Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024, D: Wes Ball)

The apes will live on. Deadline has confirmed that 20th Century Fox under its new parent Disney has tapped Maze Runner filmmaker Wes Ball to develop a new Planet of the Apes movie. It’s very early in the works, and it’s not certain if this will pick up where Matt Reeves’ War for the Planet of the Apes left off or if it’s a complete remake.

Starting in 1968, the movies spawned 5 titles based on Pierre Boule’s French novel along with a ’70s series and action figures before there were Star Wars toys. Tim Burton rebooted with one pic starring Mark Wahlberg in 2001. It earned $362.1M worldwide, but didn’t spawn a new series. But then in 2011, Rise of the Planet of the Apes gave a more modern spin on the tale with Andy Serkis in the role of Caesar the ape, who morphs from lab study to king of the monkeys. Through three movies including Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War, the trio grossed $1.68 billion around the globe.

The first movie had a teaser about a spacecraft "lost in space". I wonder if they'll reimagine the original using this plot point or if they'll come up with something else.

I enjoyed the new trilogy quite a bit so I hope they continue that “cycle”. If they decide not to continue on, a side-quel would work as well, I suppose.

I may be in the minority on this but I always wanted a sequel that picked up where Tim Burton’s left off. I really liked that ending. It’s too bad the rest of the movie sucked for the most part.

I don't want anymore from the recent trilogy. I'd like to see a reboot (potential trilogy) that focuses on George Taylor again. And I'd like to go back to the original "look" of the apes from the 60s/70s (or even Tim Burton's take). I can do without the "realistic" apes this time around.

I'd like a combination. Continue from the modern trilogy, but have the apes change their look due to the virus or whatever so they're more upright and human looking. I don't really see the need to reboot yet again, there's still room for stories to be told.

Now that we have a good modern remake, an over the top sequel to Marky Mark and the Monkey Bunch could be interesting. Let someone like Lord and Miller do it, and keep them from screwing up Star Wars anymore.

Was that Lord and Miller? I’m not sure you can smack the blame on them when you have an indecisive temperamental studio head who jettisons everything midstream and brings in a bland yes-boy to redo it. Their track record is better than hers.

Anyway, we digress ... definitely up for more Apes! I love that this is series that is willing to take risks and turn the franchise in new directions. I know the Burton version is pretty universally panned, but my only knock against it was that it really didn’t bring anything new to the table.

Really liked the recent trilogy. I could do without any new Apes movies for a while personally, but franchises are what sell now days.

I'm with the camp that this needs to "continue" where the most recent trilogy left off, which would essentially make it both a sequel and remake. Since the previous movies were done mostly from the POV of the apes, I think they should keep it that way. The first time we see Taylor could be when he's captured, and then the mystery of piecing together why he's unique can be the story. Basically, start from the end of the original movie and move backward.

re: Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024, D: Wes Ball)

We have learned that Daniel Dorrance has joined the crew for Wes Ball’s ‘Planet of the Apes’ reboot for 20th Century Studios as the film’s production designer.

Wes Ball will write and direct the new ‘Planet of the Apes’ reboot with David Starke and Joe Hartwick Jr set to produce the film.

Daniel Dorrance has worked alongside Wes Ball as the production designer on some of his films including ‘Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials’ and ‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure’, he was also a part of the production design team for Wes Ball’s ‘Mouse Guard’ film that was cancelled following Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox.

Sources say that the film will be a reboot so it is unlikely that it will be connected to the previous ‘Planet of the Apes’ trilogy that was done under 20th Century Fox. My prediction is that it will reboot the original 1968 film. The film is targeting to begin filming later this year, which likely will mean a 2022 release date.

re: Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024, D: Wes Ball)

Since the previous trilogy would very easily lead into something similar to where the world was in the 1968 film, seems like it would be silly to jettison that from the future timeline.

Right.
I would rather see them continue with the recent trilogy and have Taylor show up.

They could say it's a reboot and do their own thing for a couple films, and if they need a boost then do some timey-wimey shenanigans and tie into the recent trilogy.

The whole concept is a mess anyways, may as well have fun with it.

There's actually been some test footage already shot that shows how this new version is going to go in an "different" direction that may upset some fans. Someone leaked it online, but it might not be there for long:

Spoiler:
They're making it a musical!

Which Caesar? That's the question.

But the simplest reading is that he will continue on from the recent trilogy.

I feel like no news story is ever completely accurate. Anytime I hear a report on something I'm very knowledgeable about, I'll catch a little error here and there. I doubt that only happens on stories I know.

Anyways - it's great they're actually going to follow-up on that spaceship mentioned in the first movie.

What’s new with Planet of the Apes?

We are expecting a draft very shortly, and it’s Wes Ball attached to direct. We hope to go by the late summer, early fall.

re: Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024, D: Wes Ball)

The next Planet of the Apes movie is coming in focus, with 20th Century Studios confirming the cast for the newly titled Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The film from director Wes Ball stars Owen Teague, and newly announced castmembers Freya Allen and Peter Macon. It is slated for a 2024 release.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes picks up many years after War for the Planet of the Apes, the 2017 feature that concluded the previous trilogy that used motion capture technology to look at the origin of Caesar, a chimp that leads the simians to a revolution. Andy Serkis starred Caesar, with Matt Reeves directing the final two installments to critical acclaim.

Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, and Patrick Aison will pin the script. Joe Hartwick Jr. Jaffa, Silver and Jason Reed are producing, with Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping executive producing.

“Planet of the Apes is one of the most iconic and storied science fiction franchises in film history, as well as being an indelible part of our studio’s legacy,” Steve Asbell, president 20th Century Studios said in a statement. “With Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes we are privileged to continue the series’ tradition of imaginative, thought-provoking cinema, and can’t wait to share Wes’ extraordinary vision for this new chapter with audiences in 2024.”

Planet of the Apes, based on the novel by Pierre Boulle, launched as a film in the 1968 film starring Charlton Heston spawned four sequels and two TV series, with the films grossing. Tim Burton directed a 2001 reboot, and Fox relaunched the franchise in 2011 with Rise of the Planet of the Apes. To date, the films have grossed $1.7 billion globally.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes goes into production next month

And I'm there.
Great idea for the title, wonder that none of the books or comics ever snagged that one?

Is it Planet of the Kingdom of the Apes or Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes?

Personally, I like PotKotA.
