Re: Hulu -- News and Notable New additions

We just have Netflix and going to start up prime again this month. Going to get something like the Roku Ultra this BF.
Still going to look at Hulu but I let the other family members decide ,as they watch more streaming tv.
Here is a link to price increase in the news

Disney says they had to raise the price of Hulu Live in order to make a profit.

Of course they have to. No business wants to operate in the red.

How did I miss the fact that Boston Legal was on both this and Amazon Prime now.

Re: Hulu -- News and Notable New additions

Just a reminder that Black Friday last year was 11/23, so if you signed up for the 99c deal then, that's when your sub renews at 5.99 a month.

Apparently, some emails are going out offering a roku express if you reup and keep it for 3 months at the regular price, but it's two days out and I've seen nothing. I'm not keeping it for 5.99 a month, if anything I'll add it to my Disney+ sub later.

Hulu has a Black Friday sale for new and eligible customers.

$1.99/month for 12 months. It's for the ad supported version.

Perfect. Did same last year. Will sub again.

Edit: looks like you can't get deal if you have been a subscriber in past year. Booo

Re: Hulu -- News and Notable New additions

Any idea if I can pay the 12 months upfront? I’m looking and not seeing anything (which I assume means no).

I’m not big on paying a million little monthly charges. That is what has saved Amazon Prime in my House so far — one payment and done for a year. Loved the Disney deal because of one payment and done for three years!

Netflix would be on the chopping block, but the kids use it quite a bit.

Re: Hulu -- News and Notable New additions

Thank you DJariya!

Since the details of mixing th bundle with the D23 deal on Disney+ seemed to remain murky (I haven’t looked in a while though), I will probably bite on this. $2/month is less than renting a movie and I see a few movies on there I’ve been wanting to see.

Re: Hulu -- News and Notable New additions

I ended up just canceling the bundle and doing Disney(6.99) and Hulu deal for 1.99 month separate. I lose Espn plus but I was never really gonna watch it anyway and I save $4 month

Re: Hulu -- News and Notable New additions

Now that last year's amazing Hulu promo is over, I'm contemplating upgrading to the ad-free version ($11.99) but it's been frustrating trying to figure out if it's worth it over the ad-supported ($5.99). There's a few series we're enjoying (Handmaid's, Castle Rock, The Act, Reprisal etc.) but we don't watch most of their ancillary content besides a few nostalgia (80's/90's) shows occasionally since we have Dish. Ad-supported isn't a huge inconvenience but still somewhat annoying when you can't "skip" like a DVR (first world problem, right?).

I'd feel much more comfortable at a $9.99 price point but, lol, that's not up to me....

Note: We pay for Amazon Prime each year but not Netflix (T-mobile) and the only anticipated new streaming service we're contemplating adding next year is either HBO Max or Apple. Disney/Quibi/CBS/NBC don't interest us much.

Should I just dive in and upgrade?

Re: Hulu -- News and Notable New additions

I agree. Maybe $7.99 or $9.99. but double the price. It all comes down to what we think the about 5-10 min per hour of watching are worth getting back. So far we haven't felt the desire to double our costs.

Well for me, it is worth it any time I can rid myself of commercials. However be aware that there are a lot of programs that still have commercials even with the ad-free version. But it will cost you a Chik-fil-a sandwich meal to get Hulu without commercials. Of course if you do not like it, you can switch back to $5.99 the next month.

Re: Hulu -- News and Notable New additions

I dunno, I'm coming off the 99c year (they added one month when I cancelled) and .99 to 11.99 is a pretty steep jump for something I rarely prioritized. I'll probably just cancel for a year (which is the only way to get back into their promotions) unless Disney fastracks moving stuff onto it.

I have never seen a commercial on ad-free hulu besides the 5 second opening that tells you what channel and time the show comes on.

There are most definitely not "a lot of programs" that still have commercials in the ad-free version. There are probably a handful out of the thousands of shows they offer. I've had the ad- free version since the beginning and in the hundreds of shows we've watched in those years New Girl is the only one that had an ad at the beginning because of a licensing deal.

Yeah, I've never had an ad in the ad-free version. I must be watching the right/wrong shows.

Re: Hulu -- News and Notable New additions

The only one I remember is Agents of Shield (I think), it has a message that due to streaming rights(?) it is not included in the ad-free. But it's always an ad for the show. I think I got one for another show too.

New Girl was another show that had that message with an ad in the beginning and at the end.

Also shows with ads include Grey's Anatomy, Young Sheldon, and Project Runway. Those are just a few more off the top of my head.

Rich,
You bring up an interesting point that I did not think of. I have HULU w/ Live TV. I have Young Sheldon in "TV Shows" area as well in my "Manage DVR" area of Hulu. I watch it via "TV Shows" which has commercials just like the "Manage DVR" area. I bet what is happening is that shows that are normally on HULU standard are without commercials in the "TV Shows" area while those shows that you can only get via Live TV are with commercials. Very interesting.

So I recant what I said earlier. I cannot reliably tell you what shows are on standard Hulu as opposed to Live TV Hulu.

Now my question. I was thinking of changing my subscription of Hulu to Hulu standard once the football season is over. Where can I find out what shows I will lose once I cancel Live TV?
