So I'm guessing they assumed Chadwick was going to win and then peeked at the envelope early? Ouch!

Re: The 2021 Oscars Discussion Thread

I quite liked that ceremony: No endless clips for every actor, actually show the nominees for the non acting awards, let the winners speak as long as they like, and they only went 15 minutes over.

But who the fuck thought it was a good idea to put best picture anywhere but last? The biggest award comes at the end. Ending with best actor when 40% of the nominees aren't even there?!

Was Hopkins not available for a satellite speech? At least that would have concluded the show more satisfying.

Yeah, I think they were expecting Chadwick to win. And his wife accepting the award with a very emotional speech to bring the house down. I'm guessing Hopkins is in England and no way is he still up 4:00 AM to accept.

And McDormand continues to look......odd. Her and Joel are true Bohemians.

No one is owed an Oscar, even posthumously. Missed the entire show, but I'm glad to see some surprises. Now I'll try to check out some of the winning films!

Re: The 2021 Oscars Discussion Thread

So ends the strangest Oscar ceremony I've ever seen. Moving best picture ahead of the acting awards was truly bizarre, and while Anthony Hopkins winning ended up being an anticlimactic moment, it seemed very appropriate given the rest of the ceremony. I began getting the feeling that Boseman may not end up winning, but I would have put money on Riz Ahmed. I bet the vote was very split.

Considering what a lean show it was, it made the Oscar song trivia game even more weird and out of place, but Glenn Close sort of saved it. At least it made me laugh!

Oscar voter's are historically not a sentimental bunch. They didn't even give James Dean a posthumous win. Peter Finch in Network and Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight are the only Posthumous acting winners in the 90+ years of Oscar. The other deceased winners have been in technical categories who's name's aren't on the voting ballot.

There's a morbid part of me that thinks they ought to throw in a Best Posthumous Performance Oscar.

30 years between Oscar wins for Anthony Hopkins has to be some kind of record.

I bet the ratings on the West Coast are going to be a diaster when it starts at 5pm during DST when the sun is still out and nobody is going to sit in and watch them.

At least they gave the best director awards in the middle of the show but still they bore you with the small awards. We know they are important but it does not make fun TV.

They could have tried that Oscar song game earlier in the show.

Regina King had to do everything in the beginning which slowed things down and no musical performances was not a good idea.

They rushed the In Memoriam and you had 1 second to read the names.

Another year and no best picture win for Netflix.

I wonder why they could not get Hopkins there or relax the Zoom policy?

Maybe he has his own social media page and you will find out how he is feeling after winning.

Now I know Aaron Sorkin has hooked up with Paulina Porizkova.

I didn't watch last night (hardly ever do, just see clips later on). But they removed all the clips, and all the musical performances, and it was still over 3 hours long? Yikes.

Apparently, since there was no orchestra, there was no one to "play off" the winners at the 45-second mark.

And in a bizarre year where no actor dies...they send a hit squad out to create the nominees. Sounds like a horror movie. lol

Word is they did it because they were betting on Chadwick winning and a big emotional speech by his wife at the end. A truly cynical move.

This was very awkward, like it was put together by somebody who has never seen the Oscars but has been told what they are like.

What a surreal experience...

I thought there was something off about the whole thing, and tommyp007 nailed it. It felt like a wedding reception. People dressed up and sitting around tables. People giving speeches. Your octogenarian uncle rambling as he struggles to read from notes. No clips. No orchestra.

Are the years catching up with Harrison Ford, or he was just high as a fucking kite?

They had a DJ, he could have done it.

Yeah this, just awkward and weird, nothing clicked at all. I only sat through it all because my wife wanted to watch, but jeezus that was bad, with a shit ending to top it all off. Every decision made was bad, including lack of clips, the fast forward "In Memoriam", the poor quality low frame rate video, and that stupid awkward stage that some people had problems with (and no escorts or anyone in sight to assist, even after it was apparent that some folks were having troubles).
