Screen Actors Strike 2023

I thought it would be better for us to discuss an impending Actors' strike in its own thread.

They voted tonight to authorize a strike if no deal has been reached by the end of the month. This strike will stop almost all entertainment program production in its tracks.

....yeah, that's probably not going to end well.

This is probably a stretch, but I'm also guessing the general public doesn't care about the outcome since paying their bills/ putting food on the table probably takes priority over when then next MCU film hits theaters.

There's also additional content /entertainment alternatives widely available.

You do realize the entertainment industry whether it’s television or movies provides jobs and billions of dollars into the local economy wherever there’s production. It’s not all about “Hollywood” people. Catering, Construction, on set doctors, Clothes, and various small businesses get valuable money when there are shoots going on. And of course post production and special effects artists. And who says this is about MCU? So many mid to small movies provide jobs.

Some guy who runs a small catering business in say Canada and whose client is a major studio TV show will lose a lot money if there is no production.

If there is a SAG strike and if the WGA strike continues on it’s going to hurt a lot of businesses and people who are lower on the totem pole in production. But I also want them to stick it to the studios and their shareholders for being the cheap bastards that they are.

Yeah, there's this concept called Outsourcing, you might have heard of it. My industry(tech) has been dealing with it for years and my guess thats going to be a go-to for the Studios/ Shareholders ( if they're not already doing it now)

Also, aren't these individuals protesting already earning a livable wage?

Streamers can certainly acquire other means of media, but in general the studios don't make money since those are not blockbuster type content.

No. Maybe the 1-2% of Hollywood elite actors.

Doesn’t sound like SAG is in total agreement about the “progress” that was allegedly reported.

This was the member update from last week that was posted on YouTube. It looks like an SNL parody. 3 more days left.

A good write up on what TV, movies and other events like Comic Con that would be affected by a SAG strike

Weighing the possibility of an actors' strike, Anthony Mackie isn’t sure what to expect, but one thing is clear: “It’s a sh*t show if we go on strike.” The only way forward, he adds, is for the studios to come to the bargaining table with a fair deal. “They’re going to have to. Unless they get a bunch of f*cking YouTubers to make Avengers 5!”

The studios are running scared. They asked for Federal Mediation.

No more extensions. Unless a miracle happens, things will blow up on Wednesday.

Less than 2 hours left. A deal ain't happening.

CBS Mornings has been promoting Mission Impossible all week interviewing the stars. I guess tomorrow and Friday's interviews with whoever they planned to talk to will be cancelled. I assume Cruise was probably suppose to show up. They already talked to Atwell, Kirby, McQuarrie and Ferguson.

Perhaps they are interviewing the producer Thomas Cruise Mapother IV.

I'd have a lot more respect for Anthony Mackie (and any other Hollywood actors) if they put others first -- like the businesses and folks actually hurt by the strike as tier 2 and 3 suppliers -- instead of making us think Avengers 5 will be a "shit show". I have a feeling it was going to be that all on its own.

Billionaire CEOs don't get affected. They happily lay off employees in order to keep their bonuses. I've been thru 10 years of consecutive layoffs and every year there is still money for bonuses. #thingsthatmakeyougohmmm

re: Screen Actors Strike 2023

It's the players (actors) that bring in the money and not the owners (ceos/investors). This is the sports industry all over again where owners think people come to see them and want to roll in money to then realize that people pay to see the players. The owners of sports teams finally relented and paid the players, even the guys riding the bench, much more than they used to. Money grubbing in our country by people who are strictly bullshitters is sad.

Aren't all the daytime hosts part of SAG-AFTRA as well (the AFTRA part?

Journalists are part of SAG AFTRA, but they are under different guidelines.

So to answer my own question, CBS Mornings pretaped an interview with Pom Klementieff yesterday that aired today.

No, it’s just performing artists under SAG AFTRA.

But that's going to grind pretty much all entertainment productions to a halt right? Even reality shows won't be able to film because hosts are members of these two guilds, is that correct?

A lot of British and Canadian productions are covered under SAG AFTRA. There are a bunch that are in limbo because of this.
