...I also really wish they would've captured that magical moment when the lights go down and the crowd goes nuts- probably the best example of that is on Madonna's Confessions Tour DVD... you can see it here- it's not the same without the 5.1 sound, but http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyAqcxlVtCE ... probably one of the best concert openers of all time

Re: New Gaga single "Born this Way"
I caught this show tonight while doing some extensive surfing & researching.
It was long on theatrics, all right. Not so much on actual original music.
I like dance/club music with a good beat a lot, but not a fan of the Madonna/Gag style. Just way too simplistic, repetitive lyrics. And musically, it doesn't exactly break new ground.
The concert itself was a study in cliches bordering on parody. The horrible number where she climbed awkwardly on the piano, stood on her head, stuck her foot on the guitar & pounded away on the keys
...it all brought back the Dancing Dwarfs around the miniature Stonehenge. Which actually was original, come to think about it.
All of the "You're so strong...you make me strong...gay unicorns are the best unicorns...I used to be in the cheap seats...someday you'll be up on this stage...I dreamed of seeing my name on the marquee (Gaga??)...I love your suede...Jesus loves everybody and so does my dancer...etc., etc.) was entertaining in an awful sort of way. The b/w shots of the dancers changing between numbers have been done countless times before, as was the ending acappella number over the end credits, etc.
And never forget that whenever the show flags, always scream some obscentities, say "Madison Square Garden" or "New York", and yell, "Put your hands up...bounce with me!" And thank everybody for buying a ticket (except for the "asshole" guitarist...who knew that was such a term of endearment all these years?).
The most telling shot was not the elaborate costuming, fire-shooting bras, or red paint-drenched sweaty bodies...it was when Lady was writhing on the stage floor while the front-row fans only a few feet away were looking up at the monitors to see themselves rather than watching her. So much for mesmerizing.
No disrespect to anyone who likes her (although I found her mixing blasphemy with quasi-religious blathering really distasteful), but I always find these spectacles to be largely a cover-up for a lack of musical ability (regardless of the genre). The better the songs & performances, the less elaborate the staging needed to keep the interest of the audience. As big as U2 performances can get, I could see them on the barest stage & they'd still have a great presence. Not sure that some of these other performers could say the same. I'd like to hear them perform a stripped-down version of some of their songs accompanied only by guitar or piano.
Judging from this performance alone, Lady isn't fit to shine (lick) the shoes of Tori Amos or Sarah McLachlan. She might give Miley Cyrus a run for her Hannah Montana money.
But if that sort of thing's your bag, enjoy it.

Re: New Gaga single "Born this Way"
Just out of curiosity, what dance/club music DO you like? I only ask that because you lead by saying you like dance/club music but in your criticisms you negatively compare Gaga with alternative/AC singer-songwriter types like Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan. Seems like a bit of an apples and oranges comparison, even if Gaga does dabble in piano-based songs.
And I like some of Amy Winehouse's stuff, so I'm not judging her by her personal behavior (especially since I know nothing about Stephani outside of her Gaga act). The concert just seemed quite amateurish to me & almost insulting to the audience. It was like watching a female, musical version of Andrew Dice Clay...and where is he today?
I honestly don't see a lot of longevity to her career.
I'm not against theatrics & love Talking Heads "Stop Making Sense" Big Suit type of theater...but that seemed new & fresh vs. Gaga's rehashing of Madonna's act.
If I had to list artists, most would be 80's-style club/pop stuff such as Bronski Beat, Fine Young Cannibals (remix); Simple Minds; The The, Big Pig, Shriekback, Bowie in his 'dance' phase, etc. More recent would be TV on the Radio & Fergie, I guess. I've got a pal on DVDTalk who sends a lot of vids including dance stuff & I like almost all of them...and he's a Gaga fan, to judge by the music forum.
The point is that I like a good, pulsating beat heavy on the bass & percussion as much as anyone. Just like individual tunes more than entire albums by the same artist, so it's not like I hate the genre. I used to buy the dance remixes of a lot of rock & pop acts because I enjoyed the beat.
Some of Gaga's rhythms I like, but the lyrics are just so dang shallow & the endless repetition put me off. Also not a big fan of her voice, which I would compare to Haley on American Idol. It's not just Gaga; most of the recent AI guests such as Enrique, Lopez, etc. are mind-numbing "She's a Dirty Dancer, She's a Dirty Dancer", etc.
My negative reaction to Gaga's concert had more to do with the awkward (IMO) halting of songs to talk to the crowd in cliches and the cheap-looking theatrics. The choreography was good, but I'm more into the music than the dancing.

For the record, I get a little nauseated whenever Bono starts going off into pompous land when talking to the audience, too.

At this point I just can't separate her from Rebecca Black.
And did anyone...even Howie...find that standing on her head number while sticking her foot on the guitar to be anything except awkward?
Edit: Found a great cover of Bad Romance done by Lissie. On the other hand, found a laughable version of Poker Face by Daughtry (when he got to the "puh-puh-puh-puh" part, the weakness of the songwriting became painfully apparent.

Leak is out... quick thoughts... "You and I" doesn't sound like she does it live. It's a lot faster and actually sounds countryish... I like the live versions better. I'm digging on "Bloody Mary".

That's a shame. It's really incredible live, and I saw a clip of her performing the song on Oprah as well. Very good there too.
I wish they would've included a live version of it on the deluxe edition of the album.

Re: New Gaga single "Born this Way"
I didn't realize that there are 3 songs on the other edition not included on this one (not counting the 5 tracks on bonus disc).
Why is this edited? Will Best Buy even sell it unedited?

Re: New Gaga single "Born this Way"
Thanks for posting. I saw this during the end credits of the HBO special but wasn't blown away. I wish it had just been her without the background singers, though. It sounds like she has a pretty nice voice, but it would be easier to tell if she were solo.
She is an amazing dancer.
She is an amazing dancer.
That's the main reason I like her stuff.

Yeah, I guess she had an exclusive deal with Target for the Deluxe album but backed after some anti-gay issue that came up with the company.

So now that the album is out, what does everyone think? I know most of the talk of the new album has gone on in the 5/23 .99 Deal Thread.
