After HBO Drops Off Amazon Prime, WarnerMedia Intros HBO Max 50% Off Deal — For All New or Former Customers

WarnerMedia is trying to help offset the loss of about 5 million HBO subscribers who had signed up through Amazon in the U.S. with an aggressive discount offer on HBO Max.

As of Sept. 15, HBO subscriptions through Amazon Prime Video Channels officially shut down. But WarnerMedia is angling to get those customers back: Starting Friday, those who accessed HBO via Prime Video Channels — as well as all new and returning HBO Max subscribers in the U.S. — can sign up for the premium HBO Max ad-free monthly plan at a 50% discount.

The new limited-time promotion lets eligible customers get HBO Max for $7.49/month for six months; after that, the rate goes up to the regular $14.99/month. WarnerMedia began promoting the deal Friday on hbomax.com; customers also can sign up through Apple, Google, LG, Microsoft, Sony, Roku and Vizio.

The 50% off deal is available in the U.S. only through Sept. 26, and is squarely targeted at Amazon Prime users who have just lost access to HBO and HBO Max.

So from that I assume this doesn't stack if you have an existing sub, right?

It doesn't stack for existing subscribers.

We are a regular $14.99/mo subscription. Been thinking about the annual $149.99/yr prepay. Just received an offer via email for $109.99/yr prepay. Definitely jumping in at that rate.

Check your email for this offer if you are a regular monthly subscriber.

I didn't get the email. But I checked my account, and the $109.99 annual offer was available when I tried to switch plans. That's a pretty good deal.

I was having all kinds of issues with the HBO Max app on my Apple TV last night (Friday). Was either crashing or only playing audio when I selected something. Finally cleared up today - but that's the first problem I've had with HBO Max on my Apple TV. It was working fine through my main LG (my TV's) app selection and no other apps on my Apple TV seemed to have an issue. Don't know if it was a universal problem or "just me."

You can’t. When you activate the year plan, they prorate credit any time you currently have left on your account, and then the one year supersedes everything.

I really wish they would get their shit together with regard to gift cards. Sitting on 5 of them and looks like I may miss out on all of these deals because they are fucking incompetent in handling them.

Thanks for the heads-up on the $7.50/month. I have been waiting for a reduction in cost and started my subscription. Now to catch up on the West World season I missed. Any other suggestions of good shows I should be sure to catch during my 6 month discount window?

Thanks for the recommendations. I will try out Titans and Hacks. Not really into animation so will skip Superfriends. Dex, I was not sure what you were recommending out of that HBO Max preview. Only saw maybe two shows including Dune that I would even consider with those previews.

I was hoping for movies that I missed like The Joker and Us, but they are not (no longer?) on HBO Max. Oh well, I can still see the movies that got bad reviews like Wonder Woman and Godzilla.

fujishig 09-20-21 09:01 AM

re: Max — Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service

Too bad you're not into animation because the Harley Quinn show is also pretty good (but very adult).

It wasn’t posted as a reply to you.

For the stuff I've watched on HBO Max:
  • Doom Patrol - a wacked out DC comics adaptation with a dark sense of humor.
  • Harley Quinn - animated, but violent with cursing, and very funny.
  • Wellington Paranomal - new episodes premiering every Monday, a spin-off of What We Do in the Shadows. Lots of improv style comedy.

Also, for "regular HBO" stuff on it, if you haven't watched Barry yet, you should watched that. There's also some solid documentaries like I'll Be Gone in the Dark and Q: Into the Storm.

I just started watching The Wire and Babylon 5, both of which are HD remastered (save the first episode/pilot of B5, because the film was lost in a fire).

For movies, I don't know if it's licensing or what, but they cycle in/out WB titles. There is a "Last Chance" category one can view to try and be sure to catch a film before it leaves the service. For example, the last chance to watch Doctor Sleep is today:

Still hoping at some point they start offering up their series in 4k. Much of their stuff is shot digitally in 2k and 4k now, so we know the content is there (especially the shows that were on DCU last year). I wonder what the hold-up is?

Warrior (2 seasons with a 3rd on the way) is very good.
Watchmen (1 season limited series) is weird and also good.

Just watched the first episode. Looks like this has the potential to be a good series. Thanks BackStJoe for the recommendation.

BTW... finished the third season of West World. It started with a GREAT first season and continuously dropped over the next two seasons. Well worth watching Season 1. Not sure if I would recommend Season 2 or 3.

Ok, for those of us who have HBO Now gift cards to use, I figured out how to do it where you can stack them all. You have to enter them in as different transactions, but I got them to work. I burned off all my gift cards and am good now until July 2022.

Downside to this is you can't get the promo price they are offering right now. Maybe I will contact them tomorrow to see if I can get that price. Anyway, what you do is go to this site: https://subscribe.hbonow.com/gift

Enter GC code, state and zip. It will take you to next page, where you click sign in and enter your existing HBO Max information. That should get the card to redeem. I did 6 total cards just now and can confirm they all stacked on top of each other.

Edit: to my surprise, they have CSRs working right now. I chatted with one. They couldn't figure it out, so they escalated the issue to a higher department. Hopefully I can get that $7.49 promo price. I redeemed $150 in gift cards, so if I get the promo, that would give me 13 months.

For West World? You need to watch it from the very beginning. It's heavily serialized.

Yeah Titans you need to see from the very beginning. You would miss character development and story set up just jumping in now.

you absolutely need to watch from the beginning…you wouldn’t start Game of Thrones mid-season three!

Oldboy, why would you start any recent show that only has about 20-25 eps and only 2-3 seasons.

I didn't think it would need it's own thread but a new documentary dropped. What Happened, Brittany Murphy?

2 one-hour episodes. I never dug deep into her life and death, so I learned a few things. Some parts still pretty sad to watch.

$$$ from Physical 4K Blu Rays is my best guess. They must be making good money to hold out on streaming.

He's talking about the TV shows, not the movies. There's no TV shows broadcast on the service in 4K, however select movies are including the new 2021 releases.
