And? Have you looked at tv ratings recently? It was the highest rated non-sporting event of the year.
Hate the Oscars all you want for being boring, pretentious or whatever, but enough people still care enough to watch. The argument that they should be kept off tv is one of the dumbest things I've ever read on this forum.

They can still have the event and the winners can still be "Academy Award winners" afterward. Who cares if you couldn't watch it on TV? I'm sure the average person doesn't remember who won the previous year anyway.
Though as I've said they might actually pull a better number this year, just because they nominated movies for BP that people actually saw.

The Oscars are still a big deal. The 16 million ratings are really good. Not everything is going to do NFL NUMBERS.
The only reason so many people watched it for decades is there were only 3 channels for a long time and now there are infinite entertainment options.
Oscars aren’t going anywhere. And whomever is in charge that allows a broadcast that is mostly movie clips, montages and people standing there to cost $40 million should be fired.

I realize there's a segment of people who don't like Award shows and think they're a waste of time. But, what good is it to complain about it when you have the power to watch something else than dwell that it still exists?

ABC flexed their muscles last year to get the Oscars to make changes to the show after the ratings in 2021 were terrible. Apparently they have a clause in their contract that allows them to get out of the deal (which goes until 2028) and cancel the show if they want to.
I don't deny for a second that the rights fees (which were agreed to in a different tv landscape) are exorbitant and that the show as it exists now may not be fiscally responsible for the network. But there's no reason to think that the Academy wouldn't promptly take their 16 million viewers somewhere else to keep the show on the air, even if it meant reducing rights fees and scaling back the cost of the show.

I hope NBC or another network gets it in the future since it seems like ABC has a lifetime contract with the Oscars.
I assume but not sure how many people they lost that are conservative and hate Hollywood and everything it stands for but maybe watched the show in the past.

It's apathy. Many people don't care to tune in to an awards show for movies they haven't seen, or even heard of. The Slap and the La La Land gaffe being the stuff that the majority of people are talking about the next day (week, month, year, etc) speaks volumes.

What happened to the BAFA Awards?
Usually it would air on BBC American every year but they have a Rocky marathon on Feb 19.

After weeks of speculation, Oscarcast director Glenn Weiss said today that Lady Gaga will not perform her Best Song nominee “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick at Sunday’s 95th annual Academy Awards.
The singer has told producers she is planning on coming to the ceremony as a nominee, but she won’t have time to prepare a musical number because she’s shooting the Warner Bros’ DC sequel Joker: Folie à Deux with Joaquin Phoenix.

The other four tunes up for the Best Original Song Oscar — “Applause” (from Tell It like a Woman), “Lift Me Up” (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), “Naatu Naatu” (RRR) and “This Is a Life” (Everything Everywhere All at Once) — will be performed during the show.

That’s too bad. I guess in the scheme of things, it doesn’t really matter if Lady Gaga performs or not but it’s my choice for best song so I was hoping to hear her perform it.

It’s a great song, but if she doesn’t feel comfortable performing it live this weekend while she’s working on Joker, then it’s probably for the best. You need rehearsal time and don’t want a sloppily put together production.

It sucks as it’s an amazing song and she looks so good in the video. Would have loved hearing that song performed live by GaGa.
