Got a new sub, how do I set it up?

I just recieved a new KLH 120W sub for X-Mas. On the back are 2 knobs, one for "Frequency" and one for "Gain." The Frequency knob goes from 40Hz to 180Hz.

What do these do and about where should...

I think this is a good idea. Just like NBC with Schindler's List. Editting takes away from the horror and I'm glad the studio heads realize this. Or it could be a marketing ploy.
