Re: Cutting The Cord - Dropping Pay TV for Streaming
The MLB app has a Free Game Of The Day. You can watch it on the Roku or PS3. I don't know if it works on other devices. For some reason, I couldn't get the free game on my AppleTV. And I can't test the Xbox360, because XBL is down right now.
Yesterday's game was L.A. vs Toronto. Today's game is Philly vs St. Louis at 8:15PM EST. So check it out if you want to test the video/audio quality.

I accidentally learned last night that my Rapsberry Pi / XBMC setup offers native support for downloading of streams - or at least the Video Add-on I was using last night does. So rather than struggle through trying to watch a video that's coming from a server that has an iffy connection (buffering... buffering... ) I just downloaded the movie to my Pi.
Tonight - Sharknado.
Between having Netflix, HuluPlus and Amazon Prime streams on my Roku, and seemingly unlimited access to ripped TV shows and movies and getting live network feeds from PlayOn and NotPlayOn via XBMC, the cord is fraying!

I thought I had posted in here, but I've been cable free for years. The only thing I miss are a few live televised events like the Olympics, but if I really cared enough I could get an antenna for that.

I signed up with a cable provider in January to check it out again. My bill has already gone up once, their broadband (regular price) is almost 3x what I used to pay, and while I've recorded a bunch of movies, I could have just bought them on dvd for probably half one months' bill - if I wanted to. I do like having HD and DVR, but again, there's a bunch of stuff on there I'll never watch. I just got a blu ray player and am trying Amazon Prime/video, and there's more on there than there used to be, and a lot in HD. When my 12 month contract is up, I'm pulling the plug again.

My wife and I are talking about cutting the cord (or sledgehammering the satellite?). I'm sure I'll miss catching some shows live, but for the really essential stuff (Game of Thrones) we can always head over to her parents house.

why not save yourself the trip and download it for free somewhere? its not like you would be paying for it at her parents house either.

If he wanted to, he could even get her parents log-in and watch it on HBO Go.

Same here. I'm cutting it this weekend when my post-employment 50% off promo ends. Fuck a $160/mo. bill. Between Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and torrents I'm all good. Every time I turn on my cable box I'm reminded how worthless it is.
Riot, I recommend a Roku 3 unless you use a lot of Apple devices. The mirroring capabilities on Apple TV are an attractive feature if so.

Before you buy a device, you should check out if you're brother's cable/sat company is compatible with HBOGo. Comcast and DirectTV don't allow HBOGo on the Roku. You can find the compatibility info here:

Do you have a lot of media on your iPad and iPhone that you want to watch on your TV? Do you have a Mac or a PC as your main computer? If most of your media is on your computer, and it's not a Mac, I recommend the Roku over the Apple. You can use Plex to stream your media to your Roku. It's fantastic.

I love Plex, but one thing I haven't figured out is whether or not it can stream a TV show from online to my Roku. Once I'm cable-free, I'd like to stream shows from their respective sites if that's possible.

what are the major differences between the Roku LT and Roku HD? i have an old receiver so i need RCA outputs for audio which means the Roku 3 and Apple TV aren't looking like my best choices.

The Roku 2 HD can do video up to 1080p, whereas the LT and first-gen HD have a max output of 720p. Do you have other options for audio? I only ask because the Roku 3 has dual-band wireless and a faster processor, both of which I found to be big improvements over my previous Roku 2 HD's capabilities.

No clue on Plex or how to do so on Roku, but you can do what you want with a cheap Chromecast. I bought one on launch and it has been my favorite device of the sort in a long time. I use it every single day, it's amazing.

Zom-Bee TV
CrypticTV
FrightPix
Midnight Pulp
Drive-In Classics
Asian Crush
PopcornFlix
Crackle
And you can watch Synapse movies on Fandor. It's $10 a month, but they've got some great horror films.

So there's no way to legally stream in-market sports is there? That's the only thing holding me back from cutting the cord.

Hmm, just googled and it looks like Windows Media might be able to do the same to my 360. If only my console weren't borked.

Well, shit, my plans to cut the cord backfired when I called up Cox to say I was canceling unless they kept my bill at the current severely-reduced rate and they obliged. Good till Aug 2014 now.

I don't know about iTunes files. Apple may lock those down. Best to do some research before you purchase.
