Looks like the Cuties controversy crushed Netflix last quarter. < /s>
https://www.cnbc.com/2021/01/19/netf...-earnings.html
Summarized: They're almost cash flow positive with $8 billion on hand and $15b in debt and are no longer reliant on external financing. They intend to increase debt payments and are considering a shareholder payback and stock buyback. They added 8.5 million subscribers worldwide in the last quarter, 2 million more than anticipated and are at over 200m subscribers worldwide. Tthey're up 11% in after hours (+$55/share). They added a total of 6.274m subscribers in the US/CAD in 2020, that's compared to 2.9m in 2019.
The US also pays the most per member @ $13.32, compared to Europe/Mid-East/Africa at $10.72, Latin America at $7.45 and Asia-Pacific at $9.12. They will be pulling $1b/month in the US alone in the coming months.

Re: Netflix - News & Discussion
After reading about Rectify leaving on the 4th I checked it out. Binged Seasons 1 and 2 yesterday. Will probably finish it up tomorrow. Luckily its a short series (30 Episodes)
if you have time I highly recommend checking it out before it leaves.
I really wish Netflix made it easier to see when a show is leaving the service. Only reason I found out about Rectified was through a third party site. Maybe a section for "Leaving Soon".

They are testing a feature that would stop password sharing:

I could've sworn they tested this before, but maybe I'm thinking of a different service.
Expect a lot of texts from grandma if this happens, I guess.

Netflix is testing a new feature that could signal the start of an effort to crack down on password sharing.
Spotted by GammaWire, some viewers attempting to use somebody else's account are now being stopped by a screen that says, "If you don't live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep watching."
Netflix confirmed the new feature, which is getting a limited rollout at this time. "This test is designed to help ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorized to do so," a Netflix spokesperson said.
In order to continue watching, the viewer is given the option of either verifying their identity (with a texted or emailed code to the account's owner), or opting to "verify later," which gives the viewer an unspecified additional amount of time to continue watching and later confirm they are a valid account user.

Not surprising. They lose money when people password share.

Re: Netflix - News & Discussion
Sounds harmless right now at least if they are only requiring me to give my daughters their own verification code when requested. If they were to check IP or location info and block with that, then that would be bad. Spotify family account kind of has this "must reside in the same household" requirement also, but they don't seem to enforce it.

If they're identifying location, to determine whether people reside in the same household, does that mean they're also going to crack down on VPNs used for region swapping?

Re: Netflix - News & Discussion
It's just going to push a lot of people back to pirating. People account share for various reasons, a big one being a lack of money to subscribe to every one of the services.
My family does a thing where each person subscribes to one service and we share the accounts among everyone to have access.

I'd rather people password share even if they have to do it for financial reasons than someone use APKs and Torrents and illegal streams. It's better that they watch high quality legal streams. I always believe you should support the artists who make the movies and shows you like.
I know most middle to lower income families or people who are fairly young can't afford 3, 4, 5, 6 streaming services and pay all their bills.
and Netflix is slowly getting more expensive. I'm on their higher tier 4K UHD plan and it's already $18/month.
Here's one problem though: A couple of years ago, I allowed a friend from work to access my HBO account. Her device or computer got hacked and someone stole my password information and logged on to all my services and even tried to order NFL Sunday Ticket. I noticed various shows and movies that were being watched all the time and on one service I never gave access to her. So I had to go through a huge hassle to change my password and revoke access to her unfortunately.
Now I don't password share anymore. It's too risky.

I mean honestly I’m surprised it didn’t happen sooner. You have a few people sharing an account, and that happening over who knows how much of their subscriber base. They’re obviously losing out on a ton of potential subscription dollars.

Re: Netflix - News & Discussion
The 2 stream and 4 stream limit prevents an unlimited number of people sharing the account. When I had 2 stream, I had trouble some evenings with just my two daughters. With 4 streams, I am able let my mother have access to my account without any fear of hitting the limit. I wouldn't be able share it to 8 people, then I would suffer as the account owner not being able to view at peak times when the 4 stream limit is hit.

More people would likely cancel for lousy in house programming or price increase rather than lose the ability to sharing password.

I’m watching “Bad Trip” starring Eric Andre and it’s in the style of “Bad Grandpa” (Jackass) - half candid, half fictional plot.

The actors are recognizable though, so I’m surprised they got some usable footage.
