From: Tennessee (but don't hold that against me)
I just made a receiptless return to borders... 3 blu ray dvds... all sealed... and 2 of them had borders stickers on them... at first the clerk told me she could do nothing without a receipt... I asked about just an exchange for other titles and she said ok... I went thru the store and found a few titles I wanted & took them back to the counter... she still let me do the exchange but her rules changed slightly - she would no longer let me return the one that didn't have a borders sticker on it (even though it was a title they stocked and had in stock at the time)...

she also said that today was the last day to make returns like this (and I have no idea what she was talking about when she said that)

I was not trying to scam them -- or do you assume that anyone returning anything without a receipt after Christmas is a scammer? Your attempt to defend the honor of a big-box retail chain is really admirable, but please spare me your baseless accusations.
My use of the term "pricks this year" was supposed to be somewhat humorous, quoting a person a few posts above me. Thus the quotation marks.
And yes, Xbox69, I did not see the earlier thread on the topic of this policy change, but in any case I think a mention of the change in this thread is useful.

I think many of knew about the change in return policy Borders made in September, but thought they might relax it for the Christmas season as many retailers do. So the fact that they apparently aren't is still "news" and is relevant.

Reading posts at a Borders employees board, it seems that if you whine to the cashier and ask to speak to the manager, you'll get your gift card. The cashiers(booksellers) seem to be hardcore about not coughing up a gift card, but the managers cave in. It's up to the individual if they want to cause a scene in a crowded store.

Anyone have any experience with returning Xbox 360 consoles without a receipt to WalMart? Just wondering if there's any sort of special clause or anything. I definitely bought it there, so I guess if all else fails I could possibly persuade them to look up the transaction.

They scan the serial number when you buy it, so they may be able to look it up, but hardware has a lower number of days to return than general merchandise, so you better have bought it recently.

Not always the case. Last time I tried to return something there without a receipt they looked it up in their system and said they hadnt sold any of that sku in the past 90 days, and refused the return on that basis.

That's only for computer hardware.

I was under the impression that anything that was setup in package with a way to see the serial number, or had a barcode of the serial on the packaging was scanned. This meant computers, consoles, televisions, mp3 players etc.

Thats what I remember. Any time I checked out a console at the register I had to scan the bar code also, otherwise no sale.

I meant the less time to return thing. Video games don't count as computer hardware, and thus have the full 90 day return policy.

Amazing. They can do all that with a computer but if I ask for some help locating an item I have to find the one employee in the store that understands my crazy English language

Yeah, I could tell they were feeding me a line, but I went with it, as I was relatively sure that the item didnt actually come from a walmart, even though this particular walmart was the only store in the area that actually had the item in stock. Figured it was my best bet.

Yes, video games dont count as hardware, but the return period for those is indeed 90 days, but they must be returned unopened.
As for what you were originally talking about, hardware, they do indeed scan the serial for that. So the serials would have to match for you to return those with a receipt.

Oh my. I think that my poor phrasing has doomed us all.

To clarify once and for all: I have an Xbox 360 that I bought from Walmart, but I've lost the receipt. I was just wondering if anyone knew if I would have any trouble returning it for store credit. Video game consoles can normally be returned within 90 days, no matter if they've been opened or not. I am fully aware that they scan the barcode printed directly on the console for returns; since this identifies the exact console, I hope that they will be able to look up my purchase for me, if needed.

My aunt gave me a copy of The Dark Knight on fs dvd and I already had the steelbook, so I took it back to wal-mart. I got $21.xx in store credit and picked up a couple movies.

Did I have a receipt? no.
Do I know it came from wal-mart? no.
Did I scam wal-mart? maybe
Do I care? no.
Did wal-mart care? no

Tried to return a Blade Runner 5 disc BD set to Best Buy. They didn't have a problem with no-receipt, but said that they couldn't accept it because it was "phased out" from their system. Funny, they still have the exact same BD in stock.

Oh well, it's off to the DVD exchange forum.

Ive gotten that same response before. When asked why they still have it on the shelf and are actively trying to sell it, they have no response.
