Now they need to work on the live TV menus.

I've had that User Interface on Roku for some time now. Did I get an early update?

Re: Hulu -- News and Notable New additions

I just hope it works. The last really big GUI change they rolled out had so many bugs. I doubt they did much testing back then, and probably had a bunch of "yes men" that weren't brave enough to say it sucked. I seem to remember 3 or 4 big updates from different companies that year that were all broken. I think iOS was one of them.

VHYES, easily one of my top movies of last year, is now available to stream on Hulu. Y'all should check it out.

Re: Hulu -- News and Notable New additions

I’ve had Hulu Live since August 2019, and today, I started having issues not getting my local channels on my Firestick. I’m getting local channels for a city an hour away.

Seems like a common issue (from what I can find on google), but has anyone here had this issue?

Had to reboot my modem today, so my IP address may be presenting a different location (no VPN). Hulu thinks I changed my “Home” location, hence the reason why I’m getting the wrong local channels.

Oddly, I’m getting the correct local channels on my PC and tablet, just not the Firestick (TV). Also a common symptom for this problem according to google searches. And I can’t figure out how to fix it. No easy solutions via google search.

Contact Hulu Support, apparently they can fix those issues. The only semi-recommendation I've seen outside of that wa to uninstall/reinstall Hulu.

Re: Hulu -- News and Notable New additions

That is interesting that local is IP based and not billing address based. I do suppose that could be helpful for people who travel to see local news where they are. Yet it would also be nice to get local news from back home. Seems they could allow the user to configure based on their desire.

Re: Hulu -- News and Notable New additions

Thanks for your responses. I did two things:
  • Hulu Chat - did not like this. The chat person wanted me to go onto a 3rd party IP address checker website to confirm my IP address. F that. So I made up an excuse and left the chat.
  • Hulu Phone Call - this was much better and the problem was resolved. Just needed to confirm my username and Home location address. Without telling the person my IP address, she could already determine the wrong local channel location, based on login data (which I already knew). She did quick correction to my zip code in their system and the problem was fixed in less than 5 minutes. As for the local channels being correct on my PC and tablet, she mentioned those devices can track locations easier, while the Firestick did not.
So it is a common problem with a quick solution. Do a phone call, don't do the chat to fix it.

Re: Hulu -- News and Notable New additions

Wondering if anyone has experienced this issue. We watch Hulu on a Roku Express. We have the Hulu with ads and recently it has been cutting away to the ads before the true ad break (so you lose the last second of dialog). Also sometimes when it comes back from ads, the picture is zoomed in (like you are only seeing a quarter of the screen). If you exit out and resume, it fixes itself but that is a pain. Don't know if it is a Roku issue or a Hulu issue. Thanks.

Re: Hulu -- News and Notable New additions

I'd try uninstalling and reinstalling the app to ensure it's using the latest version. But odds are it's a Hulu software issue on that particular Roku, or it's a bug in the Roku Dev Kit.

The only time I ever have an issue with YouTube TV is when it's returning from those inserted commercials they run, hate those things.

Just recently noticed that some content now has 5.1 sound on our Roku 3. As well some content has not only 5.1 sound but also 4K on our 2016 LG TV running OS 3.3.4-3719. This is not just HULU exclusive titles.

Can you give an example of a title in 4K and how can you tell?

Re: Hulu -- News and Notable New additions

Something weird happened while watching Hulu last night. I'm not sure how this happened, but one of their ad overlays that usually only shows while the app is paused, was showing while I was watching a show! I THINK it was just a bug, because it went away when I paused/unpaused it. Sure hope this isn't a sign of things to come though!
Spoiler:

I get the ad countdown timer sometimes during a show if I ff or rw past a commercial break.

I took some pictures to share yet the upload tool stops at 50% and then tells me the image can't be uploaded. This has been happening in DVD Talk for a few weeks now.

Re: Hulu -- News and Notable New additions

Great thank you. I see the 4K icon now on multiple titles. Must have been added with the most recent rededign of the interface. I assume that if it shows 4K that means it will play in 4K? I don't know anyway to tell what the content is playing as there is no HDR or DV flag like in Netflix and Prime and I dont know how to show stats for Hulu if that is even possible.

Thanks again for the confirmation.

Re: Hulu -- News and Notable New additions

Looked on one of my Ultra’s and it didn’t have the 4K flag. I checked and there was an update for Hulu. Now I’m getting the 4K flags, at least for this movie. I’ll have to see what else there is.

If you see the 4K logo, that means your TV will display it that way. I’m not sure if you can tell if it’s HDR or DV. Like other services, you should see the HDR or DV flag pop up at the beginning.

Re: Hulu -- News and Notable New additions

I think I read that Hulu was only doing 4K but no HDR or DV but I could be wrong. If they are then I can confirm I checked about 10 different titles and none popped the flag.

They're 4K SDR, so don't expect HDR or Dolby Vision.

Re: Hulu -- News and Notable New additions

I always wish more apps would show a stat as to the resolution playing.

Amazon app used to do that and now it doesn't. It is fairly obvious when a title is SD. On our 55 w/o HDR or DV it can be a close tie when something is streaming 4K vs HD. And even sometimes a title could flip back to HD and still provide DV or HDR.

The Disney+ app on our 4K TV for for some reason only provides HD w/DV. Looks a bit better than the HD picture from our Roku 3 but not much.

Back to HULU it would be nice if they offered more content in 4K as well as 5.1. And I am glad they are starting to provide it in the updated app. Hopefully they will eventually expand the content and provide HDR and/or DV in the future.

Re: Hulu -- News and Notable New additions

I hate the new, updated Hulu app. Not sure if it’s different for each streaming device, but I have a Firestick.

The most annoying change - when I browse TV shows (for example), it makes you browse by moving the cursor horizontally only, in a single row. Before, the list of shows were displayed in a grid pattern, so you could see lots of shows at once.

Same for Roku 3 and LG TV and we dislike it as well. Even if it is consistent with many other apps (Netflix, Amazon, etc)

I hate the horizontal scrolling on Netflix as well. I usually end up going to the search function, and browsing via the grid pattern display.
