No, Cowboy is a right answer. As Wiki says, "the historic American cowboy of the late 19th century became a figure of special significance and legend."

Would anyone ever think a cowboy was anything but American?

By wiki's definition, then the Washington Redskins are a right answer.

I'd say YES reluctantly to this Revolution and NO to the Cowboys. There was never a Cowboy anywhere in this neck of the woods.

Cowboys may be american but so are 49ers, and all kinds of other things. I still say no to Cowboys.

No one answered Redskins, so we can sidestep that little problem.

I get the Yankee Doodle thing, but the origin of the word and its original usage aren't really patriotic. Nor has the usage over the past 100 years been.

Alright, alright.

So it looks like DC United, Cowboys, 49ers, Rangers, and Yankees are all thrown out?

Cowboys aren't uniquely american. Ever heard of gauchos?

Like I said, Cowboys are a Texas thing - their logo is a lone star.

as a southerner, i associate yankee with someone from the north. many associate it with someone who sided with the union during the civil war, that would make them patriotic.

I should have put padres and updated wikipedia to reflect that "the historic American padre of the late 19th century became a figure of special significance and legend."

I'm in agreement here. A Yankee is the same as A Cowboy to me. Regional references.

I still think that Yankees should be in as I think of it as a patriotic symbol (uncle sam anyway).

I think you should add 500 points to you score for using Wikipedia as a source.

Also, Canada has cowboys. Are you saying that the Montreal Alouettes would be a correct answer?

United is just a word, plus they stole their name from Manchester United, which is in what? United England? United Britain? What does that name even mean?

I don't see how the word "United" is more American than "Cowboy"... If cowboy goes, so does United.
