Quibi Streaming service - RIP 4/6/20 - 12/1/20

re: Quibi Streaming service - RIP 4/6/20 - 12/1/20
I know I’ve laughed at this service before but I feel kinda bad if they don’t make it. They’ve got some quality content I enjoyed which is all I really want in a streaming service. I just don’t think people care about the 9 minute episodes concept and the name they chose isn’t doing them any favors. My mom asked me what’s this Kwee-B thing and I told her I think it’s pronounced Q-B. Heck I don’t even know for sure.

Honestly, if they launched with TV support at the start they could have had a better chance. They launched early for people stuck at home but no one wants to watch on their phone. Many are working at home so the phone is the last thing they want to see.
Having big screen support at launch would mean those folks can watch an episode or two at lunch or break instead of whatever YouTube free has. Parents who need a respite for their kids “school” and “after school” activities can watch something while the kids are busy doing something else.
Sure the “turntable” concept would not be used but I’ve only encountered two Reno 911! episodes that actually use the technology. One has the camera angle change from the “documentary crew” to the “streaming phone” and another also swaps from the “documentary crew” to Lt. Dangle’s body camera.

Quibi is now developing a dedicated TV app for Roku, Amazon.
Looks like they finally realized their business model, especially during a worldwide pandemic, was flawed.

Based on this article (and several others), I’m guessing this service will be dead in the next year or two. They need to embrace the larger screens which they swore wouldn’t do because it goes against their intended purpose. With lackluster and minimal shows, once they go to streaming platforms, it’ll just be another service. And people are flocking to the much bigger ones.

Most amazing thing about that article : Reese Witherspoon got paid $6M to do narration for a nature documentary that runs well under an hour in total.
And her husband is an executive with the company. Recipe for disaster, and I love me some Reese but that's insane. They deserve to crash and burn.

Quibi isn’t a competitor to Netflix or Disney+
They failed to realize they are really a competitor to YouTube - quick videos on the go.

Quibi's mission statement - We're on a mission to entertain, inform and inspire with fresh content from today's top talent—one quick bite at a time (quoted from their LinkedIn page)
We're not talking about 30 minute / 1 hour TV shows or 2 hour movies like Netflix and Disney+. YouTube and Quibi feature quick videos (less than 10 minutes) from "top talent". Yes I know, "top talent" can be subjective. And yes I know if you add up all the Quibi content, it can theoretically be a 2 hour movie. But that's not what Quibi is marketing. Quibi is marketing "quick bites".
YouTube invested billions on infrastructure. The users take on the cost of creating the content.
Quibi invested more than a billion (so far) on infrastructure and content.
And that's why one is successful (YouTube) and one is not (Quibi), in regards to "quick videos on the go". And why I believe they are the true competitors to each other.

The new mobile-first streaming service Quibi is here and it’s brought us a handful of these original Movies in Chapters including Most Dangerous Game starring Liam Hemsworth. Together, all of the sub-10-minute chapters of Most Dangerous Game will equal one feature length film...
“Most Dangerous Game” is a feature film that has been rolling out in daily installments on Quibi. As of Thursday, April 23, all installments of the film have been fully released, and right now it’s the best movie out there — even though it can’t quite be experienced as a movie ... Just one bit of advice for Quibi: This movie took almost two weeks to be released, one episode at a time. Nobody wants to watch a movie that way.
I watched Reno 911 on it, and it was just like the TV show version... but in shorter chunks. I watched Flipped on it, and really enjoyed it, and then it was quickly over. I haven't watched anything else on it, although I think I still have a month or so left on my 90 day trial.
This Youtube video does a good disassembly of everything wrong with Quibi. It's from a channel that's normally political, but this video doesn't get political until literally the last minute, more as a punchline.

Reminder the 3 month free trial ends today for most of you.
So cancel unless you really like the service and don't mind paying for it.

I may re-sign up again to binge The Fugitive when that series is fully available.
But, other than that, I think I'm going to pass on this. Better off signing up for Peacock instead.

I'm guessing they held onto Kevin Hart's project until after people's free trials would run out to try to keep some subs.

re: Quibi Streaming service - RIP 4/6/20 - 12/1/20
Here's a long article on quibi. Lots of insider stuff that may or may not be true or accurate. Lots of stuff we knew already from inception, though:
https://www.vulture.com/2020/07/is-a...ing-quibi.html
https://www.vulture.com/2020/07/is-a...ing-quibi.html
A bigger question was whether they were doing the math on something that might be worth considerably less than it appeared to be. One media investor suggested the quality of Quibi’s lineup reflected “an adverse selection bias.” In other words, Quibi is getting A-talent’s B-material, or else producers’ desk-drawer scripts, which haven’t been able to attract a more established buyer. “If we have a show that’s going to be a huge hit, you pitch to Netflix, HBO,” says a producer with a project at Quibi. “If it doesn’t get traction, you pitch to Quibi.” Indeed, many of the shows Quibi picked up had been widely shopped elsewhere beforehand.
People have wondered why Katzenberg and Whitman, in their late and early 60s, respectively, and not very active on social media, would believe they have uniquely penetrating insight into the unacknowledged desires of young people. When I ask Whitman what TV shows she watches, she responds, “I’m not sure I’d classify myself as an entertainment enthusiast.” But any particular shows she likes? “Grant,” she offered. “On the History Channel. It’s about President Grant.”
Katzenberg is on his phone all the time, but he is also among the moguls of his generation who have their emails printed out (and vertically folded, for some reason) by an assistant. In enthusing about what a show could mean for Quibi, Katzenberg would repeatedly invoke the same handful of musty touchstones — America’s Funniest Home Videos, Siskel and Ebert, and Jane Fonda’s exercise tapes. When Gal Gadot came to the offices and delivered an impassioned speech about wanting to elevate the voices of girls and women, Katzenberg wondered aloud whether she might become the new Jane Fonda and do a workout series for Quibi. (“Apparently, her face fell,” says a person briefed on the meeting.)

Katzenberg and Whitman also point out that they stocked the Quibi offices with young employees who are in the demographic they’re trying to reach. But “there was an incredible lack of knowledge of the audience and dismissiveness of the audience,” another ex-Quibite says. “A thing Jeffrey always says is ‘I’m not a child or mother, but I made movies children and mothers loved. I know millennials better than millennials.’ ” Katzenberg had at times been well served by his intuition, and he remained convinced of its acuity. “I say, ‘Where’s your data?,’ ” Whitman says of their contrasting styles. “He says, ‘There is none. You just have to go with your gut.’ ”

Despite not partaking in Quibi, I do enjoy reading articles about Quibi (seriously). It’s a great lesson on business failure and will be discussed in many college courses in the future.
And maybe David Fincher will make a movie.

Quibi is doomed. An estimated 90 pct defection rate after the free trial expired.
However I read several shows in the service got second season renewals. Most recently Most Dangerous Game.

My free 90 day trial is up at the end of the month. I still have yet to open the app, even to poke around.
Maybe this weekend I'll binge Reno 911.
As much fun as it is seeing a stupid, costly venture tank, I do find the constant comparisons to Disney+ questionable. Sure, they both launched kind of around the same time, but one service is by the biggest entertainment brand in the world and featured a very high profile series spun off from one of the most successful movie franchises ever. The other launched entirely from scratch. They're on two different levels. Maybe the money sunk into each is comparable, which I guess would align them closer, I dunno. But I guess internet writers have to write about something.

The price point they decided on was insane given the scarcity of content provided. Nobody wants to pay $5 a month for that. Maybe $2.99 and $25/yr and I might have given it a go. But nobody will pay $5 to watch a streaming service where even their top series only run for a movie's worth of content. Honestly I am kind of surprised that 10% opted to keep paying for it. I assume most forgot to cancel.
