Re: Taylor Swift -- Discussion Thread

This is a very unique situation. Taylor got screwed over and her solution to re-record her catalog was different from Styx or Squeeze because it wasn't just to put new versions out there, it was to reclaim her music after she felt it was kind of stolen from her. And it's different because her relationship to her fans is different -- they get it and will stream the new versions not so much because they prefer them as because it's what she wants them to do and what they feel is right. She wanted access to her catalog and Big Machine sold it to Scooter Braun without her getting a chance to buy it (at least according to Taylor). I have no problem with her end-around solution -- those original versions still exist and mostly are better in one way or another. But fans have a choice.
Besides the new release has officially made Taylor Swift a billionaire -- the first performing artist I can think of (besides Lennon-McCartney) who got there almost entirely based on her creative entertainment work output and not as a result of an outside enterprise (like Jay-Z, Rhianna and Jimmy Buffett).

Looks like AMC is blowing out their excess Taylor cups and popcorn buckets

Re: Taylor Swift -- Discussion Thread

No interest in seeing the Taylor Swift movie, but I went to the AMC site and put two tickets, two drinks, a popcorn, and a big pretzel in my cart and it came to eighty bucks.

Large drink.. $7.49. Popcorn... $10.00... Big Pretzel... $15. Convenience fees.

They really are replicating the concert experience at the movie theater!

(I haven't been to a theater since before the bug hit, and I rarely bought drinks or popcorn before because the prices are ridiculous, but it's still a sticker shock.)

Who has time to eat and drink when you're dancing and singing? Plus the pretzel bites are half the cost of the large pretzel.

I personally know some artists that have either chosen to own their own masters by not signing to a label, which means they in turn will not be as big of an artist to the general public. As well as other artists that have negotiated a deal with their record label to get a 50/50 split of revenues from streaming, video plays, etc. In turn they get to become a bigger artist to the general public which leads to more money made but giving up some flexibility with their own art.
Have you ever heard the term "unequal bargaining power"? It's not realistic to expect a young artist -- represented or not -- to have the clout to turn down the contract or negotiate a better one. For new artists, it's a take it or leave it issue, a contract of adhesion. Yes, there is always the option of not signing with anyone, but that's also not a realistic option for someone looking to get their music out. Everyone wants to sign a record deal. We shouldn't be in favor of rules that give the record companies even MORE power than they already have.

I really love Folklore and especially Evermore. "Champagne Problems" is one of the best songs that I have ever heard.

And she changed the lyrics to a song to include him.

So obviously we still don’t know if they’re dating…

Taylor Swift postpones Saturday Rio concert after 23-year-old fan dies at show amid extreme temperatures

Taylor Swift postponed her Saturday-night concert in Rio de Janeiro due to extreme temperatures and one day after a fan died at her first "Eras Tour" show in the city.

Swift was scheduled to do two more shows in Rio de Janeiro, on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's concert has been rescheduled to Monday, Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes said on X.

“The safety and well-being of my fans, fellow performers, and crew has to and always will come first,” Swift wrote on Instagram Saturday.

A 23-year-old fan died at Swift's "Eras Tour" concert in Rio on Friday night, according to a statement from the show’s organizers in Brazil.

Swift said in a post on Instagram early Saturday ET that she was devastated by the death.

“I can’t believe I’m writing these words but it is with a shattered heart that I say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show,” Swift wrote. “There’s very little information I have other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young."

looking it up, it seems like it was a high of 93 during the day, and around 80 in the evening which sounds like normal or slightly higher than normal for most summer festivals in the US. I imagine there were other factors involved in this young person's death than the weather.

I don't know WSB, what was Swift supposed to do when a fan dies at the negligent third-world venue a couple of hours before you come out? What rises to your level of acceptable behavior in this circumstance?

One would think she'd have a logistics person handling that beforehand. If they see that they are ill-equipped to handle the crowd due to the heat then you cancel the show ahead of time. Hell, she canceled/rescheduled a couple of weeks ago in Argentina due to the "winds", she should have canceled it here due to heat. I understand if you give fans bottle water it will eat at your bottom line but she can more than afford it.

I don't know how much control an artist has over a venue, especially concessions, and especially at the last minute. Clearly she did a lot once she was aware of the issue.

*Tour manager is who meant when I said logistics person. The TM should have been the one to see about those things.

Re: Taylor Swift -- Discussion Thread

I would assume that, when it comes to concerts, that the venue is ultimately responsible for things like crowd safety and crowd control, and not the artist or their people.

Maybe Taylor needs to start requesting them to provide her with a bowl of M&Ms with the brown ones removed in her rider.

Re: Taylor Swift -- Discussion Thread

I went to AMC today to see Napoleon and saw at the concession stand that the Taylor Swift cups and popcorn buckets/tins are on clearance.

Tins are $5.99

Buckets are $2.49

and both cups are 99 cents.

Guess they massively overstocked. Well, if you want to get some cheap Swiftie stocking stuffers, this might be the time.

The heat index (heat plus humidity) has been in the 130s. It's bad there.

Heat index is why I'd rather be in 110° in AZ vs 95° in FL.
