Re: The VINYL Thread!
This ultrasonic cleaner look very interesting. https://humminguru.com/products/humm...cord-cleaner-2
Strange that it costs so much more at Amazon. Alternative manual method… https://thevinylpress.com/app/upload...h1_2024-03.pdf |
Re: The VINYL Thread!
The HumminGuru is the one I've been considering myself, and the price isn't absolutely horrible (on the other hand I think the Spin-Clean is overpriced for what it is).

Sisters of Mercy - Body & Soul/Walk Away https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...cd6c014f22.jpg Ramones - 1975 Sire Demos https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...699a28846f.jpg I wasn't going to pick this up, but it was only twenty-five bucks. Actually, I was sort of surprised how inexpensive so many of the things I picked up were. I was really expecting everything to be in the $35-$45 range, but quite a few were under $30. Corey Taylor - CMF2B… or Not 2B https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...aba6a30d2f.jpg Black Crowes - Wanting & Waiting 7" Single https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...8d38f03669.jpg Soul Jazz Records Presents - PUNK 45: Kill The Hippies! Kill Yourself! https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...d04c9eae13.jpg This is my second of these compilations. The first one was a good listen, and I thought this one sounded like fun, so I picked it up. Malfunkshun - Olympus Awaits (Purple Vinyl) https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...e1ecb21097.jpg Malfunkshun begat Mother Love Bone who begat Pearl Jam. Always wanted one of their records in my collection, so here we go. At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul (Orange/Black vinyl) https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...11505fd8c2.jpg Impulse buy. Don't own it on any format, so I figured I might as well make it mine. Dio - Last in Line Zoetrope Picture Disc https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...b6c9a6ef04.jpg I normally avoid picture discs like the plague unless they have some interesting or unique artwork. I already have an original pressing of this LP. This was only $25, so I picked it up to see the zoetrope effect, which is actually pretty cool to see on a turntable. Sort of wish I picked up the Bolan zoetrope PD as well... GBI - The Regulator 7" Single https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...2f38593f25.jpg Dave Grohl and Anthrax covering Bad Brains? Okay, I don't know if this was a late addition to RSD, or I just missed it on the list. The owner of my friendly neighborhood record store had a copy of this in the back for me in case I wanted it, and I sure did! I wanted to grab a copy of Witchfinder General's "Death Penalty" LP, but I don't think my store got any. It was under 1000 copies, and it's my experience that those can be tough to get. Total came to a bit under $245 with sales tax, which isn't too bad for nine items. |
Re: The VINYL Thread!
^ the Kill Hippies comp (I might have referred to it as No Hippies" in my Saturday RSD report) came highly recommended from a friend, who has it on CD. I'm also looking forward to checking it out.
Not having any luck finding the Talking Heads record in the wild, but I'll get it eventually I'm sure. And at a reasonable, sub $50 price. |
Re: The VINYL Thread!
Nice haul! I didn't know about some of these, I would have liked to get that Sisters of Mercy single and the Witchfinder General album.

Re: The VINYL Thread!
It was weed over records so....I missed out on that DIO zoetrope effect
I've only got like 2 stores left around me. It's kinda sad. I don't think record stores will last another 20yrs |

The guy in front of me told me to go to Folk Arts if I wanted the Ramones record and no line. I asked about Vinyl Junkies and he said it was a zoo. There were also the options of Record City, Feel It, Flimzy's and Normal Records, all of which were no more than a 10 minute drive away |

I don't like to play picture discs because they wear out quickly, but I can just put this on the turntable and let it spin while I play the album off of CD. |

Re: The VINYL Thread!
After doing a lot of research I ordered the HumminGuru ultrasonic cleaner from Hong Kong. It saved a lot of money ordering directly from them rather than from Amazon.

Re: The VINYL Thread!
I should probably get one of those fancy-schmancy record cleaners. I still use an old-fashioned brush.
But in a lot of ways, I sort of envy Hippie Joe who, fifty years ago, bought the new Yes and Skynyrd records at his local ALCO for a ten dollar bill, went home, threw them on his $30 Sears record player with a penny perched above the needle, and rolled a joint on the jacket. He didn't need any of those protractors, scales, or record cleaning brushes. And he was too high to worry about things like static and surface noise. |
Re: The VINYL Thread!
TBH the accessories are a big part of why I enjoy the hobby. Also I’m a little late to the convo but basic yellow spin cleaner and several fancy brushes here.

The joint is probably cheaper now though. :)

Adjusted for inflation, that $10 record is now $75, and that $30 turntable is $235.

Re: The VINYL Thread!
I don't post in this thread too often, but I'm so enamored with this release I thought I should share. I recently picked up the Sword of Doom OST on a bit of a whim while also ordering some UHD discs from an independent online retailer (if you're curious which one, feel free to ask - I'm not trying to shill for anyone). Everything about this record is gorgeous - all of the artwork in the gatefold cover and insert, the colored vinyl, and of course the music on the high-quality pressing. I love the movie and I love the music in samurai films in general, so this is a big winner.

I wish I had known. I basically have Re-Animated Records in old La Mesa. I know there are more around North Park area but by the time I drive to these other places, they're already packed. Wish I knew about Folk Arts.
Now that record is in the $100 range. Most people go to flip which is sad on such limited stuff. But that's the game so what can ya do... All the other stores, you can hit in bunches. Going to North/South Park? Go to Pack Ratt, Folk Arts, Red Brontosaurus, Full Contact Rock N Roll, and Vinyl Junkies. Hillcrest/Mission Hills area? M-Theory, Flimzy's, maybe Taaang, then down to Point Loma for Record City and Stereo Unlimited. Downtown? Normal and Feel-It are literally within walking distance of one another. If you're going up the coast, you can stop at Lou's in Encinitas, Spin in Carlsbad, then head inland to Standards in Vista. |

How much did that player cost you and where did you get it?
Technics stopped producing turntables for awhile but now they're making some successors in the SL-1200 line. I have a mk7 in my home theater with an Ortofon 2M Blue cartridge. The mk7 runs $1100 and the Blue on a pre-mounted headshell is about $230. |
Re: The VINYL Thread!
Finally snagged a copy of the RSD Talking Heads record, $60. Was hoping I'd get one under $50, but this is about as low as they're going for right now.

Re: The VINYL Thread!
The HumminGuru finally arrived from Hong Kong. In 2 days I've washed about a dozen records, starting with the ones that were extra noisy or skipped.
I had two records that would repeat a groove over and over. I previously tried pretty much everything I could, wet cleaning with a Discwasher, adjusting the tracking force, even the anti-skating, but nothing worked. After cleaning those two played perfectly at normal tracking force. I found that pretty amazing. Surface noise is much lower, and I had pretty clean records to begin with. One thing I really like is that after the record has gone through a cleaning cycle it doesn't attract any dust, even after playing a whole side it looks completely clean. Being in a fairly high humidity area, static is rarely a concern. But it seems the washing totally removed any attraction the record has for dust. I have a few records that still have some noise so I'll try cleaning them again after the surfactant arrives. So far I've only used distilled water. The cleaning process is noisy. It starts with a loud, high-frequency squeal that gets quieter after a while, but you don't want to be near it when that's going on. After the water drains the drying is pretty quiet. The unit is semi-expensive, but given how simple it is to use and how well it cleans the records, I have to say it's worth the price. And ordering it direct from the company saves $90 or even more if you are in a sales-taxed state. |
Re: The VINYL Thread!
Thanks for the review, I'm really considering one of these.
