I dont think I could be any more indifferent about a movie, which probably puts it as my favorite DC film.

No way will this make back its money. I predict a second week drop to about 10 million, which is about a 60%(?) drop. If only the film had not cost as much as it did. That's one of the biggest glaring blunders. That, and there's no big star headlining it. I like the cast but without Will Smith or someone equivalent, it was destined to bomb.

Being on HBO Max for 31 days for "free" also kills any potential repeat business. Yeah you may have seen it in the theater week 1, but if you subscribe to HBO Max, the likelihood of you making another trip to the theater for a 2nd viewing even if you loved is very small. Especially when it's literally a few button clicks away.

The same fate is going to happen to Dune in 2 months.

One of the perks of the HBO Max setup is it gets mixed in the financials. Netflix spends close to the same on some of their flicks with no theatrical release.

But yeah either way, still ultimately a money loser and I am also a bit bummed by that. Then again,, I liked Jungle Cruise too and that's pretty much a dud at its budget as well.

this release model is fucking stupid. Disney+'s is as well, but not this bad.

in the middle of a pandemic, I'm going either going to:

pay extra to sit in an enclosed space with a bunch of strangers
OR
pay absolutely nothing, and sit in the comfort of my own home and watch it the very same night it hits theaters...

and then shit all over the movie (which I will admit was just OK IMO) for not being a box office powerhouse????

wtf.

What Will Smith movie in the last decade made money other than Suicide Squad? Why do you guys keep acting like the pandemic is THE reason this year’s box office is so anemic.

Aladdin? Bad Boys For Life? Spies in Disguise? MiB3? All of those were highly profitable movies.

Bad Boys for Life was a huge hit in early 2020.

Aladdin would have done well regardless, but it doesn't change the fact it grossed over a billion bucks.

It's only one of the variables. Mendelson's article was spot on and that was 10 reasons why.

Overall I thought it was fun. I agree that it dragged a little bit in the middle. It definitely had a Guardians of the Galaxy mixed with Doom Patrol type vibe for me.

I know people really like Harley Quinn, but after watching the animated series, I wish she was more like that version. Maybe it's just the accent that I don't like.

Re: The Suicide Squad (2021, W/D: James Gunn) -- S: Robbie, Elba, Cena, Davis -- The Spoiler Reviews Thre

I hate to pee in the celebratory punchbowl since everyone here seems to be jizzing over this movie but I saw it yesterday and thought it was weak sauce.

It tried to be humorous and failed at almost every turn. I chuckled only a couple of times and this movie was trying to make you laugh constantly. The gore didn't bother me but at times just seemed to be excessive to be excessive. The silliness just didn't ring true either. It just felt like it kept trying to scream, "HEY! LOOK HOW FUN, SILLY & GRUESOME THIS MOVIE IS!!!" and but forgot to add the actual funny and heart.

I thought the acting was good and most of the character were interesting but the story just seems so disjointed. I couldn't put my finger on it for an exact reason but I never felt sucked into the story, didn't care about any of the characters, and it just felt emotionally hollow for the entirety of the movie. I hate to compare it to the first Guardians Of The Galaxy (Vol. 1) but it is a fair comparison. Directed and written by the same guy. Ensemble piece with several eclectic characters weaving in and out. Lots of humorous situations and one-liners being extended. And yet it failed to entertain on even the lowest level of GOTG.

It made me sad because I went in really excited for this movie after suffering the fiasco of Black Widow recently. I am glad other people liked it but it boggles my mind how so many people are just loving and praising this movie. Again, it wasn't a bad film. Just extremely mediocre. But that especially stings when they have all that talent and money behind it.

My rating: **1/2

ps (other quick thoughts): Sad to see Captain Boomerang go. Wish Harley would go. Would watch a whole movie on Savant with Michael Rooker. Peacemaker character was good but not as funny as I had hoped. So is King Shark invincible? Good score but even better soundtrack choices from Gunn...the dude knows how to match and pick great music.

Re: The Suicide Squad (2021, W/D: James Gunn) -- S: Robbie, Elba, Cena, Davis -- The Spoiler Reviews Thre

Just saw it last night and loved it. Here's my take, which I haven't seen elsewhere (although I haven't looked at a ton of reviews):
The movie is a satire of 1980s "jungle action" movies that contrasts the tropes in those with US foreign intervention at the time. The US sends in a covert team, not of heroes, but of people who have their various, mostly selfish, reasons for going. Only two of them have any real idealism, and only one of those wants to make the world a better place. This "world-saving" mission is actually to cover up their own dealings and destabilizes the country. The buff, rah-rah American is not a glorious patriotic hero, but a willing government tool. The guy who becomes disillusioned and tries to do the right thing is killed by the red, white, and blue.

The soldiers going into kick ass and take names in South America are just expendable thugs, shooting first, unable to distinguish friend or foe, and there to mop up US screw-ups. They take out the government, hurt more innocent people than before they came, and just hope for the best.

Re: The Suicide Squad (2021, W/D: James Gunn) -- S: Robbie, Elba, Cena, Davis -- The Spoiler Reviews Thre

I just watched this on HBO Max this afternoon, and I thought it was good.

Not as good as the Guardians movies, but good.

My problem is that while I liked it, and loved parts of it, it was a little too far over the top. A little too much gore, a little too goofy, and that knocks it down a half a notch. I like that it's goofy and violent, but it goes just a little too far at times.

But it's definitely significantly better than the first Suicide Squad movie, and it's entertaining as hell, overall. It's not great, but it's fun.

3 3/4

Saw that too. Part of me kind of wishes that Deathstroke would have been on the team.

I do like Elba more than Manganiello, though (who I assume they would have used... but just an assumption).

Yeah Elba/Bloodsport was an awesome straight guy in this who was still fun. Not Sure Joe/Deathstroke could have been as layered.

Wouldn't mind seeing a Deathstroke movie with him going up against Bloodsport... And get the one of the John Wick guys to direct.

Best line:
Bloodsport: “why are you wearing tighty whiteys?”
Peacemaker: ”Now, that’s just racist.”

he was the glue. Without him in this role, I think movie would have fallen apart.
