That and I’m sorry, but it’s a hard sell for me that this team of gods essentially were around during Thanos and the snap and basically were like: we’ll sit this one out.

We’re to believe that there’s some new threat that’s somehow worse than that in one film versus the major villain Thanos was built up as in multiple films? Just doesn’t register with me.

I'm not familiar with the comic. Are they omniscient as well as immortal? Because if not, they may not have had any reason to be aware of Thanos' plan (or even Thanos' existence) before the Snap.

In the comics (spoilers just in case):

Spoiler:
they are basically an offshoot of humanity because of meddling by the Celestials (one of two races created) similar to how the Inhumans were made by the Kree. They live longer and through an incident they got cosmic powers but they aren't omniscient. They can Voltron into a higher being, though.

A branch of Eternals are who went to the moons of Titan and are where comics Thanos is descended from, so there's a connection there, I wonder if they bring it up.

But really they are Kirby's version of his unfinished New Gods but for Marvel.

Apparently, this film will be the "secret history" of the MCU, so I would at least expect to see
Spoiler:
the Celestials in it. The Celestials have already been shown in Guardians of the Galaxy in the flashback to the history of the Infinity Stones, and Knowhere is the head of a dead Celestial.

And, as the Celestials are known to have interfered with human evolution, this might also be how the mutants/X-Men are introduced into the MCU.

vaguely familiar with them, but wasn't their M.O. all about non-interference no matter what?

I don't think so, considering some of them have been Avengers before.

But I believe they've always like protected from the shadows especially from the deviants. Maybe you're thinking of the Inhumans, who were always secluded?

I don't know them at all but they literally said that in the trailer. It looks like something happened that meant they now had to interfere (and it could have been the Snap/Blip).

If only there were a movie coming out that would explain everything!

If only the movie coming out actually looked interesting. I’ve liked most of the MCU thus far but I just don’t care about this in the slightest.

Ins't Quill's father (Ego) a celestial at least in the comics? Can't quite recall if they outright called him that in the movie.

In the movies he says he's a Celestial (and by extension Peter is too because he needed two of them to do whatever terraforming thing they were doing)

1:47 mark:

It's not clear if he's just referring to Celestials as like beings with a certain level of power or the giants with the weird helmets, because in his origin he says he basically became self conscious on his own and I think he says later he's the only one left.

And I'm really looking forward to the introduction of a whole new set of characters for this universe. As much as I love Endgame (and I think it's one of the greatest cinematic achievements in history), I didn't need to see the same characters again. I'm super excited about some of the other characters moving to the front as the "main" Marvel characters we've had so far move back.

Between this and Shang-Chi so far Phase Four isn’t doing a lot for me. My opinion is these two movies should have released in separate years sandwiched between more known Marvel characters/franchises.
They made GOTG into a surprise hit and this is basically similar to this in that they are to the general non comic book reading public, a virtually unknown Marvel super team. So, I'll hold out any judgement on this one until I see the movie. Shang-Chi seems like it would have been a better property to fit into the Netflix shows with Daredevil and the Defenders. It doesn't seem like it will be as interesting as a major motion picture. I never really thought Black Widow could hold her own in a movie either; especially with her already being introduced and appearing in other movies. This should have been a Disney+ limited series and likely won't do as good in the theaters.

I'm not familiar with the characters, and they say they don't interfere, but didn't they also say they guided humanity along? Aren't those ideas kind of diametrically opposed?

Yep! Same issue that comes up with the Prime Directive. "We don't interfere, except we totally do all the time".

I think they probably were like, "Here's the wheel. Here's how you build a pyramid. Etc." And then peaced out once they realized they were doing all the work for us/got bored.

If Thanos ends up being related to them, I can see them deciding, "OK, well these forces are going to interact with Earth whether or not we do anything, so we should probably at least stop the cosmic threats."

I don't generally like ancient aliens stuff, but the beginning of the trailer reminded me of the opening of Final Crisis, where Metron meets Anthro. Both Jack Kirby!

I think the initial trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy looked better and had more of a Marvel feel. It looked different and people didn’t know the characters, but it at least had fun vibes and felt somewhat in line with other Marvel films. This just feels generic and not like a Marvel film at all really other than the forced end conversation about the Avengers.

Maybe I'm a little biased, but I trust Kevin Feige and Marvel and he hasn't let us down on big tentpole Marvel movies (well maybe except Thor 2), which this looks like it's aiming to be. Until I actually see it this November, I won't write it off with some knee jerk reaction because it's an unfamiliar Marvel IP.

Re: Marvel's Eternals (2021, D: Zao)

I mean again I’ve liked almost everything produced by the MCU. I just haven’t been excited about this since it was announced as it just doesn’t sound that interesting, and the trailer did nothing to change my mind.

I think especially in a case where the franchise/characters are unknown it’s important to grab the attention of your audience with the first trailer. To me this just didn’t do that.

Couple that with me not thinking Shang-Chi looks all that impressive either and it kind of is a double whammy.

Re: Marvel's Eternals (2021, D: Zao)

I think part of the problem at least at this point with both this and Shang Chi is that it's not like the costumes or character designs really stand out, besides the diversity of the cast. Like I saw the leak of the Marvel Legends figures for the Eternals a few months ago and those are going to be stuck on shelves for a while. Contrast this to a big green wrestler, a racoon and a talking tree. It's similar to what made the new Suicide Squad trailer look more interesting to me too.

But it's still really early.

Yeah, i was already in but the teaser locked it for me. That said, based on some recent convos with Hardcore Marvel Fans I work with and seeing stuff online, it seems End Game was a HUGE Money Shot for them and nothing else post EG/Last MCU Phase can make them happy. It's all comments like, "That doesn't look good", "I'm gonna skip that", etc....

Also for the record I think Shang-Chi looks great, but I think I was the only person who liked the Iron Fist series on Netflix

I really like the hand-to-hand combat in the MCU over the cosmic and big power stuff, which is why I'm also super excited about Black Widow. And The Eternals didn't seem to have huge space and power battles either, so that's more my speed.

I liked Netflix's Iron Fist, too! Especially Jessica Henwick as Colleen Wing--I wish Marvel would work her into the movies somehow.

The Shang-Chi trailer looks good to me and has me looking forward to the movie.

It’s not that I think Shang-Chi looks bad. It just looks like a generic martial arts type film and doesn’t seem like a Marvel film.
