Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions
I'm 99.9% sure The King's Speech wins Picture. I won't say 100% since Apollo 13 did win the PGA, DGA, and the SAG, but lost Picture. Brokeback Mountain won the PGA, DGA, and WGA, but also lost BP. Little Miss Sunshine won the PGA, SAG, and WGA, and lost BP. So I do hold out that little speckle of hope. But assuming The King's Speech wins the WGA, I'm not sure any film that won all 4 major guilds lost BP.
However, the bigger tragedy may be Hooper taking Fincher's Director Oscar. I'd be more bothered by that happening vs The Social Network losing BP. There's a huge amount of great films that never won the Oscar. Oliver! is a Best Picture winner, but Citizen Kane isn't.

In terms of King's Speech, I won't say I liked it more than Social Network, but I can definitely understand how it has taken the lead after seeing it yesterday. It is a very inspirational movie, and unlike TSN, it's characters are people you can get behind and support, whereas the ones in TSN were mostly douchebags.
In terms of Best Actress, does anyone else think Natalie Portman winning the SAG means she's a lock? The only way I see Bening winning at this point is if the academy is dead set on giving her a lifetime achievement Oscar. Of course there is the off chance that she and Portman split the ballot and it goes to Jennifer Lawrence.

Re: Best Supporting Actress, after seeing the excellent True Grit yesterday I'd have to say Hailee Steinfeld will take it. It might go to Melissa Leo, but this category loves the novices (Jennifer Hudson, Anna Paquin, Marisa Tomei to name a few) and Steinfeld truly is amazing in this movie, she holds the screen from the word go and tackles the Coen's tricky dialogue with ease.

I'm still shocked that Jesse Eisenberg got a nod for that movie, but not Andrew Garfield.

As for the Supporting Actress race, I liked Hailee quite a bit - category placement be damned - and Melissa Leo deserves the recognition she's been getting, but the frontrunner of this award really should be Jacki Weaver.

I have to disagree with that. I think it's because I saw Animal Kingdom advertised in theaters praising Weaver's performance (before I saw the movie), and while I liked her in it, I was a little underwhelmed at the same time.
Steinfeld carried True Grit. Melissa Leo was excellent in The Fighter. Amy Adams was very good in The Fighter though not given the chance to chew the scenary (in a good way) as Leo is. Helena B. Carter was very good in King's Speech but didn't stand out at all really, I think she sort of caught the nomination wave with Rush and Firth since she definitely didn't detract.
Not sure who I'd want to win, but I do think Leo will get it.
I will be irritated as hell if Hooper wins Best Director, the rest of the categories I don't care so much about (Though I would like to see Bale get recognition for The Fighter. Which is most likely unless King's Speech has enough momentum to put Rush over the top.)
Best Animated is going to Toy Story 3, that's a given, the rest of the categories could go either way but I do think a clean sweep for King's Speech is coming. I just hope I'm wrong.

Animal Kingdom is very good, but really Weaver's role is a bit of a "twist" gimmick, which was very effective, but as RichC2 said, Steinfeld carried the entire movie, and I just have a feeling she'll take it -- could be wrong though.

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions
The Social Network finally won a Guild award as Sorkin won the WGA for Adapted Screenplay. Chris Nolan won for Original. The King's Speech wasn't eligible, so it could still win on Oscar night. Glad to see Nolan get rewarded though.

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions
I think we can assume, rightly, that the only other guild The Social Network can win is ACE (editing). Still, WGA and ACE are two of the bigger ones. The King's Speech will have costume design in the bag (though there are split categories), while the Cinematography and Sound guilds will opt for more showier titles like Black Swan and Inception.
