Before I actually had the HT system feeding into the vintage receiver, and it was all a big pain in the ass.

I just gave my friend her records last week, don't know if she's opened them yet either. But we loved the Bowie concert shirt from the Serious Moonlight tour. They just don't make shirts with that cut anymore. It was like stepping into a John Hughes movie.

Oh, and one of the titles I ultimately passed on was Let it Bee, the debut from Voice of the Beehive. I found an American seller on Discogs with a "mint", "unplayed" copy much cheaper so I got that. You probably already see where this is going by my use of quotation marks. It's neither mint nor unplayed. The shrink wrap was long gone, and there were signs of wear on the vinyl. Now, it's still the best copy of the record I've ever gotten, and I'm keeping it, but it's NOT mint. He probably could have gotten away with an "NM" designation, but mint is mint as in brand new and this was not. I gave the guy a neutral rating on Discogs and he tears into me saying I should have just returned it blah blah blah. I don't see where I'm in the wrong. People suck.

That's too bad about the Voice of the Beehive. I've had good experiences using Discogs to this point but you just never know sometimes. I was running my turntable through my upstairs home theatre setup before but now having it in its own area on the main floor is working out much better for me. I really should have done this from the start but better late than never. Did you get the Bowie 83 baseball style shirt or the blue sleeveless one?

The numbered version sold out in 5 days, but for those who missed it and don't want to pay crazy inflated prices for it on the secondary market, Rhino has made an additional 5000 unnumbered copies available for sale. Can't blame them for not wanting to leave money on the table for this release, which sounds great.

Nice to see Rhino doing that ...

Picked up a great RSD release that flew under my radar back in April: The debut (and only) album by Tinted Windows. I don't even remember if it was at any of the stores I went to, I'd never even heard of them. But it's a powerpop supergroup consisting of Taylor Hanson (Hanson), James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins), Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne), and Bun E. Carlos (Cheap Trick). This was their only release, from 2009, and so far, only pressed on vinyl for RSD. I managed to get a copy for $30 off the 'cogs, and I gotta say its a great piece of powerpop. If that's your thing (and I know a for few of you here, it is), see if you can get a copy. You won't regret it.

Picked up these two the other day. Really nice pressings, and some of the songs on Floodland have a few differences from the various versions on other releases of the album.

Yeah, but now you have to listen to Sisters of Mercy.

(I kid, I kid. If you're into them, enjoy the records. They were never my cup of tea)

I like SoM, but they're not one of my favorite artists. Floodland is a pretty good album, though.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

I get it, they're not one of my favorites either but I really like these two albums. Their earlier stuff, and the later Vision Thing, not so much, so these two will probably be the only SOM I'll own on vinyl. And it's not like there will ever be a new album to buy.

I probably already mentioned this, but I read somewhere an interview with a DJ from the 80s who said they put on "This Corrosion" just because they wanted a smoke break.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

It was the In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida of the 80s.

I also remember hearing that a DJ broke Rush in the US by playing "Working Man" for similar reasons because it was a seven minute track.

And people heard it and started calling into the station thinking it was a new Led Zeppelin song.

I want this, LA Woman Ultra-High Quality Record but I don't want to pay the $125 it goes for these days.

Has anyone heard it?

Just a heads up, in November Rhino High Fidelity will be releasing a limited numbered box set of six Doors albums including this one, all cut from the original analog tapes. If you only want LA Woman, it's being assumed that after the box set is released, Rhino will release unnumbered versions of the albums individually (that's what they did after they released their ZZ Top box set). I have a couple RHF releases (Black Sabbath and Television debut albums) and they are excellent pressings and sound fantastic (my only complaint is that it's hard to fit the vinyl back into the heavy duty cardboard sleeves, it's a tight fit but I usually store my vinyl outside the sleeves anyway). These usually go for $40 a pop, so if you spring for the box set it will probably be around $240. More info here in the first section:

The Doors 1967-1971 6-LP set will arrive as the latest installment in Rhino’s acclaimed High Fidelity audiophile vinyl series on November 22nd, featuring all six of the band’s original studio albums cut from the original analog master tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearant Audio. The vinyl was pressed at Optimal Media and the box includes a heavyweight gatefold jacket featuring rare photos and liner notes by Doors archivist David Dutkowski. Only 3,000 copies of the limited-edition set will be available exclusively at thedoors.com and rhino.com.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Interesting. I'm not a fan of that many of their albums so I won't need the box set. Is the quality of "Rhino’s acclaimed High Fidelity audiophile vinyl series" as good as a UHQR version?

cultshock 10-08-24 06:42 PM

Re: The VINYL Thread!

To be honest, I don't know, I've never heard a UHQR vinyl of anything, but that release does look really nice. Perhaps someone else here has experience with their releases?

Toby Dramit 10-08-24 07:25 PM

Re: The VINYL Thread!

I've never owned a UHQR but I do have the Rhino High Fidelity edition of The Cars debut album and it sounds excellent. Kevin Gray is cutting the lacquers for all the High Fidelity titles that Rhino is releasing.

I missed out on RHF's The Cars S/T and it's now going for close to $200 on Discogs. Hoping it will get an unnumbered repress like some of the others, but haven't heard anything yet. :(

Yeah, I pre-ordered it just after it was announced. Got #172 / 5000. Makes for a great combo along with the MOFI limited edition of Candy-O that I have. 2 fantastic albums here.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

While I like high quality sounding stuff, sometimes the best is just the original. I found a copy of The Cars' debut record in the used stacks a couple years back, and the sound quality just blew me away. So much so that I immediately checked the record afterwards, thinking I had gotten some "enhanced" or "new high definition digital master" or whatever terms they use, but nope, just an analog copy from the 70s, not even a first pressing. Sounds amazeballs.

Toby Dramit 10-09-24 02:23 PM

Re: The VINYL Thread!

The original pressing of The Cars debut album is very highly regarded. I have an original pressing of Candy-O, bought back in '79, that's all but worn out now, sadly.

I have an original 1971 pressing of the Doors album and a 7" reel-to-reel tape version but I'm curious about how the UHQR version sounds.

Yes, next time I went back to that store, I told the owner how good that copy of The Cars' sounded, and he said it was a well-produced record that has always been highly regarded by vinyl enthusiasts.

I probably mentioned this before, but a few years back I found a virgin copy of Candy-O in the wild. 80s pressing, but from the Columbia House plant, not one of the more sought after ones. Still, I finally slit open the shrink wrap it had been imprisoned in for nearly 40 years and enjoyed the splendor.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

I love Candy-O. Every song is outstanding (save for maybe Shoo Be Doo, which is essentially a minute-and-a-half bridge between Double Life and the title track). My favorite album of theirs.

If you want the Audio-Technica VM540ML now is a good time to get one from for only $218.

The Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream re-master is probably the best sounding vinyl I own right now.
