Did, like, no parent or anybody talk to you about that? I'm just so surprised you didn't at least hear about them all those years. We talked about that all the time when I was a little kid.

Seeing Star Wars in the theater was an overwhelming experience, and the bodies sort of blend in with the rest of the debris.
I wouldn't have wondered why Luke looked away from the smoldering remains of his home. I just accepted that Luke knew his Aunt and Uncle were killed.

I don’t think I grasped exactly what had happened when I was younger either. Picked up on it upon later viewings.
All the Star Wars movies have some darkish things in them, but really nothing beyond burnt to a crisp Anakin in Revenge of the Sith is too gruesome. Yeah there’s a lot of limbs lost, a guy gets cut in half, a couple decapitations, and a couple characters get impaled. None of those are terribly gruesome though. The acts are violent but we don’t see much of anything.

Just a thought, but they could have also been edited out of TV broadcasts.
Count me as another that doesn't recall the skeletons being that 'in your face.' Like Josh said, they just kinda blended in with the other debris.

This was back in the times before home video (the dark times), so there wasn't any option to pause or rewind, and movies weren't available to view like they are now.
I don't know when my third viewing of Star Wars was (maybe cable, or another tv broadcast?) but I did get the widescreen VHS boxed set in 1995, and I was able to pause and rewind as much as I wanted to, though the image was fuzzy and rather small with those black bars.

I actually have the trilogy that my mom taped off of USA for me back in the day (never actually owned the official releases on VHS). Could check and see how it aired on that.

pretty sure for a lot of us it was likely multi-factorial... cropping, resolution, bewilderment, and just down right naivety.

I saw this for the first time today and thought it was pretty awesome. I'd like to think this progression based on Yoda's dialogue was intentional, because it does work. Anyone seen this?

I saw it come up a few times on FB. I don’t really associate Fear with young Anakin though. He was hesitant to leave mom, but he was more cocky than a fearful kid.

Good news to hear about Waititi.
Regarding that image above, I don’t like to think of Darth Vader as suffering. He’s an evil bad guy who likes to destroy things and hurt people. To feel too deeply about the suffering he must feel because of a bad childhood is to give him too much humanity. Like trying to ask me to understand how much the Oklahoma City bomber must have been suffering.

Within simply the spirituality of Star Wars, Vader suffers because he is incapable of overcoming his negative traits or reflecting on himself or his actions. It's like a cautionary Buddhist story to illustrate the Four Noble Truths (which seem to be a major influence on Lucas' development of Jedi philosophy).

Your mileage may definitely vary on this. Personally, I think that every person must be humanized, no matter what wrong they do.

Palpatine in essence is not a character, but a plot device. We are given no background on him or look into his private life or motives, and his function is simply to move the story along. He is defined solely in relation to the other characters, as either an external representation of internal conflict or problem. He's the personification of the opposing ideology. That said, he does have an appreciation for the arts (the opera scene, his chancellor's office) and displays fear and pain in both ROTJ and TROS.

Not even just all that, but Vader is physically suffering after being defeated on Mustafar and being put into the suit. Of course we aren’t supposed to think about that and he’s just supposed to be a badass in black, but there’s some interesting lore about the suit itself.

As a kid before the Prequels I always thought the Darkside had a possession like hold on Vader and the Emperor controlled him through that. Once the Emperor was about to kill Luke he broke from it.

That was a very powerful statement by Vader, as it jives with the exact thing you are saying. Once Anakin turned to the darkside in Revenge of the Sith because he was fooled by Palpatine (along with the whole scene being utterly ridiculous), the whole power of the darkside lost alot of weight to me.

The one thing I love about the OT is that every time I watch I find something new that just bothers me. I was just watching ESB and the scene when Vader is talking to the bounty hunters, how the hell would they have gotten there? The fleet was in middle of nowhere in an asteroid field.

Re: The General Star Wars Discussion Thread
So Vader had to wait until they all showed to brief them? Were there any bounty hunters that showed up after that? That would be embarassing.
Did they really have to meet on the bridge of the Star Destroyer? That seems like a security risk. You'd think a ship that big would have some empty meeting rooms or something.

Vader probably did it on the bridge to embarrass the officers who were having trouble catching one little freighter.
