Apple Buys Older Shows for TV+, Stepping Up Netflix Challenge

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...flix-challenge

Apple is acquiring older movies and shows for its TV+ streaming service, aiming to build a back catalog of content that can better stack up against the huge libraries available on Netflix, Hulu and Disney+.

The company’s video-programming executives have taken pitches from Hollywood studios about licensing older content for TV+ and have bought some shows and movies, according to people familiar with the matter.

The move represents a subtle strategy shift for Apple TV+, which launched in November with a lineup of original programs. The company plans to keep TV+ focused on original shows, and hasn’t yet acquired any huge franchises or blockbusters for its back catalog, according to the people, who asked not to be identified because the deliberations are private.

Add a dozen new high caliber movies and I'll drop $4.99 and use the service for a month.

So only 70 million x 12 = 840 million for them to invest for that 4.99 one time subscription.

Kind of makes you wonder how much Netflix has spent on programming. Disney to a lesser extent, but they have a nearly a century of amassed material. And now Apple.

Apple has almost 210 billion in cash reserves. They'll get there. This is the slow game.

If you are a current Apple TV+ subscriber they are offering Showtime/CBS All Access bundled $9.99 a month. They also give you a 7-day trial on top of it.

Via your Apple TV app. I did it via my Macbook. But you have to be an Apple TV+ subscriber otherwise it charges you full price.

Here's the official press release and from reading it, it does not look like it's a limited time deal in terms of price. It seems like it's for as long as you stay an Applet TV+ subscriber, which for me is a no-brainer. So yeah, it' about $15 for all three a month. You can also shave off an extra $10 per year if you pay for the entire year ($49.99) of Apple TV+ upfront instead of month to month.

Done. I never watch Apple TV, but that is a good deal.
Now you can only watch through an Apple TV app though, right? There are Showtime and CBS All Access apps through Playstation or Xbox One but not an Apple TV app.

I believe so. Just within the Apple eco-system. I had Showtime via Hulu and CBS All Access via Amazon and I canceled them both and just moved over to the Apple TV app. Also, CBS All Access via Apple TV is the commercial-free plan.

Yep I signed up. I still have AppleTV+ free thru early November. I'll switch to the yearly plan then.

I wonder if you can use your Apple credentials to log in to the CBS All Access app like you can with an Amazon account.

I had read there are still some things available via the All Access app not available via Amazon or Apple (like live streaming) and some bonus features of programs.

Oh wait, you can't view the Big Brother streams via Apple?

Does Showtime have that option as well?

I believe they do, but you have to do it via the Showtime Anytime app. I have that synced with my Hulu account and was able to access Penny Dreadful: City of Angels and Black Monday in 4K.

I signed up for the bundle. Thanks for posting. I was already paying $9.99 a month for CBS All Access. I might as well get Showtime and try out Apple TV+

re: Apple TV -- streaming service

So I've been using the Apple TV app to view some of the tv series I bought recently on sale from itunes.

Is it just me or is the interface horrible? linear, horizontal listings, and for the anime I bought, which is split up into two parts for one season, they basically have two episode 1s, 2s, etc. with no indication which is actually 'act 1'

Maybe it's just the fire tv interface or something.
