Re: Netflix - News & Discussion
Cancellations spiked for a week (8x more cancellations than normal for a couple days), most people agreed the controversy was overblown and most things resumed to normal (and the cancellation rate dropped back to normal) minus Texas.
They can still maintain the quality if they do it right. But that's a pretty big if.
Netflix cuts 4K bitrate in half, promises same quality 4K video.

Netflix is raising the subscription price to its standard and premium plans in the U.S., the first such hikes at the streaming giant since January 2019.
The service confirmed Thursday that it is raising the price of its HD Standard plan to $13.99 from $12.99, and its 4K Premium plan to $17.99 from $15 over the next two months. The prices take effect today for new members, with current subscribers to be notified 30 days ahead of their price increase based on their billing cycle.
The entry-level plan remains fixed at $8.99 per month.

At that price, I may cancel. Don't use it enough to justify $18+tax

And the nasty comments on other sites have already hit saying Netflix is tone deaf for the unemployed and broke during the pandemic.
10 to 15 years ago, people couldn’t wait to cancel cable, now people are canceling streaming services because there’s too many, can’t afford them or don’t use them enough.
It was only a matter of time before Netflix started pushing $20 per month considering the amount of debt they have and the amount of spending they’re making.

I don’t understand why they even bother offering the $8.99 / 480p plan. Couldn’t they just eliminate that and make the basic plan standard? Or just make two plans a basic with 1 stream 1080p for $11 or standard with 4 streams and 1080/4K for like $15.

The 8.99 plan allows them to advertise, well, an 8.99 plan. It also isn't going up so that pricepoint must be important to them.
I think if Disney+ had broader content (or if COVID hadn't destroyed the timeline of their original programming) and/or any of these other services actually gained traction, there would be pressure on Netflix to not raise prices. But they're scrambling and even with COVID Netflix had a ton of original programming in the queue. You'll see a lot of people justify it saying "it's only a buck" and "so worth it" and while it probably is worth it, that's exactly why they feel like they can milk a little more. That 15 dollar barrier is going to be difficult to overcome, though.

I’m more wondering who is stuck with 480p tech still? And let’s be real, most people are sharing accounts. Having only 1 simultaneous stream of Netflix seems like that’s not something people need.

I know you work in entertainment media but you don't always have to defend these companies. Here's a thought, invest in QUALITY programming, rather than half the shit Netflix has on there. They have every right to raise prices as a business. And I have every right to complain and cancel my service to put my money elsewhere when I don't think the value per cost is there anymore.

I think if you're single and only watching on a mobile device or a 14-inch laptop, then the cheap 480p 1-stream plan would be fine.

This Holidate movie on Netflix
I forgot how much I love Emma Roberts’ raunchy comedy. She was great in Scream Queens.

I had no idea that $9 plan was SD 480p.

Meanwhile they’re cutting the bitrate again, and continue to annoy serious viewers in the name of those with short attention spans.
Time for someone to start a cheap no-frills subscription service that only carries licensed content, nothing produced by the service itself which costs money.

Re: Netflix - News & Discussion
So yeah, it's not always a tech limitation but an internet connection limitation.
I'm on an unlimited data plan. But if I wanted to switch to a faster Satellite plan... it'd be limited to like 25GB of monthly data... which would entail going with 480p in order to not hit the data cap in like 3 movies.
Anyways it's moot for me as I don't pay for Netflix. Never have paid for any streaming service. Friends share their accounts with me for practically every service that has anything I want to watch.

Re: Netflix - News & Discussion
Not worth it for me. I just upgraded to the UHD plan to take advantage of my 4K TV and ATMOS sound system and for those limited Netflix produced shows that have this it's been great but that is probably only 10% of their content. I'll be either sharing an account with a relative or subscribing periodically to binge a show then cancelling again. Sorry Netflix, you will be losing money from me and I have been a continuous subscriber since the DVD by mail days.

Re: Netflix - News & Discussion
Yea, $18 a month is a bit ridiculous for what Netflix offers, and far from beyond worth it. I'll rejoin when Cobra Kai season 3 is out and binge some other stuff that I've missed, but then I'm right back out again.

The Walking Dead could be leaving Netflix as the streaming rights are expiring soon.
Fear is on Hulu and could move as well.

Re: Netflix - News & Discussion
For me, Netflix exists solely for their original programming. If I enjoy binging just one show per month, commercial free in beautiful Dolby Vision/Atmos, that's worth $18/mo. I'd spend more than that buying it on disc if it were even available. It's certainly better than the $150/mo satellite package I dropped.

Netflix has a sea of crap that you have to swim through to find something watchable
I wish they would have 3 seperate streaming services.
1.) old tv shows,documentaries and movies(Yes !!!)
2.) Netflix original programming(no thanks)
3.) combination of both
