Re: favorite road films?
Lots of fine choices, but for me the definitive road movie has to be Sideways. Every time I see it, I live vicariously through Miles and Jack. I feel some shame for it, of course, but then I get over that and just enjoy myself. The landscapes are gorgeous, and every time I see them in the car (especially that one shot with multiple panels showing different angles of their drive) I feel the sensation of being on one of my own assorted road trips over the years.
Another that I've seen recently that I enjoyed quite a lot and that I thought did a terrific job recreating the experience of a road trip was Blue State with Breckin Meyer and Anna Paquin. Many will find it predictable, contrived and entirely too political, but I enjoyed the actual depiction of their drive. $5 a Day is also pretty predictable, but I thought it, too, did a fine job showing an actual road trip. Both can be streamed from Netflix (last I knew, anyway).

Re: favorite road films?
So, we've had some nasty weather tonight and decided to watch Twister when things calmed down for a bit. I hadn't even considered it as a road movie, but they spend the majority of the time driving around so I suppose one could make a case for it. It's flawed and the story is somewhat thin and contrived, but I enjoy the characters and it's great fun. Who wouldn't want to chase tornadoes across the Midwest with Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton and Philip Seymour Hoffman?
