Yeah, a door knock or ring should not be too much to expect. I'm not asking them to stand there to make sure I have picked up the parcel, unless it's one that needs to be signed for. I have also been fortunate to have never had a package stolen by a porch pirate, even though packages have sat on the porch for hours many-a-time.
Just a few years ago - fewer than ten years, certainly - Canada Post drivers would bring larger parcels back to the depot if the recipient didn't answer the door. Now they don't even do the very basics. We have a large mail slot. Most books or DVDs/Blu-rays I order can fit through it easily, but most of the time they don't bother. "Throw and go" seems to be the motto.

Usually they take a picture of the package, once it's been dropped off. When you see the picture, you have a chance to comment on it.

If they leave it out in the open, I comment that they should put it out of sight. We have a front porch with a low brick wall, so it's easy enough to place it behind the wall, so that it's out of sight from anyone walking by.

Yesterday they dropped off a package and left it right in the gap where you would step up onto the porch. I.e. really obvious to someone walking by. No knock, or doorbell, of course. I was hoping to comment on the picture, mentioning this, but there is no picture. They noted the delivery as "Package was handed to resident," an outright lie.

It would be hilarious but they should take a picture of the resident holding the package.

Exactly! Ring the bell and walk away. That's all I ask.

Yes, I remember the days, of the pickup notices, all too well. As time went by, they more often meant you had customs charges to pay. They often wouldn't even have the package with them, only the notice.

Regarding the throw and go, we have a motion sensing camera in our front window. It caught a Canada Post guy delivering a package, last Sunday (yeah, Sunday?). He certainly did throw it onto the porch, and you can hear it crash. Fortunately it was a mattress cover, so couldn't be damaged from the obvious carelessness. He also parked right in the street, on the wrong side of the road, while he made the delivery.

As they obviously didn't, that's one of my main concerns... What if it 'had' been stolen? Would Amazon try to absolve themselves, claiming they did hand it to me?

Thinking of cancelling Prime, as 2-day shipping has increasingly turned into 5+ day shipping. And just opting for the free shipping without Prime gets stuff to me in roughly the same time now.

I won't cancel mine, as I enjoy Prime Video, but yeah, 2-day shipping is often nonsense, now.

So many items are 'Prime Delivery' but not in two days. It's very frustrating when you see that it's not the shipping that takes the time... It's them actually sending the item, that takes all the time.

I.e. I could order today, and the item won't actually ship until Wednesday, then it'll get here in a day or two. I would guess that they prioritize paid shipping, over Prime.

I'm very glad you were diligent enough to get the package and all was well. Please take the time to call out Amazon on their abysmal and illegal practice. It might have been a "mistake" but it probably wasn't.

These types of bald-faced lies are why I went through the hoops to make sure to check the option to NOT take a picture of any packages left in my doorstep. 99% of people probably didn't bother to take the time to figure out how to check that option deep inside the "My account" settings at Amazon. And Amazon knows -- and exploits that fact to their distinct advantage.

So, you take power out of Amazon's hands -- lying and complicitness -- and put it back into your OWN hands where it belongs. And you've thereby eliminated a needless worry and invasion of your privacy.

I've never had any package stolen by a porch pirate that I know of, but I'm not going to tempt fate any more than I have to.

I have to admit the last couple of Amazon orders, although delayed a day or so in actually getting packed, have arrived timely via USPS. Most of the stuff I order seems to originate in Phoenix, AZ and the latest seems to have originated in Tucson to Phoenix. I wonder what will happen when the Amazon warehouse being built here in Albuquerque will do to deliveries. In other words are specific warehouses designed for types of products or most of everything in every warehouse? Heck, I might even experience "same day" delivery or some drone drop off! :)

I used the free trial of Prime, and it took more than two days each time to get the few things I ordered. Then I placed an order last Saturday (after my trial had ended and I didn't renew) and got it Monday.

Ordered seven CDs yesterday which all showed next day delivery. Amazon broke the seven CD order into five different shipments and I only received one.

Uhm...what the fuck?
Amazon kept $62 million in tips intended for drivers, FTC says

Amazon needs to pay back nearly $62 million in drivers' tips that it skimmed over the years, federal regulators said Tuesday. The Federal Trade Commission unveiled a complaint against the ecommerce giant on Tuesday alleging that Amazon's Flex program stole nearly $62 million in tips from its army of drivers between 2016 and 2019.
"Rather than passing along 100 percent of customers' tips to drivers, as it had promised to do, Amazon used the money itself," Daniel Kaufman, acting director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection, said in a statement.

News of the settlement comes as Amazon founder Jeff Bezos said he was stepping down as CEO, capping off a year of meteoric growth for the ecommerce company.

The only thing I can think of is Whole Foods orders. That lets you tip the driver when you order.

They have to stop when they deliver. I always try to meet the driver to have my package handed to me instead of it at the mercy of porch pirates.

Do you keep a hawk's eye on the app to know when it's happening? Amazon never knocks or rings the bell when they deliver.

I think this is for fresh and the other "special" Amazon deliveries for stuff like groceries. And the tip is able to be put into the app, so it's not like Amazon can claim ignorance on this at all.

This was a bit of a joke that clearly didn't land. Yes, obviously they have to stop to make a delivery, it just seems like they barely stop.

When it's close a map pops up saying how many stops it has to go and shows where the package is. When it's says "one stop before your house" or "You are the next stop" is when I head outside. Sometimes it's an Amazon truck and sometimes it's just a regular car with just small packages. I could probably tip the driver but I don't have a regular driver, if that exists.

The tipping is only for the vendors in the PRIME NOW App. Not the general driver that drops off a package.

One of the things I would like to see Amazon change about its website is to earmark customer reviews to different versions of the same product. This applies to movies, but probably also to books and other items. For example, I would like to know exactly which DVD or Blu-ray a person is reviewing. As it stands, all reviews are thrown into the same pile under a title.

This has been happening for a long time, whenever I only ordered one or two (or three) cd/dvd/bluray titles.

The only times I ever had cds/dvds/blurays shipped in a box, was when I ordered a lot of discs all at once. Typically over 5 or 6 (or more) titles shipped in the same package.

I don't usually have a problem with mailers, but the ones Amazon uses are eco-unfriendly in that they have to go into the garbage (paper with bubble wrap insert), which I don't like. The other day I received a book that had been handled roughly and had sustained a fairly substantial indent on its bottom near the spine. I should have returned it, but I used a sharpie to colour over the visible damage, and called it a day.

I’m not sure what kind of mailers you are used to getting from Amazon, but pretty much every single one I receive from them is the blue and white tyvex variety, which are recyclable. I take them to the plastic bag recycling bins at Walmart, which I believe is what is recommended on the outside of the envelope. I can’t remember the last time that Amazon sent me packaging that couldn’t be recycled.

For products sold by Amazon rather than 3rd party? I've also only received the blue/white mailers for a while now, even when it's a single movie/game.

Yes. I typically receive the above mailer, or a box. I'm not sure that I've ever received the blue and white mailer from Amazon.

I recently ordered an audiobook cd from amazon, which turned out to be a 12+ discs set. (It cost less than the paper book).

(Initially I didn't know it was this many discs. Originally I was expecting it to only be a 1 or 2 disc cd set).

It came in a typical mailer, and not a box.

Same here, though I actually got a blue-and-white one the other day, but I don't know if even they are recyclable here. Bubble wrap is one of the few things one can't recycle here in T.O., along with any black plastic-confused-, tin foil, and plastic wrap. There are a few other odds and ends that are not allowed, but I would say I/we recycle at least 90% of what we throw away. What happens to it after that, I don't know.

The disc cases are more susceptible to damage if they throw those packages and they land on the cement.

I told them in the delivery instructions to leave them inside the mailbox but 90% of the time they don;'t do that.

Only US Mail is allowed in a mailbox. Amazon folks should NOT be putting packages in there.

Yes, it is illegal to leave things in a mailbox if you're not a postman. So UPS, FedEx, and Amazon's "gig" couriers can't leave things in your mailbox. You also can't walk up to someone's house and leave a birthday card in their mailbox.

Hey, is it also "illegal" to drop off things in a mail slot (eg, built into the front door) if you're not a postman?? As in, you don't have a traditional mail box. In the stupid and foolish things dept, WHY THE HELL DOES IT MATTER??

Mail slots in residential doors are not covered under postal policy or the statute, because they provide direct access into the home itself.

Anything that is left by someone else for delivery can be picked a mail carrier and required postage be paid for its return.

Not really a complaint but I ordered three items from Amazon late last week. Two showed Sunday delivery and one on Monday (today). I was given the option to have them all show up Today so i selected that. Nope, two items, in separate packages, showed up via USPs Sunday afternoon. I felt like a celebrity having my own personal Mail truck deliver my goodies! ;) I have to admit this may have been the first time I've had delivery on a Sunday.
