Love the lyrics in Windowsill:
"You can't forgive what you can't forget"
that are revisted in My Body is a Cage two songs later:
"Just because you're forgotten, that doesn't mean you're forgiven"
Good stuff...

I guess what I'm trying to say: give it some time. You said it yourself about Neon Bible: "Even the songs that I didn't really care for at first have actually become my favorites of the album"; well, same goes for Funeral.

There were two songs on the album in particular that really needed to be given a chance to grow on me. Neighborhood #2 (Laika) and Neighborhood #3 (Power Out) sounded like they were both a slide-whistle away from being just a couple more cheesy, cornball, poppy Modest Mouse-esque songs. They still aren't my favorite songs on the album by a long shot, but after giving them a chance I've started to appreciate them a lot more.
Great album...great band.

Without the truly excellent, swelling musical backing given "Windowsill", it would be a fairly rote and trite protest song.
Still it's a great song, no doubt about that.

They would've been cool 15-20 years ago, but seem really forced now.

best show i've been to this year
to those of you who haven't had a chance yet: i think you'll be quite satisfied. their stage set/presence/sound/energy blows all past performances away. regine really stole the show.

I hesitated to put this at the top of my year list so far, but every time I listen to it, it creeps up another notch. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up at the top by the end of the year.
Right now, I'm really digging "Neon Bible" (the song), which means my pattern from the first album is returning: not only is it a grower, but my favorite song on the album shifts over time. For the record, their first album topped my year end list for that year... So this may be indicative of something...

This album has gotten better for me with repeat listens. The overall album is not as good as Funeral, but I think "Intervention" and "No Cars Go" are far and away there best songs.

Definitely cant understand the love for this CD. To me, its a mish mash of a little bit of everything currently going on in the genre - and the band doesnt strike me as especially talented or groundbreaking (or even listenable). Whatever. Maybe some of us don't 'get' this band.

The first time I heard Funeral, it didn't strike me as anything special. I grudgingly listened to it a few more times, mostly as background music as I was working. And slowly it crept into my consciousness. And then, wham, it hit me and I loved the album.
It takes some dedication though.
And, in the end, you simply may not like them - in which case, I may not understand but the more power to you!
