Re: DC Universe streaming service
Swamp Thing is filming here, and local news just posted:
WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - DC Universe’s Swamp Thing will end production earlier than expected in Wilmington, according to crew members working on the show.
Cast and crew members got word of the changes during filming on Tuesday night. The reaction on the set was one of shock, said sources who did not want to be named.
The show was scheduled to premiere on a new DC Universe streaming service at the end of May. Leaders in the film industry expected it to shoot several seasons in Wilmington.
We don’t yet know what this means for the future of viewing the show.
Sources: Production of DC Universe’s Wilmington-shot series to end early as Warner Bros. evaluates future of DC Universe streaming service
WILMINGTON -- The locally filmed television series “Swamp Thing” has found itself bogged down by some unexpected news.
The currently in-production project is being shut down earlier than expected as its producer, Warner Bros., evaluates the future of its DC Universe streaming service, on which the series was scheduled to premiere May 31, according to several sources within the local industry.
Local crew members were notified of the unexpected development Tuesday night, and were told the project would wrap production on episode 10 and then halt as writers and producers rewrite an ending. Initially, the show was scheduled to film 13 episodes through May.
It is unclear when that ending would be shot in Wilmington, though several more days of reshoots for previously filmed episodes are expected.

Just heard some local rumors that Titans and Doom Patrol have been sold to Netflix to recoup some cash.

I just went to the DC U boards and the mods have denied these rumors saying they’re pure speculation.
Another possibility is the show is way over budget. It seems that Swamp Thing is very special effects heavy.
No streaming service, especially less than 1 year in, can be profitable. Look Netflix years in has a ton of debt and Hulu lost over $1.5B last year.

The rumors I've heard is that AT&T is re-evaluating all the companies streaming services in reaction to the Disney+ presentation from last week. This may indicate that AT&T may be thinking something along the lines of consolidating their streaming services into one big streaming service. As of last year AT&T/Warnermedia had something streaming service planned that would include HBO, WB movies and TV shows. Now this may include the whole DC Universe, WB Archives, TCM, Boomerang and any other thing that falls under their corporate umbrella.

He's obviously joking about the veracity of "local rumors."
Though it does make sense that AT&T is reevaluating considering Disney+ is a buck less than this. But whatever they do, I hope they keep the comics section somewhere, besides the original series that's really the main differentiator.

Yeah its rumors from people on production, so who knows. But yeah I feel like this is reactionary from Disney+ and WB wants to fold it all together.

Actress Virginia Madsen confirmed the shut down Wednesday morning on Instagram with a post that read:
“I’m beyond sad. What a terrible decision. We have been cut to the core by those who have never set foot into the Swamp. And despite the rule I am going to use the hashtag. #swampthing.”
The post was deleted minutes later.

As expected, DC Universe will be folded into the new WarnerMedia service to cut operating costs and consolidate existing subscriber bases.

WarnerMedia head John Stankey said WM's streaming service will be fronted by HBO with additional WM brands chipping in (expected). It will cost more than HBO Now service ($14.99/month). Given those 8M subscribers, WM's streamer could beat Disney outta the gate, but long term....

So far no major media outlet is reporting the Swamp Thing news nor the speculation about DC Universe.
It's all the small Comic/Pop Culture blogs running with the local news.

Swamp Thing is a HUGE deal here after a lot of productions have pulled out the last few years. So it's no surprise local media is all over this story.

Consolidations in streaming may overall be less expensive than the alarm carte niches we have now. I'm thinking if not careful we could be paying more than we did for cable with the only advantage being on demand content we'd actually watch. May have to trim the fat in the coming 18 months.

DC Universe should always been an a-la-carte feature of an overall AT&T/WB streaming platform. I love the service and pay for it but at $7/month it's unsustainable.

The main drawback is going to be stuff like internet caps.

Re: DC Universe streaming service
The running assumption right now is that Swamp Thing got shut down due to budget reasons. I can definitely see that as a possible factor. I believe the show has a lot of special effects and they may have run over budget.
Another potential reason is maybe the studio is not happy with how the show is going. Look, it's April 17th and we have not seen even 1 trailer or promotional spot for it. When Titans was first announced, we had a full length trailer at San Diego Comic Con before it premiered in October. Nothing from Swamp Thing. Even Doom Patrol had promotional spots and trailers running a few months before it aired.

There's a tweet that mentions creative differences. Still crappy to just tell them after they've shot 10 episodes that they need to rely on reshoots and otherwise make what they have into a season finale. You'd think they'd be aware of any budget reasons at least a couple of episodes in advance.

From the DC Universe Message board:
"Hi, everybody! We have some updates to share regarding the details of the upcoming DC Universe Original Series, Swamp Thing.
We remain as excited as ever for the thrills and chills to come, but we would like to share a few notes regarding the series and DC Universe:
Swamp Thing is still set to release on 5/31 on DC Universe.
Swamp Thing’s first season will run for 10 episodes, versus the previously announced 13 episodes.
This was made for creative reasons, and do not reflect the future of DC Universe.
What DOES reflect the future of DC Universe are our recent exciting announcements, including the launch of our service on the highly requested Xbox One, as well as the expansion of our comics library from 2,500 titles to over 20,000.
We continue to thrive beyond all our wildest expectations, and are incredibly excited to keep building a platform for fans, informed by fans. This is all the information we have at this time, but stay tuned! We’ll be continuing to talk all things Swamp Thing, from comics to figures to screen, in the weeks ahead! "
