Re: The VINYL Thread!
Yep - just made my own hitlist:
To Only Record Water for Ten Days - John Frusciante Bubblegum (Original Draft) - Mark Lanegan The Blind Leading The Naked - Violent Femmes The Live Album - Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts |
Re: The VINYL Thread!
Release list here (sorry, it's in Canadian ... ;)): Record Store Day Canada
No real must-haves for me this time around. The live John Coltrane, Pink Floyd, Cars, and Steely Dan look intriguing, though. Curious about the sound quality. The Floyd one is from a bootleg source. |
Re: The VINYL Thread!
Some interesting stuff there, I'm intrigued by the "Japanese Edition" of Sisters of Mercy's First and Last and Always, where four tracks are different versions compared to the US/UK pressings (which is a common occurrence with a lot of Sisters' various album pressings, lots of alternate mixes/takes abound depending on what version you own).

Re: The VINYL Thread!
The more i go through the list the more I want. Look at that Cars' album. Pretty much a greatest hits live, and from a band that never released a live record.
When I go to M Theory, I'm heading straight for the M section for that Muffs record. But if I see Heartbeat City Live in the Cs, it's gonna be hard not to grab one. |

Rhino released this one here on Record Store Day 9 years ago ... https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...f3ef824afe.jpg Those two would make nice bookends. |
Re: The VINYL Thread!
I knew I should have gone to Discogs before shooting my mouth off about there being "no live Cars record".
There's a few on there, mostly bootlegs though. And the one cited above was recorded before Candy-O. In other words, it's just songs from the first album along with some covers! Granted, The Cars' first album is a banger, but I'd like some songs from Candy-O and Shake It Up too. Maybe some Panorama and Heartbeat City, but not too much. |
Re: The VINYL Thread!
Yeah, Candy-O is my favorite Cars album so I'd love to see a decent live release from that tour and/or the early 80s. Live At The Agora does have 'Night Spots', though, as that was a staple in their live sets prior to Candy-O being released.

A quick trip to Discogs shows a radio broadcast record from 1979 called "Supergroups in Concert" that mostly features Candy-O songs (sans my favorite, "It's All I Can Do", grrr). Right now, the only copies for sale are in Europe, but even getting it shipped wouldn't be outrageous, the prices seem to hover around a very acceptable $30. Shipping nearly doubles the cost, but it's still quite reasonable IMO.

Re: The VINYL Thread!
I'm VERY trusting of radio broadcast concert records from the 80s. Moreso than official releases from the bands, if you can believe that. King Biscuit Flower Hour broadcasts were top notch. They're funded by a national outfit, they did not cut corners.
Don't believe me? Just look up some King Biscuit records that are in your price range, buy one, and see what the quality is like. |

Re: The VINYL Thread!
Well, one live record I can already vouch for is the Joan Jett and the Blackhearts album, as it was a show that aired on KBFH, so you know going in that the quality is good.
ETA: OH! And I see there's a copy of the Supergroups Cars albums I was talking about, and he's only shipping within Canada. You should get it. And if you don't want it, buy it anyway and I'll happily pay you the extra post to ship it to the US. |
Re: The VINYL Thread!
This looks interesting ... I like the setlist on it.
I'll be heading over to RCP this weekend to do a little browsing. Last time I was there they had Live At The Agora in stock. They carry a lot of unofficial releases, boots, etc., so they may even have this one (or can get it in). |

RSD '26 list is up. A LOT of wants: Marshall Crenshaw, The dBs, Bad Brains, Talking Heads, Joan Jett, XTC, Prince Buster, a power pop compilation, yet another live Ramones record.
Alcatrazz - No Parole from Rock and Roll (2x red/black splatter) https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...f74453f4c8.jpg I don't actually own this, but I've always wanted it. Early Yngwie. Babymetal - Live at the O2 Arena (clear vinyl) https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...cc790f47f4.jpg Some interesting guests on here like Tom Morello and Poppy. Alice Cooper - The Revenge of Alice Cooper (2x Picture Disc) https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...6c7799ac34.jpg I generally avoid picture discs, but this one looks really sharp. I also don't already own this album, so that's more incentive. The Cure - Acoustic Hits (Silver Bio 2x Vinyl) https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...2f4767a29e.jpg Only have this on CD, so I'll grab this. Probably pass on the regular Greatest Hits, though. The Gits - etcetera https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...b90cffdbee.jpg Gits are awesome. Always wondered what Mia could have done if she wasn't murdered. Judas Priest - Live in Los Angeles '90 (Transparent Purple Vinyl) https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...12f8506791.jpg Track list has some deep cuts and interesting choices. Look Outside Your Window (splatter LP/Die-Cut Jacket) https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...c2779afeee.jpg Side project with some Slipknot members. Megadeth - Hidden Treasures https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...7735444bad.jpg I don't already own this, and it has extra tracks from the Japanese edition. The Muffs - Live at Fort Apache (yellow vinyl) https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...0a57264b18.jpg Yeah, why not. Pixies - Live in Newport (2x green/yellow LP) https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...8ac4b96f60.jpg Acoustic set with the original line-up. Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow - Live From Koln 1976 (3x red/yellow/blue LP) https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...8e6e04a5c5.jpg Three LPs. Whether or not I get this probably depends on the price. Sex Pistols - Jubilee (Pink Vinyl LP) https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...bba52d9ee9.jpg Looks like a fun piece to add to my collection. Sisters of Mercy - First and Last and Always LP https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...88e03bf32c.jpg Don't already own this, so I'll pick this up. The Sword - Four Songs EP (Black Ice Vinyl) https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...892f1e446f.jpg Sort of marginal, but I think I'll still get it. Has art etched on the B-side, which is always kind of cool. Thin Lizzy - Live in Cleveland 1976 (2x transparent vinyl) https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...693ecdcfde.jpg Sharp-looking package. |
Re: The VINYL Thread!
Haha, I just looked at the post of mine you quoted, and I want to tell everyone that yes, I am aware that music and records have been produced after 1990...
...none of it any damn good though |
Re: The VINYL Thread!
I got fifteen damned records on my list; almost half are double albums.. Am I going to make it out the store for under $500? -eek-
|
Re: The VINYL Thread!
I figure I'm on the hook for about $400 if I get all the ones I want.
Like that power pop comp is on Soul Jazz Records, and all their releases are $39.99, even single disc outings. |
Re: The VINYL Thread!
Picked up a pair of Chris Bellman remastered-from-the-original-analog-tapes vinyl albums that I'd had my eye on for a while and finally found in store yesterday:
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...afcfe0fdd1.jpg Van Halen II (Warner Bros. 2015) https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...dbde373ffc.jpg Warren Zevon - Excitable Boy (Rhino Reserve 2025) The Van Halen II is going to pair well with the sealed original pressing of the first Van Halen album that I was able to pick up a couple of years ago ... Looking forward to spinning both of these. The sound quality should be fantastic ... |

Re: The VINYL Thread!
I'm going to be cleaning this one, and a few others, this weekend prior to playing. I'll let you know how it sounds.
Here's an interesting article on this particular pressing: Review: Warren Zevon on Rhino Reserve & Universal’s New “Vinylphyle” Series |

Re: The VINYL Thread!
^I don't remember that. I remember him being a musical guest and asking them not to ask him to play Werewolves of London, which of course, Larry did.
I'm still annoyed with myself for not picking up the Audio Fidelity CD of Excitable Boy. Had it in my amazon cart when it wasn't crazy priced, and then put it on my wish list so one of my kids could get it for me for Christmas. They didn't, and of course it shot up in price. |
Re: The VINYL Thread!
I've seen the Letterman episodes with Zevon. Those were great.

Re: The VINYL Thread!
Oh yeah, I remember that Larry Sanders episode.
I think it played out like this -- Zevon was on that night, and before the show started he told Larry that he was sick of people asking him to play "Werewolves of London." He goes on and plays a different song on the show. Then, when the show is almost over, Larry says they still have some time left and tells him to play "Werewolves of London." And just sits at his desk with a smug look on his face. rotfl |
