that they are expressing their concern for him in the best way they know how and that he is truly touched by the gesture.

I want to say it started with Clinton getting blowies in the Oval Office... W ran his campaign on "bringing back morality to the presidency." It was all downhill from there. The Republicans realized they could get both the religious sheeple and the wall street fat cats on their side by speaking out of both sides of their mouths.

There was a shit-storm for about a week over this story, and there had never been any public comment whatsoever from Breitbart or a surrogate spokesperson explaining his actions which set said shit storm in motion. Is there legal action pending. If not, there really should be. The guy pretty much intentionally created an edited video which assassinated Sherrod's character as being a racist who used her position of power to discriminate against whites.

I guess I'd want to know why Senator McCain was at the memorial? Was he invited by the Tillman family? If so, then Kevin's reaction was completely out of line. Did Senator McCain invite himself so he could get good press by associating himself with a fallen hero? If so, then I'm OK with how Kevin reacted.

Re: HBO's BILL MAHER new season
Without knowing specifically, McCain is a Senator from Arizona. Tillman played football for the AZ Cardinals. The family most likely resides there. McCain's office office was either contacted by the family to speak or he offered to do so. I agree it was a bit tacky of Kevin to say that, but I cut him a lot of slack due to the nature of the occasion.
From what it sounded like during the interview, a "third party" (the military maybe?) brought in McCain, Shriver and possibly others (I haven't seen the film).

If Muslim guy got up at a Christian's funeral and said "He's with Allah now" this thread would be on page 50 with all the outrage.

Not that it really matters, but it was Richard Tillman on the show, not his other brother Kevin.
As for the funeral stuff...I find it to be great. It was blunt and raw, and given the circumstances I think we could all agree that its not out of the question to be in that state, but it was truth for him and his brother. I'm pretty sure Richard had a better grasp on what Pat would and wouldn't want his death to be a platform for. And I also side with it being on the person doing the speaking to know where they're at and maybe be the ones that choose their words in relation to the family, rather than assume everyone is like them.
It seems like this may be a real touchy subject for the family in general though.

Yes, but America is a Christian nation and Allah is a false god and most likely a lie put forth by Satan to keep people away from the truth of Jesus.

Can I just comment on how badly unprepared, simplistic and douchey Seth McFarlin came off as during that round-table? First time in the history of Real Time that the liberals were over-matched. Impossibly, he seemed even less funny than I imagined him to be based on his TV shows.
