Never patted down at club shows (<200 capacity). I'm always patted down at the bigger shows (200+)

I just saw Damage Plan exactly one week ago. I heard this morning and it hit me like a brick. He will be missed.

benedict: that's totally f'd up...between that and this happening on the anniverary of Lennon's death...just too weird.
For those who asked about it, from what I can tell from the story I read, (LINK), no one else in the band was injured or killed.
On the positive(?) side of things, at least he died while doing what he loved. Also, for those who think the killer got off light by getting killed...from what I could tell from the story, he got shot in the face. Personally, I would have loved to see him be the poster boy for EVERY album put out for the next year or so, with each cover being a variation of this album cover:
RIP DIMEBAG

Terrible, terrible act of violence. I can't comprehend what could have made this guy think it was a good idea. While I liked Pantera a lot, I wasn't really impressed with Damageplan. Although, seeing them live a few weeks ago made up for it. Very energetic, BS'd with the crowd, and had a good time playing.
I am currently heading out to buy the fixings for a Black Tooth Grin, and will watch my Pantera dvd through.
As a side note, I have noticed that the venues I attend for concerts have begun doing a much more thorough search. Of course, this is at the front doors, not any side entrances.
RIP Dimebag, and thank you.

Reports are making it sound like he was yelling at Darrell before shooting him. It's sounding more and more like he was a deranged fan, enraged over the breakup of Pantera. They're saying he was always hanging out at local tattoo studios and annoying customers and employees and making everyone feel uncomfortable.

Agreed, RevLiver. That was in the story I linked, and appears to be showing up in other stories as well now.
Obviously the guy was deranged, it wasn't Dimebag or Vinnie Paul who truly ended Pantera, but Phil Anselmo, when he decided he wanted to go full time with Superjoint Ritual. From what I can gather over at Amazon, it seems like their last new material album (Reinventing the Steel) came out in 2000. Their best of album came out December 2003. I assume that the brothers knew Pantera was done and decided to put out the best of album, either as a closure sort of thing, or to fulfill contractual obligations perhaps.
Anyways...like I said I think Anselmo decided he was done with Pantera (and Down as well). Not that I think HE should be attacked, but I think it just sort of shows that the shooter was indeed not exactly right in the head.
Oh yeah, I fixed my first post so that the pic now works.

Phil Isn't really done with DOWN, just on hiatus, as far as I've heard. I think they are waiting for the remaining members of DOWN to work on their respective main act bands before returning for another album. Superjoint is Phils main band now, and DOWN is still a side project.
From what I've read, everyone blames Phil for the breakup of Pantera, but mostly due to creative and personality differences. Phil claimed Vinnie and Dime wanted to go more mainstream, then claimed they wouldn't contact him directly with any information concerning new material or recording, so he decided to call it quits and work with Superjoint.
I think Phil is a talented writer, and a damn great frontman, but he's also an arrogant prick. I can't completely blame anyone for the breakup of Pantera, I just kinda wish it never happened at all.
Dime will be missed, hopefully the remaining 3 members can at least bury the hatchet and make amends. Thankfully I don't think anyone would try to replace Dime, so at least his legacy with Pantera can rest in peace.

I'm pretty much 100% with you on that assessment, Ergyu...I can't imagine that any one person is solely responsible for the break up of Pantera. I'm sure there were communication problems etc.
I can't imagine though, based on Damageplan's sound, that the brothers Abbot wanted to go "commercial"...isn't that what Pantera developed from? Weren't they more commercial before Cowboys From Hell? I suppose it's commercial from Phil's perspective, as Superjoint is a harder/harsher sound than Damageplan...
Can anyone rotate this image appropriately? It's like this over at whatever site google yanked it off of...can't believe that's the bros. Abbot, at least Vinnie Paul is somewhat recognizable...I assume that's Dimebag (perhaps known as Diamond at that time) to Vinnie's left? It's impossible to imagine that man without his way long and very reddish goatee!

Fuck, I heard all about this yesterday and it just makes me sick. Im a Texan and all us cowboys from hell felt clost to Pantera. The brothers were 2 of the most coolest, nicest guys in metal. They didnt do heavy drugs, loved to party and drink, hang out with fans, and be all around great guys. They gave 150% live and NO one deserves to go out the way Dime did. I feel so bad for Vinnie. As a guy with a very close sibling (we play metal together), I have no idea how he can go on.
Fuck...
Fuck...

So I never got into Pantera, I might head to a used cd shop tonight see what I can find. Anyway, other than the obvious drug reference, how does one arrive at the nickname "Dimebag?" Or is that it, end of story?

I just heard about this today
Pantera is one of my all time favorte bands and needless to say this is pretty damn upsetting to hear
As far as albums to get ... Go out and get Cowboys from Hell, Vulgar Display of Power and Far Beyond Driven... All 3 are just awesome albums that just define what metal is. Their next 2 were good too I thought, but not as great as those 3. They also have some good tracks on some movie soundtracks, 'specially avoid the light from Dracula 2000 (sucky movie, good soundtrack) and Heavy Metal 2000. if they added those 2 songs to Reinventing the Steel it would have been a better album
Farewell Dimebag!

Harpo, the band is already suffering and you have to post a picture when Pantera was a glam-metal band.
Uranium on the FUSE network has a special tribute show that runs about an hour with that annoying twit Juliya.
I hope the Headbangers Ball has a special show dedicated to him tonight.

I'm watching the URANIUM show right now and that feeling of "This didn't happen" is coming back.
I mean you see the guys in the band and they're so up beat, happy, on top of their game....and then in a few short moments....it's all over....just like that.
I know that crazy fuck obsessed "fans" are out there and there's really nothing anyone can do but DAMN! This world sucks! I mean because some fuck can't handle his mental state and crazy actions others have to suffer. John Lennons's death was always sad to me but he wasn't "My generation" so it was hard for me to totally understand why so many were taking it personally. But of course Dimebag's death is far more personal to me and I think I have better understanding of why older Lennon fans were so devistated when he died.
