There's an iTunes plug-in for Plex. I wasn't able to get it to work with my iTunes Digital Copies. But I only spent a few minutes with it, so maybe it works fine for everyone else.

A big benefit of the AppleTV is that it'll play iTunes Videos from the iCloud. So you don't have to download all those digital copies to your computer. Just redeem the codes and leave the movies in iCloud. Then stream them to your AppleTV.

Re: Cutting The Cord - Dropping Pay TV for Streaming

I have seriously been thinking of cutting the cord lately. My daughter (6) would hate it since she leaves her tv on Nick Jr. or Disney Jr. But Netflix has most of the Disney stuff she likes and I have a Prime account so I have to see what she can use from that (plus I need chromecast and amazon to work together)

I have already cancelled my HBO/Showtime/Starz package and save $43.99 (I can use my parents go account), I have the NFL covered but I am worried I am going to miss the MLB playoffs.

I have Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Couple of questions for the long time people in here:

I have a computer hooked to my living room tv. What should I be using to make my content watching the easiest it can be?

I have a chromecast hooked to my daughter's bedroom, and thaat will work well enough for her. What should I use for my bedroom?

Any other tips?

Thanks for the warning. Nothing is ever easy, I suppose.

Re: Cutting The Cord - Dropping Pay TV for Streaming

Fucking Time Warner. They sent me a letter with the envelope saying "Exciting new changes coming to your service".

Turns out they're raising my rate by $10 a month. They already decided to raise the rate of the cable modem rental by $5 a month.

Yeah, this cable thing needs to end. Netflix, Hulu Plus and Aereo solve most of my problems. For sports... I can go to local bars to watch games that I can't see.

Is there a way to get Redzone channel without having to pay for all of Sunday Ticket (which I can get on my PS3)? That would be clutch, even if I just got it on my computer.

Either way, I'm waiting until the end of Breaking Bad to cut the cord. It's a principal thing at this point.

Correct, and that is unlikely to change anytime soon. The local broadcast networks/cable pay big money for those rights. The big sports will likely keep that monopoly going until those networks lose a majority of the viewing audience. It could be another 10 years before we see enough viewer loss to streaming for a change in that business model.

Who still rents a modem? That has to be the biggest scam any cable company can offer.

Re: Cutting The Cord - Dropping Pay TV for Streaming

I've been entertaining an idea of setting up a website (or Facebook page?) to create a "cable D-day pledge". First write up a little manifesto about the cable companies and how they have WAY too much power, but then to remind everyone that they're actually at OUR mercy. There will be a set date like 11/11/14 when everyone (who's not under contract) pledges to cut their cable/satellite for at least 3 months. That should cut the cable companies income by at least half. Likely a lot of those people who leave will never come back either. We could REALLY fuck over the cable companies.

I've been doing that for more than 15 years. I honestly don't see any reason to have it nowadays, all the channels I cared about are either gone or shadows of their former selves.

They really should just call it payments. The only thing where it may be okay renting is when they need to be switched out.

TWC also sent me a letter about exciting changes, and it turned out to be a price hike. I noticed that the new price they were charging me was $4 less than the next tier of internet service, so I jumped up to that, then went to Amazon and bought my own modem and told them to stuff the rental charge.

Re: Cutting The Cord - Dropping Pay TV for Streaming

I decided to try out this XBMC device from Amazon. It's a little bigger than Roku/Apple TV running on a rooted Android 4.2.2 OS optimized for XBMC. Also, the device will accept over the air updates once it becomes available. I am still playing with the device but after some "Add-ons" (aka channels) were installed. I was able to watched any movies that are already released in the theatres and full seasons of tv shows. For example, I've watched Kick Ass 2 (the quality isnt' HD but its very watchable), Man of Tai Chai and others. However, there are "Add-ons" that offers HD movies. I tested out "Wall Street" in HD from icefilm - it played in 720P with 5.1 audio.. I tested out the Big Bang Theory and there were season 1-6 available and watched a few episodes. However, it wasn't in HD but it didn't have any commercials either. I know, Netflix is not offering Big Bang Theory yet and Amazon is charging $1.99 per episodes. I won't need Netflix or Amazon Prime now. I've played with XBMC on PC before but it can be a hassle but this device simplify some basic functions to get you up and running with limited setup. If you need more info, go check on Youtube. Having the remote control is great!

It's the best $100 bucks I've spent in awhile. Since, the OS is Android 4.2.2, you can login with your Google account and install any apps from the PLAY STORE?

Just to note, tread carefully on the topic as that device is very obviously using several piracy channels to provide content.

XBMC and the device itself are legit.

Re: Cutting The Cord - Dropping Pay TV for Streaming

I came across that device the other day on Amazon. Looked pretty awesome, then I am pretty sure I saw in one of the reviews that it's not capable of playing anything in 1080p even though it claims to..That would be a deal breaker if true.

Found it> http://www.amazon.com/review/R34RW0K...wasThisHelpful

Basically it can decode 1080p video but only outputs it at 720p. This is a XBMC for Android limitation..the internal player on the device can output 1080p, would have to be from a drive attached to the device not over a network I believe.

If you're looking for a device that will play pretty much any file, I just heard about this one: http://www.amazon.com/Arrival-KDLINK...network+player

Downgraded my cable package to the one just above the bare minimum and picked up Netflix and Hulu Plus. I'm liking it so far and I may just get the basic cable package once football season is over in January.

I'm curious about this as well. It's listed as "coming soon" in my area, but sounds intriguing.

Here is a review of Aereo from Dwight Silverman, a tech journalist who frequents Leo Laporte's Twit broadcast.

http://blog.seattlepi.com/techblog/2.../review-aereo/

If you do get aereo and have a Roku, you can manually add the Aereo channel to it.

I'd love for Aereo to come to LA.

Yea, that does sound pretty sweet. I'd fully tell my cable company to shove it in exchange for $8 a month full time.

I have to say as a Canadian, having Hulu Plus and the American Netflix is awesome even with commercials on Hulu Plus. I don't feel the need to purchase Blu-rays and DVDs especially TV season sets. My cable and Blu-ray spending is much less now.

Re: Cutting The Cord - Dropping Pay TV for Streaming

Finally cut the cord and canceled my cable and turned in my DVR to TWC today. My son already had a Roku XD in his room, but bought a Roku 3 for the living room at Target this afternoon.

Will miss college football Saturdays and NBA games on as background noise as I grade papers, but just couldn't justify spending $70 a month for that and the occasional "reality" show my son and I enjoy watching together. Between the load of unwatched blu-rays, my one disc at a time from Netflix, full seasons of Mad Men and Strike Back I need to catch up on, and a quickly growing pile of books on my nightstand, we should be okay without cable. (My first time in a decade without a DVR.)

Plus, three of my current faves (Shark Tank, Sleepy Hollow and New Girl) are on Hulu+.

Will catch delayed eps of Amazing Race, Survivor, Hawaii 5-0, Walking Dead, etc. online.

For any of the "big" games I'll just drive a couple of blocks to Buffalo Wild Wings.

NBA has a Roku channel. It's not available right now, but the Roku folks say it'll be up when the season starts.

Yeah, but Time Warner Cable Sportsnet, which broadcasts the Lakers and FOX Sports Prime Ticket, which broadcasts the Clippers are both blacked on out it (I see he's from the LA are). NBA League Pass is only good for out of market games.

That's great news. Thanks for the tip.

I'm okay with not getting the Lakers. In fact, it might be fun to watch the Rockets implode this year.
