Re: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II (Yates, 2011) — The Reviews Thread

an excellent finale, despite the audible, collective, dread-filled groan heard throughout my screening as the epilogue title card flashed up.

Re: TIME magazine 25 best animated features of all-time

No Brad Bird, period — no Iron Giant, Incredibles, or Ratatouille, that is — just blows my mind.

Re: Your top movie past 10 years?

There Will Be Blood is a bona-fide, go-down-in-history Masterpiece.

Re: The 83rd Academy Awards — 2011 Awards Show Discussion.

you're forgetting the historic dark knight-slumdog split of the sound categories in 08/09.

Re: The 83rd Academy Awards — 2011 Awards Show Discussion.

There's also that part of acting where the actors don't say any lines. Generally, in conversation scenes, they are about half the overall time.

Re: The 83rd Academy Awards — 2011 Awards Show Discussion.

I don't think Melissa Leo will win. a) Amy Adams deserves it far more, as does Hailee Steinfeld, and b) she had a meltdown with the self campaign. Helena Bonham Carter is quickly rising in favour.

Re: The 83rd Academy Awards — 2011 Awards Show Discussion.

That'll be the most anticipated element of the show -- hopefully enough voters would be curious enough about what'd happen if Banksy won to vote for Exit for Documentary -- and we can have ourselves...

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

A last look at how things stand. I don't know why but I am getting an inkling that The Social Network might upset for the big prize – even though I'm too much of a pussy to call it. My personal picks...

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

For my money Jesse Eisenberg gave the most subtly complex performance of the bunch. But Franco is also very good, and much as I love him Bridges should perhaps be replaced by someone like Dorff in...

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

The Social Network picked up both the ACE, as Mr. Cinema mentioned, and the MPSE guilds this weekend.

What do you guys think about those wins, along with this far too one-the-nose new trailer...

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

Cinematography is my favourite category at the Oscars. I just love the craft. And few lineups would beat 2007's immense group of nominees: Roger Deakins with the No Country-Jesse James double, Robert...

Re: The BAFTA nominations

Adapted from Characters originally written for Toy Story 1. Toy Story 2 would also have been considered an Adapted Screenplay. The same goes for any sequel.

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

Aaron Sorkin's run has probably been the most comprehensive in my time keeping tabs on these things. Heath Ledger was in the same league in 2008/09, though he, Waltz, and Bardem for No Country had...

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

May as well throw up a list of predictions for Sunday's BAFTAs:

Film – The King's Speech
British Film – Another Year
Director – Christopher Nolan
Actor – Colin Firth
Actress – Annette Bening...

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

I think we can assume, rightly, that the only other guild The Social Network can win is ACE (editing). Still, WGA and ACE are two of the bigger ones. The King's Speech will have costume design in the...

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

remember, not only are the academy 6000-strong and mostly over 50, they are also nearly a third British. It's no surprise The King's Speech received the most nominations, and it'll sweep the BAFTAs...

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

+1. If I were handing it out Directing would go to Aronofsky, but it should really be between Aronofsky and Fincher and, well, Nolan, but we won't go there.

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

Tom Hooper just won the DGA award over David Fincher, who alongside Bale and Sorkin has up til now dominated his category. I think we need to all start resigning ourselves to a King's Speech sweep...
