it appears I've had the exact opposite reaction to my best buy return this year! I took 4 sealed blu ray dvds to my local friendly best buy... 2 of them had best buy stickers on them, the others did not... I was asked for a receipt - told them it was a gift and I didn't have it... they didn't blink - told me they had to give me the lowest sale price in the last 30 days and it would have to go back on a store credit gift card... they scanned the items - scanned the gift card - and handed me the card & receipt... didn't ask for my name - didn't ask to see drivers license... in & out of the store with nearly $150.00 in store credit in under 5 minutes...

Why doesn't anyone get gift receipts?

Oh well, it's off to the DVD exchange forum.
Blade Runner BD has been re-released in a newer, smaller case...so its possible the UPC # has changed.

if someone gives me a gift receipt, that's great... but I HATE asking for one from the giver... that let's them know I'm going to return it (for whatever reason)... I'd much rather them think I didn't already have it or it was something I really wanted than chance hurting their feelings that they got me something I didn't want or already had!

Does anyone actually use those things?
THe one time I tried to use them, the store printed out one gift receipt for about 8 items. I asked for 8 gift receipts, they told me that they couldn't reprint gift receipts and all I could get was the one. I could have returned everything and bought one item at a time, but I didn't want to take the time. Ever since then I haven't bothered with gift receipts.

Did a receiptless return today at best buy. All they wanted was my phone number and address. Which I had no problem giving.

I had received the 2 disc versions of Iron Man and Indy 4 as gifts. I already own 2 versions these films on Blu Ray and also the best buy boxsets. So it was an "oh great" moment when I received the dvds during a huge family get together when we took part in secret Santa. The best buy stickers where still on the dvd cases, just with the price marked out with a
sharpie. I got 22.99 a piece back in gift cards, no hassle.

WOW!! Congrats to you!! I had half the luck you had when I returned some DVD's without a receipt at Best Buy yesterday. BB took them back but I wasn't given the $$ on a gift card. I had to go and exchange them for something else in the store right that minute.

I guess I can't complain. At least they took them back without a receipt, unlike the past few years.

Best Buy receiptless returns are at the store manager's discretion. In theory, if one store doesn't want to help you, another one might. I have friends who took things back last week without a problem, save the long line waits, while I stood around at my local store for 40 minutes only for them to turn me away once I got up to the counter.

As others have said, Borders should take it back if their particular store -- or another local Borders -- have sold one in the last few months.

I've heard Wal-Mart caps receiptless returns to a maximum of $50. So if you have a game or something that costs $69, they will turn you away. I don't know if they waive this for the post-Holiday period, though.

Borders changed their return policy. They don't take stuff back w/o a receipt anymore.

Policies are policies in most cases, but many times we are all unfortunately subject to the attitude of the employee behind the counter doing the return. Often making up the rules and store policies from one customer to another. My advice is to return things first thing in the morning when they haven't been pissed off by everyone throughout the day.

Re: Returns without Receipt - Holiday 08

I had a sealed PS3 Eye laying around that I meant to use with LittleBigPlanet, but I didn't really care for the game so I never opened it.

Took it back to Walmart w/o receipt with no issue. They almost gave me cash until the supervisor stopped the CS and redid it as a gift card, which was fine with me anyway.
