Yeah, but you have to actually complete filming a certain amount of episodes within a given timeframe to get paid (varies by show/contract)

I doubt they would even go on strike unless the contract is really bad. Probably comes down to things like salary, hours, and safety.

If this list is inclusive, it doesn't look like the crews have gone in strike since 1936/1942.
I assume they're going to ask for a lot more money and salary protections. Having gone thru work stoppage from COVID and the two strikes, this hit the below the line people pretty hard. They're going to see the pressure of finishing features and network series in the coming months (especially if they take their customary winter hiatus).

Here is Disney trying to get in on the AI extras game. Or maybe an extra walked off without signing a form. As far as I know, this is not a joke.

Disney's "Prom Pact". As far as I know, it wasn't meant to be horror.

This was all the rage on Twitter (I know, I know, but it will always be twitter) like a month or so ago. Someone in the industry said that this was done because there was a mistake in filming or something and they didn't want that empty seat, and that there's no way it's cheap enough (yet) for it to be cost affordable to replace one extra like this to somehow save money.

A better example would be that horrid job Max did on Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies when one of the actors couldn't come back.

Yeah. The amount it costs to make lifelike CGI characters is still far more than what it costs to pay an extra to sit around for a day, even if you're paying them well.

You would think they could have just digitally placed one of the other actors in the scene into the empty seat (or at least their heads w/ a CGI body). It might have looked like twins cheering but twins exist, freaky humanoid pod people don’t.

Re: Screen Actors Strike 2023

This happened 7 years ago before AI became a big issue, but CBS created a CGI "Jack Lord" on the newer Hawaii Five-O that ran from 2010-2020. Lord was on the original show and died in 1998. They claimed they got permission from Jack Lord's estate and it was to honor him.

It's creepy looking. With the new contract, I don't think you'll ever see someone try this again.

Re: Screen Actors Strike 2023

Justine Bateman is not happy with the deal's AI provisons:

Justine Bateman Slams SAG-AFTRA Tentative Deal's AI Provisions (msn.com)

I found this part somewhat alarming:

Following her discussion on MSNBC, Bateman took to X (formerly Twitter) early Saturday to say that she plans to read the actual contract and not the summary so she can explain "the violating [AI] permissions the AMPTP will have over you. I'm very disappointed that the SAG leadership and committee did not take my guidance on the [AI] issues."

She added in her thread, "I've said from the beginning that the use of generative [AI] will collapse the structure of this business. I want the actors and crew to have enough self-respect to turn over a table and flip the CEOs off as it happens. They're going to leave you with nothing left to lose."

Later in the day, Bateman shared another thread on X to make actors "aware of some of the language in the [AI] portion of the tentative SAG agreement." After listing several points, she noted what she called "the most serious issue of them," which is the" inclusion in the agreement of ‘Synthetic Performers,' or ‘AI Objects,' resembling humans. This gives the studios/streamers a green-light to use human-looking AI Objects instead of hiring a human actor."

"It's one thing to use GAI to make a King Kong or a flying serpent (though this displaces many VFX/CGI artists), it is another thing to have an AI Object play a human character instead of a real actor," she added. "To me, this inclusion is an anathema to a union contract at all."

I often wonder how long it will be before Hollywood starts making virtual movie stars. We're already close to crossing the uncanny valley, and once we're over it we'll actually be able to create artificial stars that never ask for raises, whip their dicks out in public, or go on racist rants on twitter.

Most people will bristle at the notion, but I think we're really on a generation away from the concept being accepted. Kids and teenagers are already spending a lot of time in immersive virtual worlds with video games and MMORPGs. They and their children will be open to accepting AI movie stars and pop singers.

I am sorry but the studios need to hire real life giant gorillas and radioactive lizards.

Fran Drescher put out an Instagram statement to address some of the concerns that some actors may have.

Full details of the new deal. It’s a super long read. Only for those who actually care of the details and have the time.

And Fran shot down Justine Bateman’s pessimism on Instagram. She said Justine was not involved with the finalized portion of the deal involving AI, so she had no clue of the new details that she was not privy to. Remember she was only a consultant and not part of the negotiations.

The new SAG AFTRA contract with officially ratified. 78% voted to approve it. 38% of the actors participated in the voting. It's the highest turnout in the last 2 votes.

Thank God. It's now officially over at least until 2026.

Re: Screen Actors Strike 2023

Looking at a few threads on X, a lot of actors are extremely upset the turnout was only 38% considering how long and how devastating this strike was.

I think a lot of A-Listers who are well off probably didn't care to vote.

Here is a good perspective

SAG-AFTRA - Less acting, more walking!

(I thought that was Patton Oswald when I saw the picture.)

Tangent … that’s pretty close to how our teachers’ union contract vote went a few weeks ago. Was just enough members present to vote.
