But with eBay I managed to snag a lot of rare and obscure heavy metal stuff I either never picked up the first time around, or could never find in stores. ("Perfect Man" by Rage, "Endless War" by Realm, in addition to a lot imports.) I've never owned the banned cover that Scorpions album; I don't think I'd even want to have it in my house. |
Re: The VINYL Thread!
^ Yeah, for sure. I have the original press with the banned cover as well (German RCA IIRC). I keep a solid inner sleeve between the jacket and outer poly sleeve so people don't necessarily see the front if flipping through the shelf.

Me neither, that's an album cover where you wonder what the fuck the record company was thinking. Man, the 1970s sure was a different time!

Honestly, guys, it wasn't my intention to open Pandora's box here (so to speak) ...

Re: The VINYL Thread!
If anyone is interested, the record store that acquired the sealed vinyl collection (Record Collectors Paradise) here in Edmonton is now accepting out-of-town and international orders by e-mail. The address is on their Facebook page. There were still a lot of albums left (including Sabbath, Maiden, and Motorhead) when I was there a couple of days ago, original and unopened. Here is a run-through from their youtube channel before they were made available to buy in-store last week (the Metal ones are near the end) ...
The same collector also had dozens of concert shirts as well ... Still shaking my head over this ... really quite a find when you think about it ... |
Re: The VINYL Thread!
Sent 'em an E-mail, we'll see what's still there. I could do a lot of damage, but I limited my request to like 6 records.
|
Re: The VINYL Thread!
BTW, I noticed most of the records had a price scribbled on with a marker, not a price tag. Is that what the store was charging? They seemed awfully low.

Don't think I've seen prices written directly on the shrinkwrap like that, though.

Re: The VINYL Thread!
Ok, he sent me a quote, and the marker prices are most definitely NOT the asking prices.
I'd inquired about six titles, four were available. I may only buy one: Voice of the Beehive - Let it Bee. Everything else was out of my price range. |
Re: The VINYL Thread!
Yeah, they are the original price tags / hype stickers from the time they were first bought. Most of the sealed ones that I bought last week were between $40-$60 CAD. The more popular ones are going to be higher (the Van Halen was $150). They have The Cure's Disintegration at $250 and most of the Motorhead are $100 & up, as well. Sabbath's S/T was $100 IIRC.
Which ones were you looking at, Paff? |
Re: The VINYL Thread!
I asked for a quote on the above-mentioned Voice of the Beehive record, and I caved and also asked for The Rolling Stones' Black and Blue, their strange attempt at going reggae (but Keith Richards' guitar is amazing on it). I passed on 20/20's Lookout, and the soundtrack to The Harder They Come. That was a real heartbreaker, a sealed 70s reggae classic, but $60 was a little too much for me. I'd also asked for a record I saw in the video by The Only Ones, and The Cult's Love, but neither were available by the time I emailed.

Re: The VINYL Thread!
So, after some wheeling and dealing, I went with the Stones record and I got the reggae soundtrack after all. Passed on VOTB, I found another sealed copy in the wild at a comparable price.
I'd also told a local friend about the discs, and to save on shipping he tacked on to my order two Bowie 12", the self-titled Crowded House, and a Bowie T-shirt. He also wanted Kate Bush's The Hounds of Love but those hosers wanted $150 for it. Can't wait to get 'em! |
Re: The VINYL Thread!
Nice! Hope you & your friend enjoy them ...

Re: The VINYL Thread!
Just cleaning a stack of albums while watching Empire Records right now (it felt appropriate ...). I'm putting together a corner of the living room for speakers & a turntable - with a new amplifier on the way - so I can put on some Jazz, some Floyd, or something else when I get home in the evenings and chill like Harry Bosch ... only without the cool view of L.A. out my front window. ;)

Re: The VINYL Thread!
Lol, Eddie's famous mixtape and brownies with lots of 'sugar'? No, just looking forward to playing my own albums in the living room (more space, can do other things while listening, etc.) than in the upstairs theatre room which is more confined. I'm moving my Audio-Technica LPW50PB turntable downstairs, setting up a pair of ELAC Debut 2.0 speakers in the corner (to be powered by an Arcam A15 amplifier that should be arriving in the next week) and then I'll be all set. Not super expensive by any means but a nice little setup for some vinyl ambiance ...

I wish I had known. I basically have Re-Animated Records in old La Mesa. I know there are more around North Park area but by the time I drive to these other places, they're already packed. Wish I knew about Folk Arts.
Now that record is in the $100 range. Most people go to flip which is sad on such limited stuff. But that's the game so what can ya do... Anyway, next time I got a Saturday free I'm really gonna go through the stacks. But at least you now have TWO shops you can hit up on a record store run. |

Re: The VINYL Thread!
Hey, now you're stereotypin' ...
I was just talking to Ty a few days ago about a vintage McIntosh MA6100 amplifier that they have for sale there. I would have loved to have gotten it but it was a bit out of my price range so I went with the Arcam A15 instead. Reg and Simon are good guys to chat with, too. It's a pretty cool store they've got there ... a great place to browse for an hour or two. |

Re: The VINYL Thread!
Man I could walk away with a nice stack but betting it wouldn't be cheap.
I wonder what they paid and what sorta markup they're doing. I'm not really in the know when it comes to pricing. Those David Bowie in the beginning I'd love to get and the 3 or 4 Cure that were in there. Too bad no Dio stuff  |
