Re: Screen Actors Strike 2023

Well, this isn’t good news. Talks suspended. SAG-AFTRA is allegedly really playing hardball with the studios. The main sticking point is allegedly revenue sharing.

We need a statement from the actors to have both sides.

Shit looks like it's going to be a long strike and as nice as it was to get the writers settled, it's still going to be a long time before we get new original scripted TV and movie content.

Re: Screen Actors Strike 2023

2024 movies that have not been completed will likely get pulled off the calendar very soon. Dead Reckoning Part 2 is supposed to come out next summer, but they only have less than half filmed. Expect that to be moved to 2025.

Some TV shows that still need post production ADR will also de significantly delayed. The scripted TV season for 2023-24 is in serious jeopardy.

But at least everything will be ready, right? Full series/features already written. The ramp up once they figure shit out between the actors and the studios is going to make for a super busy time in the industry.

You'd think this would also result in a bunch of cancellations though as things get backed up.

Is that what will happen? Will writers start working on episodes even though the actors aren't available to film anything?

Some series have already been cancelled or planned series that were iffy have been shut down.

First season shows will be harder to prep as in most instances, like Marvel it seems, there's no pilot filmed. Sure, some series get full season commitments without a pilot based on producer/showrunner and talent alone, but for established shows that aren't costly due to location, prep can take weeks, especially for a network show. Writers can churn out 5-9 episodes of a 20-22 episode network show before the first one shoots. So yeah, studios can technically bank written episodes while upholding the agreements reached with the WGA. The thing that might change is the shooting schedule. Scripted 1hr long shows shoot between 5-8 days. I'd say that the schedule might be shortened even more, or there will be more overlap. So, to use baseball analogies, instead of 1-2 episodes on deck and 1 in the batters box, there may be 5 on deck, 2 in the batters box and 1 walking to the plate.

Streaming/non-network has a much more flexible schedule, aren't held to full network type season. 10-13 episodes. No hard air date to deliver. Seasons can be split or a full season can drop onto their service.

Re: Screen Actors Strike 2023

If the SAG-AFTRA strike isn't settled by the middle of November 2023, we may be talking a serious dearth of scripted TV shows and theatrical movies by April 2024. And that would be a humongous financial disaster for everyone involved. And could even sink the economies of California and possibly New York state into a recession.

I'm not worried - there'll still be a lot of new shows and movies to watch.

I'm expecting some form of a Big Brother season in the winter/spring.

Much like Beyond the Spider-verse, I think that was destined to happen regardless. The one that will hurt the most for me is if Gladiator 2 gets pushed to Summer 2025.

Fun Fact

Big Brother had a spring season during the 2008 strike. The winner of that season "Adam Jasinki" would use his prize money to start an Oxycodone Drug Ring, and would be sent to prison for a few years.Another contestant in that season also served time in prison as one of his distributors.

Another Fun Fact: The political and criminal justice systems are still reeling from the rise of "reality TV" that came from those strikes.

Re: Screen Actors Strike 2023

I hope it ends this weekend as well. However, Fran and her negotiating team aren't fucking around and won't take a bad deal and let 100+ days be for nothing. That would make a lot very unhappy. And you don't want a tight vote either. The writers had only 10 people who said No.

I'm sure there are some actors less well off than others who don't care and just want to get back to work. But, they have to sign the right deal. The studios are going to find every shady way and loophole to fuck them over.

From all accounts, the toughest thing will be the streaming compensation.

Jeff Sneider, who is a freelance entertainment reporter, claims it’s all, but done.

Re: Screen Actors Strike 2023

That update is pretty vague. This is just going around in circles now.

The studios need to relent on the AI issue otherwise this will never end. AI looks like shit and can't pass off at this point as humans.

And I saw actors are getting annoyed by "updates" from the trades. Deadline is owned by an AMPTP company and is according to them heavily biased.

Jeff Sneider posted an "update" yesterday on X from his "sources" that sounded positive. But, Jeri Ryan called him out as complete bullshit reporting.

Re: Screen Actors Strike 2023

Isn't it strange that we now live in an era where college athletes are getting rich off of NIL (names, images, and likenesses) as part of the "right of publicity" issue with the NCAA, but major movie studios are attempting to strip actors of this same thing?

Re: Screen Actors Strike 2023

The studios really want to fuck over the actors. Dead or Alive. This is just an expansion from my post above.
